George Martin McLendon, 92, of Kerrville, formerly of Center, passed away Monday, March 31, 2008 at a Kerrville hospital. He was born October 18, 1915 to Martin Bartow and Carrie Smithson McLendon. George enjoyed spending quality time with his great grandchild, hunting, fishing and his pets. He had many friends and a love of visiting with people. George loved to cut up with people, and help those in need. He was a Christian of Baptist Faith and member of First Baptist Church in Center. Until recently, he was very active with his Masonic Order and recently celebrated his 57nd year with the Sam Samford Masonic Lodge in Center. He had accomplished the Thirty-Third Degree of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. George was one of the last survivors of CCC Co. 880.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, April 3, 2008 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Dr. Joe B. Hooker officiating. Interment will follow at Spann’s Chapel Cemetery in Shelby County.

Pallbearers will be Jefrey Smith, James Honeycutt, Otis Honeycutt, Matthew Porter, Stanley McLendon and Curtis Eaves. Honorary pallbearer will be Maxie Eaves.

J. Hugh Bailey, 93, of Center, passed away Monday, March 31, 2008 at a local nursing home. He was born August 14, 1914 in Center to James Ed Bailey and Lellar Byford Bailey. Mr. Bailey was a member of Neuville Baptist Church, and was also a member of the Shelbyville Masonic Lodge #32.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Dr. Joe B. Hooker officiating. Interment will follow at Short Cemetery in Shelby County.

Felix “Bear Kat” Partin, 75, of Center, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Shelby Regional Medical Center. He was born July 22, 1932 in San Augustine to Felix Smith Partin, Sr. and Virgie Caroline Berry Partin.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm, Sunday, March 30, 2008 at Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Joe Jackson, 45, of Center passed away at his residence in Center. He was born March 31, 1962 in Center to Billy Joe Jackson and Imo Jean Wheeler Jackson. Joe was a lifelong resident of Center. He was a member of Hillcrest Missionary Baptist Church.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, March 28, 2008 at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center. Visitation will be held at Watson & Sons Funeral Home beginning at 1:00 pm Friday, March 28, 2008, and will continue until service time.

Deborah Ann Wilde, 40, of Whitney, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2008 at a Burleson Hospice. She was born July 2, 1967 in Houston to Clarence Prinz, Sr. and Gladys Miller Prinz. Deborah was a homemaker, and loving wife and mother.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Mt. Olive Cemetery in the Silas Community of Shelby County with Bro. Luke Garrett officiating.

Mable Bernice Kimbro Jennings

On March 24, 2008, in Austin, Texas, Mable Bernice Kimbro Jennings moved on to be with the Lord, after an illness that led to the end of her full life of 92 years.

Born in Shelby County, Texas in July 1916, Mable grew up with four sisters and one brother on a farm outside Center and attended Waterman Pentecostal Church and School. She moved to Houston during World War II to aid in the war effort working as a welder at Hughes Tool Company. It was there she met and married Exter Jennings and attended Life Tabernacle Pentecostal Church in Houston. Until her late 60’s, Mable practiced nursing in the Great Houston Area.

Memorial services will be conducted by Brother Steve Harris at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center at 11:00 am on March 27, 2008. Graveside services will follow at 4:00 pm at South Park Cemetery in Houston, where Exter was previously laid to rest.

In lieu of flowers, it was Mable’s desire that contributions be made to the perpetual care fund of Mt. Herman Cemetery. Checks made out to Mt. Herman Cemetery can be mailed to the attention of Ronnie Peace, PO Box 366, Timpson, Texas 75974.

Jackie Porter Sanford, 75, of Center, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2008 in Center. She was born June 17, 1932 in Sardis to Hubbard Sam Porter, Sr. and Robbie Jackson Porter. Ms. Sanford was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a lifelong resident of Shelby County.

Funeral services will be held at 3 pm, Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Watson and Sons Chapel in Center, with Farrell Russell and L.D. Adkinson officiating. Interment will follow in the Sardis Cemetery in Shelby County. Visitation will begin at 5 pm on Monday, March 24, 2008 and continue until service time on Tuesday.

Doris Laverne Cobb Masterson of Center passed away Saturday March 22, 2008 at the age of 79 at Nacogdoches Medical Center.

A Memorial Service was held Monday March 24, 2008 at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church Center, Texas.

