This Week in Shelby County Football

September 9, 2016 - After Week 1 played out, the Tenaha Tigers are the only county varsity football team who remains undefeated. The Tigers defeated the Kerens Bobcats by a 43-12 score, last Friday, and are now 2-0. They beat the Joaquin Rams on Week 0 by a 14-0 score in Joaquin. Tenaha hosts the Dallas Gateway Gators, Friday at 7:30 p.m. Gateway is 1-1 and lost to Temple Christian 31-14, last week, and beat Axtell 22-7 on Week 0.

The Center Roughriders dropped their first game of the season, in a 70-21 loss on the road, to the Gilmer Buckeyes. The 'Riders trailed only 27-21 at the half and held an early lead. They had to change their game plan once the Buckeyes began to pull away. Center is now 1-1 after beating the Rusk Eagles 27-21, in Center on Week 0. Center will travel to Gladewater to face the Bears at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. The Bears are 1-1 with a 29-27 win over Kilgore and a 14-10 loss to Carthage, in a game shortened because of hazardous weather conditions.

The Timpson Bears had a bye last week and are 0-1 after falling on the road to the West Sabine Tigers by a 20-14 score. The Bears will go to Malakoff to face Cross Roads on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Cross Roads is 0-2 and lost 52-6 to Cumby, and 56-19 to Frost.

The Joaquin Rams got into the win column last Friday with a 54-19 road win over the Maud Cardinals. Joaquin is 1-1 after a 14-0 loss to Tenaha on opening day. They will go to Lovelady to face the Lions at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Lions are 1-0 after defeating Anderson-Shiro 48-21 last week. Their opening day game was cancelled because of weather.

The Shelbyville Dragons got their first win at home last week when they beat the Hemphill Hornets by a 20-6 score. They are 1-1 now after they lost to Elkhart by a 42-28 score on opening day. This Friday, they face the Garrison Bulldogs at home, at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs are 2-0 after beating San Augustine 26-7 last week and defeating Bishop Gorman 28-27 on Week 0.
