Beverly Jones Campbell, 52, of Livingston, formerly of Center, passed away Monday, September 29, 2008 in an automobile accident. She was born March 14, 1956 in Abilene to J.B. Price and Shirlene Moore Price. Beverly was of the Assembly of God Faith.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Thursday, October 2 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, October 3 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home with Bro. Don Windham officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Herman Cemetery in Shelby County.

Verna Joy Ratcliff was born on September 13, 1922, to Viola and Charlie Moore. She confessed her love for Christ at an early age and was baptized. Her walk with Christ started at East Liberty Baptist Church where she was a member all of her life. She served as the Women's Sunday School teacher and a member of the Mission Ministry.

She was married to Wilson Ratcliff in 1945 and to this union four children were born. Her husband and son, Willie George, preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her memory:

Jerry Wayne Kennon age 69 of Center passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008.

Services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Carrol Jones officiating, burial will follow at Spanns Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was born June 27, 1939 to Charles “Slim” Kennon & Mary Eaves Kennon. He was a car salesman for Parker Bros. Motor Co. for 19 years, then Sales Manager for Piney Forest Wood Products for more than 20 years. Mr. Kennon was a member of East Side Baptist Church and a Lifetime member of Amvets Post #2 serving in the United States Army. He was an Endowed Master Mason of Walter M. Pierson # 1339. Jerry loved the outdoors and was an Endowed member of the Attoyac Hunting Club.

Mr. Kennon is survived by his wife Mary Kennon of Center, 3 Daughters: Rochelle Wilson & husband David of Martinsville, Mary Bronwyn of Dallas, and Katha Thomas & husband, Billy of San Antonio, 5 Grandchildren: Chalon Melton, Treston Wilson, Kirby Wilson, Preston Thomas & Mary Peyton Thomas, 1 Brother, Tom Fitzgerald of Joaquin and 1 Sister, Ann Baker of Kokomo, Indiana.

Pamela Sue Wood - Service for Mrs. Pamela Sue Box Wood, 50, of Nacogdoches will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 28, 2008, at Laird Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Sevar of Calvary Baptist Church and the Rev. Glenn Morton of Pine Park United Pentecostal Church officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park. Pamela was born March 5, 1958, in Nacogdoches, the daughter of the late W.O. Box and Sue J. Bobo Box-Redfield.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a homemaker. Pamela was a loving mother and was greatly admired in the community, and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Pamela is survived by her husband, John C. Wood of Nacogdoches; her mother, Sue J. Bobo Box-Redfield of Nacogdoches; two sons, John Christopher Wood and wife, Christy Lyn, of Nacogdoches and Chad Clayton Wood and wife, Jamie Alyssa, of Nacogdoches; one brother, David Glenn Box and wife, Cindy, of Huntington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Melvin George Clark, 59, known by a lot of his friends as Cowboy, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2008. He was born November 20, 1949 to Annie Mae & Marlin Clark.

He worked in sheetrock from the age of 15 and worked in that profession until the year 2000. To be closer to his children and grandchildren, he became a ranch foreman in the Texas Hill Country of Blanco. He had a great love for the outdoors and animals, especially horses. He was a wonderful father and grandfather. It was a privilege to have him in our lives and he will be deeply missed.

At the family’s request, Mr. Clark has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, September 27 at Sardis Pentecostal Church in Shelby County.

Mrs. Eunice Nelson
October 31, 1911 – September 25, 2008

Funeral services for Mrs. Eunice Nelson, age 96 of Center, Texas formerly of Carthage will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy D. Pyles officiating. Interment will follow at Waldrop Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Nelson passed away on Thursday morning, September 25, 2008 in Center, Texas.

Eunice Black Nelson was born on October 31, 1911 in Center, Texas to Sidney J. Black and Sarah P. “Sallie” Forbis Black. She attended Center schools and graduated from Joaquin High School with the class of 1931. She married Travis Jay in October of 1931 and he preceded her in death in February of 1948. In 1952, she married Leonard Nelson and he preceded her in death in December of 1994. Eunice worked for many years at Hawthorn Dry Goods, where she was well known for her specialty alterations. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Carthage, where she was active in the Gleaners Sunday School class, the UMW, and numerous other church activities for many years. Mrs. Nelson was also preceded in death by her parents; an infant son by her first marriage; one brother, Sidney Black; and one sister, Lucille Edison.

Mrs. Nelson is survived by two nieces, Wilsie Taylor and Betty Fausett both of Center and one nephew, Dorman Edison and wife Barnie of Nacogdoches. Mrs. Nelson is also survived by numerous great nieces and great-nephews from the Black and Nelson families, who brought great joy to her, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Serving as pallbearers are Carroll Thomas Brooks, Lynwood Williams, Jim Gaunt, Steve Edison, Randy Fausett, and David Taylor.

Graveside services for Mr. James Cleveland Crawford, age 77 of the Tennessee Community in Shelby County, Texas, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 26, 2008 at Old Tennessee Cemetery with Brother Buddy Hall officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Crawford passed away on Monday morning, September 22, 2008 in San Augustine, Texas.
James Cleveland Crawford was born on August 7, 1931 in the Tennessee Community of Shelby County, Texas to Thomas Temon and Annie Mae Hodges Crawford. Mr. Crawford graduated from Tenaha High School with the class of 1952. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952-1953 and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was transferred to the Reserves in Alaska, serving with the 811th Signal Corp before being honorably discharged 1954. Having learned the trade of communications, Mr. Crawford started working in the civilian sector with Henkel & McCoy and then with GTE where he progressed through field communications to end up in engineering & facilities before retiring after 29 years of employment. He married Evangeline Ketterling Eaves in 1990. Mr. Crawford was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Temon and Annie Mae Hodges Crawford; five brothers: Forest Elmo, Thomas Katlis, Marvin Joe, John Anderson, and Vester Lee; and four sisters, Nora Robinson, Ruby White, Mary Marie, and Jeannie Fay Crawford.

Mr. Crawford is survived by his wife of 18 years, Evangeline Crawford of Center; two sons, Arnold Crawford and wife Darlene of Baytown and Andrew Crawford and wife Joyce of Friendswood; two daughters, Annie Herndon and husband Ed of Ft Worth and Alice Rogers and husband William of Wichita Falls; eleven grandchildren, Christopher, Kyle, and Elizabeth Rogers, Travis and Marshall Herndon, Jennifer, James, Jessica, and Jolene Crawford, and Cameron and Clarke Crawford.

Steven Jay Arnold, Sr., 52, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, September 15, 2008, at Shelby Regional Medical Center. He was born June 5, 1956 in Shreveport to Grady H. Arnold and Rossie Smith Arnold. Mr. Arnold was a member of Asbury Methodist Church in Bossier City, Louisiana. He served in the US Army from 1987 – 1989.

Ruth Mena, age 93, passed away on September 2, 2008 at the Holiday Lodge Nursing home in Center, Texas. She was born November 28, 1914 in the Arcadia Community to parents Jacob Ebben Smith and Dee Ann Jones Smith. Her family settled in Shelby County before Texas was a state.

Mrs. Mena loved animals and nature and was an avid gardener. She was a graduate of the Benz School of Floral Design, a founding member of St. Therese Catholic Church, and a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas . She was a lifelong nurse.

She was preceded in death by her husbands Hoya Doice Grant and Andrew Mena, parents Jacob and Dee Smith, brother Jakie Smith, sisters Effie Nobles and Ruby Dee Smith, and grandson Shawn Grant.

She is survived by:

Sons: Neil Grant and wife Jackie and Noel Grant all of the Arcadia Community.
