Timpson’s John Herbert Eakin Stadium on Friday, November 1, 2024 –
The visiting Garrison Bulldogs earned a 22-19 point District 11 2A-1 Football win over the Timpson Bears on Friday. The game was close throughout and settled part of a three-way tie for the conference lead. The Bulldogs are now 7-2 overall and 3-1 in District 11. Timpson is now 4-4 and 2-2 in the conference. The matchup between these neighboring high school varsity teams is known as the Battle of the Attoyac and is named for a river which separates the two towns as well as Shelby and Nacogdoches counties.
Antonio Yarbrough broke free for a 63-yard Bulldogs touchdown just seconds into the game and an extra point kick by Jack Richardson gave Garrison a 7-0 point advantage with 11:46 still remaining in the first quarter.
Timpson answered with a 52-yard drive but a 29-yard field goal attempt sailed wide-right with 5:55 still left in the opening period. Garrison drove downfield on the ensuing drive but Timpson’s Jeffrey Richardson alertly recovered a fumble with 1:32 left in the first stanza.
Timpson recovered another fumble with 4:59 remaining in the second quarter but was force to punt the ball back to GHS after just 4 offensive plays. With 2:11 left in the first half Bear Braylon Parker intercepted a Garrison pass and returned it to the GHS 40-yardline. With just 1:13 left until the midway break Braylon Parker hit Albert Parker for a completion which gave THS a first down at the Bulldogs 24-yardline. Sean Matts scored on an 11-yard touchdown run with 59 seconds left in the half. Alexis Castillio added an extra point kick to tie the game at 7-7 before the halftime intermission.
Parker hit Parker once again for a 43-yard Bears score with 8:44 left in the third quarter but the extra point kick attempt was blocked. THS led 13-7. Garrison’s Antonio Yarbrough answered with a 46-yard Bulldogs touchdown run with 5:18 remaining in the third period. Jack Richardson added an extra point conversion kick and GHS led 14-13.
Bear JJ Garner took a snap from the Wildcat formation and raced 67-yards for a score which gave Timpson a 19-14 lead after a failed 2-point conversion attempt with 3:43 left in the third frame.
In the fourth quarter La’Jordan McCollister recovered a Bulldogs fumble with 9:44 left in the game but Timpson was forced to punt the ball back to Garrison later. A 73-yard touchdown by Garrison’s Avery Yarbrough, and his 2-point conversion run, gave the Bulldogs a 22-19 advantage with 4:20 left in the contest. The Garrison defense was able to stave off Timpson on their next drive and then the Bulldogs run the remaining time off the clock for the win.
The Bears will head to San Augustine on Friday, November 8 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Wolves Stadium. The Wolves are 4-5 overall and 1-3 in District 11 after a 45-24 road win at Hemphill last Friday.
