James grew up in Midwest City, Oklahoma, and graduated from Midwest City High School. It was during his younger years that he met the love of his life, Hortense Romero. The two were married on April 1, 1967, beginning a beautiful journey together that would span more than 59 years. Together, they raised two children and built a life filled with love, family, and countless memories.
James dedicated much of his life to law enforcement and serving the communities in which he lived. He began his career with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Department before going to work for UTMB as a security guard. While at UTMB, he was given the opportunity to attend the police academy, where he earned his peace officer certification. He later joined the La Marque Police Department, serving in the narcotics division.
In 1978, James and his family came to Shelby County. He continued his law enforcement career with the Carthage Police Department. He eventually completed his career in Shelby County, serving as Chief Deputy with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department. Wherever his career took him, James never lost sight of what mattered most—serving and protecting the people in his community. His commitment to law enforcement was more than a profession; it was a way he chose to make a difference in the lives of others.
Away from work, James enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, camping, and traveling, always appreciating the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and make memories along the way. He was an avid reader who could often be found with a good book. His pets also held a special place in his heart, especially Ryder, his beloved dog, and Bella, his cherished cat.
Above all, James treasured his family and the life he and Hortense built together over nearly six decades. His presence, devotion, and service will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to James’s special neighbor, Kevin Exum, for always being there when needed and for the kindness, friendship, and support he so freely gave.
James leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will continue through his family and all those whose lives he touched.
