Annual Litter Clean-up Campaign Scheduled for Saturday

March 29, 2022 - The Annual Don’t Mess With Texas Trash-off is scheduled for Saturday, April 2, signaling the largest one-day litter clean-up in Texas. Volunteers will be in various locations throughout the nine-county Lufkin District picking up trash along the roadway.

The yearly event utilizes Adopt-A-Highway volunteer groups throughout the county to participate.

“We will see volunteers throughout our district, so we urge motorists to be aware of their presence,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer with the Lufkin District. “They can easily be seen by the orange safety vest they will be wearing. Reduce speed and allow them to help clean the litter from near our roadways.”

The Great Texas Trash-Off campaign began in 1986 as a call to action to refrain from littering. The program, now known as Don’t Mess With Texas, encourages Adopt-A-Highway volunteers and citizens to participate in the litter pickup statewide.

In 1993, Keep Texas Beautiful officially joined with Adopt-A-Highway and today, the Don’t Mess With Texas Trash-Off is the signature state event for the annual Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup.
