Mildred "Coodie" Garrett Burrell

Mildred "Coodie" Garrett Burrell, born to the late Robert "Bob" Garrett and Nealie Davis Garrett, in San Augustine, Texas (St. Luke's Community) on December 24, 1925, she passed away peacefully January 24, 2025 in Houston, Texas. She had recently moved to Missouri City, Texas, where she was lovingly cared for by her daughter, Gloria Whorton.

Visitation is 2pm to 6pm on Friday, January 31, 2025 at Sid Roberts Funeral Home, 3535 S.E. Stallings Drive, Nacogdoches, TX. Funeral service is at 11am on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Reed Chapel Baptist Church, 301 Ironosa Road, San Augustine, TX with Rev. Orvin Garrett, Eulogist.

Mildred received Christ at an early age. At the time of her transition, she was a faithful and dedicated member of the Friendship Baptist Church where she served as President of the Usher Board and Church Secretary. She was also known as “The Mother of the Church.” She attended school in San Augustine, Texas (St. Luke Community) and went on to dedicate over 45 years of service to Holly Farms Inc., in Center, Texas. Mildred was the neighborhood beautician, and was also affectionately known as the “Avon Lady,” where she sold Avon for over 40 years, making loving and life long friendships.

Her family and friends knew her by many names: Mama Cootie, Mama, Big Mama, and Grandma. Her wit, laughter, and love for life were contagious. She had a special gift for bringing family and friends together through holiday gatherings, fish fries, Sunday dinners, and canning vegetables and fruit. Mildred also had a deep love for reading her Bible, reading scriptures and making copies to give to family and friends. She also loved working in her garden, singing, telling jokes, working crossword puzzles and watching game shows.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Nealie Garrett; siblings, Roxie Garrett Garner, Alberta Garrett, Annie Garrett Lacy, Lula Garrett Lacy, Verna Garrett, Clara Garrett Cartwright, Jack Garrett, Wyatt Garrett, Willie Garrett, Audrey Garrett, and Amos Garrett; daughters, Jurline Bean and Ollie Mae Garrett; and grandson, Charles "Bubba" Bean.

She leaves to cherish her memories:

Her legacy of love, faith, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
