"Save Texas History!" Klaus to Speak at DRT Program

January 2, 2024 - Interested in Texas history? Then come hear Kevin Klaus speak at a program hosted jointly by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Ezekiel Cullen Chapter and the San Augustine County Historical Society on Thursday, January 18. The location will be the San Augustine County District Courtroom (100 W. Columbia Street, Downtown San Augustine). The program will start at 6 and the doors will open at 5:30 p.m. There is no admission charge and any one and any age who is interested in the history of East Texas is sure to enjoy the program.

Mr. Klaus is the Team Leader of the Archives and Records Program Area Research Room at the Texas General Land Office in Austin. His love for Texas history began as a child. Even though he grew up in the Hill Country, when he stayed with his grandparents in Lufkin, he loved to listen to their stories about the Republic of Texas and how Texas came to be a state. His ancestors include the Scoggins, Buckner, Risinger, Woods, Blair, Cummins, and Pixley families, many who are buried at Old North Church in Nacogdoches and other East Texas Cemeteries.

Beginning in 1990, he served eight years in the United States Army. In 1998 he was honorably discharged from the Army in New Mexico and returned to Central Texas where he grew up. Kevin has a background in Anthropology, Archeology, and Public History from the University of New Mexico.

Over the last twenty years he has served as one of the lead researchers in the Texas General Land Office Archives and Records Program Area. During his time at the Land Office, he has searched the early Court Claims files, German Collection and Archival Collection to learn more about the history of Texas and discover the amazing collection of personal letters of early soldiers and pioneers who helped settle our great state. The focus of his program in San Augustine will be East Texas.

Make plans to attend this free event, Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 6 p.m. in San Augustine, Texas, at the San Augustine County District Courtroom (2nd floor of the courthouse). The doors will open at 5:30pm, so come early to get a good seat!
