Shelbyville Drops Extra Inning Game1 Playoff with Douglass

The Shelbyville Dragons Varsity Baseball team dropped a Game 1 Area Round Playoff to the Douglass Indians, on Friday, by a 7-3 score. The game was tied 2-2 at the end of seven innings and it took five extra innings to decide the outcome.

Douglass came into the contest as the first place representative of District 22 2A, they had a 22-4 season record. Shelbyville came in as the third place representative of District 23 2A, with a 15-4 season record.

The game was scoreless until Douglass took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Logan Lee hit a single up the middle. He was later driven in by teammate Jarred Holland’s single to right field. Holland hit another RBI single in the top of the fifth inning. This scored Chad Watson, who had reached base on an error, giving the Indians a 2-0 advantage.

Dragon Kolby Parker drove in Shelbyville’s first run with a run-batted-in single in the bottom of the fifth inning which cut the Indians lead to 2-1. The Dragons tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game remained tied at 2-2 until Douglass exploded for five runs, six innings later, during a twelfth inning rally which gave them a 7-2 advantage.

Dragons’ shortstop Cole Ferguson led off the bottom of the twelfth inning with a towering solo homerun well over the leftfield wall. This cut Douglass’ lead to 7-3. The Dragons then loaded the base paths on an infield hit and two walks but the DHS defense was able to get the needed outs to end the game.

Shelbyville had six hits and walked three times. The Dragons defense committed five errors. Douglass hit safely 11 times, walked four and committed no errors.

Dragon Kolby Parker pitched eight innings, struck out nine and gave up seven hits.

Indian pitchers teamed up for 13 strikeouts and gave up six hits and four walks.

Game 2 will be at Nacogdoches High School today, Saturday May 12 at 3 p.m. If necessary, Game 3 will follow immediately afterward at the same location.
