Shelbyville Takes Pair of District Basketball Wins at Joaquin

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons and Dragons varsity basketball teams each took District 23 2A wins over Joaquin High School on Friday. In girl’s varsity play Shelbyville won by a 56-43 score. The Dragons boy’s team won by a narrow 60-57 score.

The Lady Rams held a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Dragons outscored Joaquin 16-9 during the second stanza and SHS took a 24-18 advantage into the midway break.

Shelbyville was able to distance themselves from Joaquin during the third frame by outpacing them 18-9 points and they led 42-27 going into the final period. Joaquin was able to outpace Shelbyville 16-14 points during the final frame but it was not enough as the Lady Dragons took the 56-43 conference win.

Shelbyville senior guard Kiana Bennett led all scorers with 34 points. Lady Ram sophomore guard Ke’maria Wilson led her team with 17 points.

The boys varsity game was hard fought and close. Joaquin led 18-14 at the end of the first period. Shelbyville trailed 28-25 at halftime. JHS held a 44-40 lead at the conclusion of the third quarter. Shelbyville was able to outscore JHS 20-13 points in the final period to take the 60-57 win.

Joaquin’s sophomore postman Bennett Anglin led all scorers with 18 points for the day.

On Tuesday, January 25, 2022 Joaquin will travel to Martinsville for conference games with the Pirates. Tipoff for JV will be at 4:30 p.m. with varsity girls and boys action to follow.

Shelbyville will have a bye/ open date for Tuesday.
