Dragons Win Semifinal over Flyers, Head to Regional Championship with Sandies

Jewett Leon High School, March 2, 2018 –

The Shelbyville Dragons Varsity Basketball Team advanced to the Region III Championship, by defeating the LaPoynor Flyers, in overtime, by a 69-61 score. Shelbyville will now face the Grapeland Sandies at Jewett-Leon High School on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 1 p.m.Grapeland beat Tenaha 55-53 yesterday.

Ryan Bailey and Jordan Boykins got Shelbyville out to an early start by hitting 3-point shots in the opening period. Shelbyville built a 12-9 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Isaac Jackson scored 10 of his game-high 30 points in the second period which helped the Flyers take a 28-27 lead into the midway break at halftime.

Jordan Boykins came through once again by hitting two buckets and sinking 6-9 free-throws during the third stanza. The game was tied 37-37 going into the fourth quarter.

Dragons sophomore point guard Jakovian Buckley helped Shelbyville keep pace in the fourth frame by sinking two baskets and sinking 4-8 free-throw attempts. The teams went into an overtime period with the team’s tied at 57-57.

Shelbyville’s defensive press was relentless and the Dragons got nine points during the extra period from Buckley which helped SHS hold the 8-point final point advantage.

The Dragons were led by Buckley with 19 points. Jordan Boykins added 15 points, Cole Ferguson 11, Ryan Baily 11, Kolby Parker 8, Kurtrick Allen 6, Kyle Tindol scored one point.  

Shelbyville’s season record now stands at 31-4. They are coached by David Scmidtt and assistants Charles Tindol, and Chris Moore. They ended the regular season as co-champions of District 22 2A with the Dragons and Tenaha Tigers each having an 11-1 conference mark.