Doris was born December 27, 1928 in Birmingham, Alabama to parents, Riley L. & Jewell L. (Estes) Cobb. She was a homemaker and she was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the Runnels Sunday School Class for 39 years and had hosted many of their Sunday school parties in her home. She was also active in the Altar Guild of the church in arranging flowers for worship, changing the paraments, and preparing the communion elements. Doris deeply loved her husband, their four sons, their son’s wives and their grandchildren. Doris was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend and Christian.

She was born September 25, 1930 to Sterling Alfred and Mary Elizabeth (Ryan) McCollum in Manhattan, Kansas. She worked for Sandia Corp. in Albuquerque, NM and she was a librarian for the public library in San Augustine and in Center. She was member of St. Therese Catholic Church

Funeral services for C.R. Nunley, age 78, of Pineland, TX, will be at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at First Assembly of God Church, Timpson, TX. Officiating will be Bro. John Richerson, Bro. Pat Jacks, and Lee Nunley with interment in Adams Cemetery, Panola County, TX. Mr. Nunley passed away in Pineland, TX, March 16, 2008.

Born June 11, 1929, in Logansport, LA, he was the son of W.H. and Myrie (Lee) Nunley. Mr. Nunley retired after 20 years with the Shreveport Police Department and then served with the Logansport, LA, and Center, TX, police departments. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was an ordained minister.

Survivors include wife Geda L. Nunley of Pineland, TX; son Rodney Nunley and wife Lorrie of Shreveport, LA; daughter Veronica Hope McCrary and husband Larry of Nashville, TN; step-daughter Esther O'Harra and husband Daniel of Shelbyville, TX; brothers L.G. Nunley of Doyline, LA, and Darrell Nunley of Houston, TX; sisters Mavis Reel of Deer Park, TX; Almeda Holmes of Shreveport, LA, and Etoile Langford of Lufkin, TX; 6 grandchildren: Brandon Nunley, Tonya Williams, Shane Turnage, Dustin Nunley, Tabitha Nunley, and Victoria Nunley; 11 step grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and 6 step great grandchildren.

Mr. Nunley was preceded in death by his parents, son C. Royal Nunley, Jr., 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Oneita Latimer, 83, of Beaumont died March 11, 2008 at Pine Forest Nursing Home, Beaumont. A Center native, Oneita had been a resident of Beaumont since 1941.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Latimer, of Beaumont, and son, Kenneth Latimer, and his wife Jo of Houston.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a m Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Texas under the direction of Broussard's, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont. A gathering of family and friends will be from 2 pm until 4 pm Friday afternoon March 14, 2008 at the mortuary.

James Harrison Matlock
Funeral services for Mr. James Harrison Matlock, 74, of Mount Enterprise, Texas, will be held at noon Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Laird Funeral Home. Interment will be at Old Prospect Cemetery in Mount Enterprise, Texas. James was born January 11, 1934, in Mount Enterprise, Texas, the son of Ralph Talley and Mattie B Nettles Matlock. Mr. Matlock was a graduate of Mount Enterprise High School. He worked as a Metro bus driver for the city of Houston for 36 years. He loved the outdoors and all sports. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen Delores Matlock; son, Keith Dale Matlock; and his father. He is survived by his mother, Mattie B. Nettles Matlock of Mount Enterprise; sons, Ronnie W. Matlock and wife, Trina, of Baytown, Texas, John W. Ferguson and wife, Nita, of Flower Mound, Texas, and Greg D. Edell C. Odom, 86, of Center, passed away Friday, March 7, 2008 at a local nursing home. She was born August 17, 1921 in Geneva, Texas to John Calvin Sanders and Mattie Oliver Sanders. She was of the Baptist faith.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, March 9, 2008 at Myrtle Springs Cemetery in Sabine County with Bro. Edward McRae officiating.

Anna Mary Schott Motley, died early Friday morning, March 7, 2008. She was born
April 14, 1914, in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Howard Smith Motley, Sr., her parents, Anna Amelia and Frank Sebastian Schott, and
by brothers, Francis J. Schott, D. V. M., and Eugene E. “Brother” Schott.

She was kind. She was genuinely concerned for the well-being of others. She was loyal to her Church, but more than that, she was devoted to God. As a teacher, she was respected by both her students and colleagues, imparting her wisdom with a calm and clear perspective.

She is survived by six children: Anna Lou Motley Nix, Arlington; Howard S. (Buddy) Motley, Jr., Victoria; Schott Motley, Inez; Jack Motley, Edna; Polly Motley, Stowe, Vermont; Mary Martha Motley, Port Lavaca.

