March 11, 2026 - East Texans interested in growing more of their own food are invited to the Successful Edible Gardening Spring Workshop on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at the Tyler Rose Center Complex. Hosted by the Smith County Master Gardeners and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, this free, public program runs from 9:00 a.m. to noon, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m.
This workshop launches a yearlong focus on vegetable and food gardening designed to help gardeners of all experience levels succeed. Whether you’re working with a sunny backyard, a small courtyard, or a few large containers, the program offers practical, research‑based guidance tailored to East Texas soils, weather, and pests.
The morning begins with “Roots Matter: Understanding Soil Biology for Healthier Plants” presented by Clint Perkins, Smith County Ag and Natural Resources Agent. His session highlights how healthy soil biology improves plant vigor, drought tolerance, and nutrient uptake.
At 9:45 a.m., horticulture agent Greg Grant, Ph.D., will present “Design Your Edible Garden,” covering site selection, spacing, fertilization, and planting timelines, along with inspiring examples from a lifetime of edible gardening.
Following a short break, Smith County Master Gardener Dale Wade will offer “Boosting Your Garden,” focusing on tomatoes, peppers, warm‑season crops, and pollinator‑friendly companion planting.
The workshop concludes with a guided tour of the IDEA Garden in the Tyler Botanical Gardens.
Preregistration is encouraged at Successful Edible Gardening. For more information, contact the Smith County Master Gardener Help Desk at smithmghelpdesk@gmail.com or 903‑590‑2994.
