"The Nation We Love" by Bill Holt

July 1, 2026The Nation We Love - By Bill Holt

The muskets flashed in morning light
to break the silence of darkest night

The brilliant red of British coats
now seen depart from their mighty boats

A farmer leaves his new plowed field
with focused dreams that shall not yield

The plow he now changed to a gun
the freedom fight has just begun

Through frozen woods and winter snow
against the king a mighty foe

The common man began to rise
above the crown and cloudy skies

To valley forge and Yorktown's fight
the fire went through the darkest night

The freedoms fire begins to grow
against the winter's ice and snow

The Stars and Stripes begin to rise
beneath the gray and smoky skies

No more the crown shall hold the day
the old world shadows now fade away

Who would have known and who could see
the world they brought that came to be

Beneath the red and white and blue
a nation to love for me and you
