Tigers Come Up Short in Regional Semifinals, Fall to Grapeland 55-53

Jewett-Leon High School, March 2, 2018 –

The Tenaha Tigers Varsity Basketball Team ended their season with a 55-53 Regional Semifinal loss to the Grapeland Sandies. The Tigers were on a twelve game winning streak prior to the loss. They ended the year with a 16-3 overall record and were co-champions of District 22 2A with the Shelbyville Dragons with each team posting an 11-1 conference mark.

Tenaha led 8-2 by the midway point of the first quarter. They held a 10-6 lead at the end of the first period.

Buckets at the beginning of the second stanza by Sandies Tyrin Wiley and Rick Frauenberger tied the game at 10-10. A steal and a fast break layup by Sandies forward Javion Joseph gave GHS their first lead (15-140 with 6:52 left in the first half. Two 3-pointers by Tiger guard sophomore Hayden Jenkins helped THS take a 26-19 lead into the halftime break.

The Sandies got nine steals in the third period which helped them tie the game at 37-17 going into the final period of play. Grapeland got 8 points from junior guard Tyrin Wiley and a key 3-pointer from sophomore forward Keriaun Davis which helped them outscore Tenaha by two points in the final period.

Dacorian Bryant led the Sandies with 15 points. Teammate Rickfrauenberger added 12 points to the GHS tally, and Tyrin Wiley scored ten.

Tenaha was led by Trai Gardner with 23, Hayden Jenkins 11, Jay Lloyd 9, Cody Foshee 6, Erik Smith had four points.
