Eva Melton, 96, of Joaquin, passed away on July 28, 2026.
The viewing will be held at 9am, Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home, 1554 Texas Hwy 7, Center, Texas.
The graveside service will follow at 11:30am at Lone Cedar Missionary Baptist Cemetery, 2068 FM 3082, Joaquin, Texas.
Eva was born in June of 1930 in a house not far from the Lone Cedar Missionary Baptist Church to Annis and John Norris Scruggs. The Scruggs were a relatively large family. She had 5 brothers (Hervy, Chuck, Hilburn, Joe, and John Lloyd Kilpatrick) and 5 sisters (Maydell, Lera, Avis, Errollene, and Audrey).
She graduated from Joaquin High School and then moved to Lufkin to live with her sister, Errollene. She got a job serving sodas, malts, and shakes. This is where she met her husband, Zig Melton. They had a whirlwind romance, and a month later they married and remained married until Zig’s death in 2009. They spent the early years of their marriage in Lufkin and Joaquin until 1961 when they moved to California. They remained in California for over 30 years until they both retired then they returned to Texas.
While in California, Eva obtained a position as a grocery clerk in a major supermarket chain. Later, she was the bookkeeper- a position she held for 25 years, until her retirement.
She loved her church (Church of Christ) and her family (immediate and extended) more than anything. She longed for the day she could be with her Lord and her husband and her mother. Today she is with them and many who preceded her.
Eva is survived by:
Brother, Joe Scriggs
Daughter, Sharon Southard
Son, Dan Melton
And many beloved nieces and nephews