Grandchildren include Carol Nix Pope, Kimberly Motley Ballard, Schott Edward Motley, Marianna Nix Peeler, William “Sandy” Motley, Robert Nix, Pauline Motley Traugott, Alan Raby, Clark Felts Motley, Matthew Motley Clouser, Amanda Raby Smith, Emily Francis Motley, Morgan Motley and Mary Claire Scallon. Additionally there are seventeen great-grandchildren.

Each of our relationships with her was different and special We hope we brought her as much happiness as she brought us. Rest, dear Anna. Your work here is done and we will carry on.

Family visitation will be 4:00 - 5:00 p. m. Saturday, March 8, 2008, at Rosewood Funeral Chapels with a Vigil Service to follow at 5:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 p. m. at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral.

Graveside services will be Sunday, March 9, 2008, at 4:00 p. m. at Restland Cemetery in Tenaha, Texas. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Thomas McDavid Hooper Sr., 73, of Gary, Texas, will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 08, 2008, at First United Methodist Church, Timpson. Officiating will be Rev. Lynn Lee and Rev. Lou Thomas with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson.

Mr. Hooper passed away March 5, 2008, in Gary, Texas. Born on October 9, 1934, in Timpson, Texas, he was the son of the late Robin L. and Emma L. (Trammell) Hooper. Mr. Hooper was a graduate of Timpson High School and received his bachelor and master's degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University. He started teaching in Timpson after only 2 years of college and spent 50 years of service in public education as a high school science teacher, coach, high school principal and superintendent. After retirement he continued to teach high school science on a parttime basis.

Mr. Hooper was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church, Timpson, where he served as Chairman of Church Council, Chairman of Trustees and Chior Director. He thought of himself as a simple man who loved simple pleasures especially time spent with family and friends.

Thomas M. Hooper Sr, and Patricia Bailey were married June 12, 1996 and she survives him. Also surviving are four sons; Thomas M. Hooper Jr.and wife Terri of Gary, Texas, Timothy W. Hooper and wife Gail of Gary; Tracy L. Hooper and wife Robin of Timpson and T.Z. Hooper of Gary; step sonMatthew B.Bowlin of Waxahachie, Texas; step daughter Brittany E. Bowlin of Austin, Texas; sister Mary A. Largent of Nacogdoches, Texas. 4 grandchildren; Thomas H Hooper III, Tyler Ann Hooper, Marge Lee Hooper and Alexis Hooper; step grandson Grant Williams.

Mr. Hooper was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Barbara Hooper, brother Robin L. Hooper Jr. and step grandson Garrett Williams.

Visitation will be Friday, March 7, 5-7 PM at Taylor Funeral Home.

Steve Richards, 65, of Friendswood, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008 at Methodist Hospital in Houston. He was born on March 12, 1942 in Joaquin. Steve served in the US Army. He was a Graduate of Texas A & M University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers. He was employed by Taylor & Hill Engineering in Houston. Mr. Richards was of the Baptist faith.

Visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, March 5 at Watson and Sons Chapel with Bro. Mike Cross officiating. Interment will follow at Jackson Cemetery in Joaquin.

Steve was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lorena and T.J. Williams.

Judy McSwain Sammons, 58, of Center, passed away Monday, March 3, 2008 at a local nursing home. She was born June 19, 1949 in Center to D.C. McSwain and Lucille Allen McSwain. Ms. Sammons was a member of First Methodist Church in Center.

Shirley Ann Green Williams Clotiaux, age 49, passed away Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, in San Augustine County, Texas.

Mrs. Clotiaux was born Jan. 5, 1959, in San Augustine as a daughter of John Earl and Addie Walton Green. She worked as a waitress.

Survivors: husband, Robert Eugene Clotiaux; daughters, Brandy Michelle Juergens of Grand Cane, Louisiana, and Nickie Lynn Fanestiel of Joaquin, Texas; parents, John Earl and Addie Green of San Augustine; a brother, Robert Green of Tenaha; sisters, Regina Martinez of Tenaha, Sheila Williams of San Augustine, and Karen Hight of San Augustine; grandchildren, Johnny Ray Green Jr., Holley Chavelle Juergens, Camden Dewayne Hughes, and Madison Ruth Fanestiel; and father of her children, James Earl Hughes.
