July 22, 2016 - On Saturday, August 6, come out to Mansfield State Historic Site and learn about the medical treatment soldiers received during the Civil War. Using the backdrop of our museum’s hospital scene we will paint a candid picture of what it was like to have to visit what some Union soldiers called, “Uncle Sam’s Sawmill.”
The presentation will be held, at 2 p.m., inside the museum. A reproduction amputation field kit will be on display, and the instruments contained in it will be used to illustrate how surgeons treated battlefield wounds. Also discussed will be the various diseases and illnesses contracted by the soldiers, and how disease ravaged the ranks of both North and South.
