Reece V. Casey, 73, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, March 30, 2009 at Shelby Regional Medical Center in Center. He was born May 14, 1935 in Oklahoma. Mr. Casey was of the Baptist faith.

At the family's request, Mr. Casey has been cremated, and a private memorial will be held at a later date.

Funeral for Steve Eric Scott, 51, of Nacogdoches will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Grace Bible Church with the Rev. Justin Beadles and the Rev. Jorge Dinguis officiating. Burial will be at Simpson Campground Cemetery.

Mr. Scott died Sunday, March 29, 2009, in Nacogdoches. Born August 5, 1957, in Port Arthur, he was the son of Jimmie Sue Collier and Wallace E. Scott. He was employed with Center ISD as a behavior management specialist. He was affiliated with Grace Bible Church in Nacogdoches, but had served as pastor of Simpson Campground and Melrose Methodist Churches and First Christian Churches of Nacogdoches and Center.

Survivors include his father, Wallace E. Scott of Port Neches; wife, Peggy Dow Scott of Nacogdoches; daughter, Jennifer N. Scott of Nacogdoches; son, Nathaniel E. Scott of Nacogdoches; brothers, John E. Scott of Nederland and Lee K. Scott of Frisco.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2009, at Laird Funeral Home. At 6:30 p.m. the Tejas Lodge of the Order of the Arrow, Boy Scouts of America, will conduct the ceremony of the Broken Arrow. Rosary will follow at 7 p.m.

Vivian D. Roberts, 74, of Shelbyville passed away Monday March 30, 2009 at Nacogdoches Medical Center.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday April 3, 2009 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Sonny Scarborough and Bro. James Lindley officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. 
Visitation will be Thursday April 2, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

She was born January 23, 1935 to Coy and Ella (Finch) Blondell. She was a member of the White Rock Baptist Church in San Augustine. She worked as a nurses assistant for many years.

She is preceded in death her Parents, Coy and Ella Blondell, Husband, Curtis Roberts, and infant Son, Curtis Roberts.

John Charles "Johnny" Stockman, 49, of Timpson, passed away March 25, 2009 in Timpson. Funeral services for Mr. Stockman will be at 2 PM, Monday, March 30, 2009, at First United Methodist Church Timpson, with Bro. John Richerson, Pastor Jean Ferraro and Bro. Douglas McDonald officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson.

Born in Houston, Texas, on November 21, 1959, Johnny was the son of the late Emmitt Marvin and Sophia Jean (Kurowski) Stockman. He was a graduate of Timpson High School and had worked as an electrician. Johnny was a member of First United Methodist Church, Timpson.

Survivors include a son, Kristopher Stockman of Sugar Grove, West Virginia; a daughter, Cassie Stockman of Garrison, Texas and a brother, James "Jimmy" Stockman of Lake Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be 6-8 PM, Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Taylor Funeral Home, Timpson.

Mary June “Pat” Lunsford, age 73 of Center, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Shelby Regional Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Al Hancock officiating, burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Mangum Funeral Home.

She was born June 29, 1935 in Gladewater, Texas to parents Blackie Capps and Lola Redding Amsden. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 54 years, Porter Lunsford and Brother, Bob Capps. She was of the Baptist faith and she was a homemaker.

Betty Delores Ross Posey, 75, of Logansport, formerly of Joaquin, passed away March 26, 2009 at her home, surrounded by her family.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, March 27 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 28 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Sam Glover officiating. Interment to follow at Truitt Cemetery in Joaquin.

She was born February 15, 1934 in Houston to Oran O’Neil and Willie Mae Mosley Ross. Moma married Daddy, Nathan F. Posey, on September 11, 1948, when she was only 14 years old. To this marriage, four children were born. They shared 61 years together. She was a great help to N.F. during the time they owned and operated Joaquin Construction Company. Moma was the one always running to pick up building supplies, as well as keeping the books. She drove a school bus for Joaquin ISD for a short time. Among her favorite pastimes, were dominos, camping, being on the houseboat fishing and her flowers. But her greatest joy was being with her family. Moma was a very strong person, going through and surviving cancer. She always put her illness second, so that she could be there when we needed her. Moma instilled this in all of us.

Ruben Goatcher, 63, of Center, passed away March 25, 2009 at Pine Grove Nursing Center. He was born August 3, 1945 in Denton Island, east of Tuckerman, Arkansas, to Luther Goatcher and Velvie Reed Brown Goatcher. As a music minister, Ruben was involved in all aspects of Southern Baptist services. During his time as a nursing home administrator, he gave special attention to the residents with personal care. He was a member of the Lion’s Club, and will be fondly remembered for his smile.

Mr. Goatcher has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm, Tuesday, March 31 at the First Baptist Church in Haslam with Bro. Jody Hooper, Bro. Jerry Jones & Bob Argent officiating.

Gilbert Wheeler, 75 of Center, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2009 at his home with his family by his side.

Graveside Services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Center with Bro. Bruce James officiating. Visitation will be all day Monday, March 23, 2009 at Mangum Funeral Home.

Gilbert Wheeler was born in Center at 203 Pearl St. on February 6, 1934 to Don Wheeler and Barksdale Tyre Wheeler. Gilbert graduated from Center High School and received a master’s degree from SFA.

Gilbert married Kathryn Monk Wheeler, his beloved wife of 53 years. They have been long time members of the Center Christian Church, where Gilbert served as an elder.

The Wheelers moved to Lufkin where Gilbert taught Agriculture in Redland, Texas. After a year of teaching, the Wheelers returned to Center where Gilbert worked for Ralston Purina as a Productive Manager.

Gilbert bought Lewis Brown’s feed store in East Center when Lewis bought Tuck Griffin’s Furniture store. He also bought Drury McCauley’s feed inventory to supplement his store. The business was called Farmer’s Feed Supply. Later, Gilbert moved his business across the street to the old Magnolia Building. He and Kathryn stayed in the feed business for 18 years. They also raised chickens for 50 years and continue to raise cattle. For over 40 years, Gilbert owned and operated Farmer Fertilizer Company in Center and continued working even with his illness. With his courageous wife Kathryn, by his side, Gilbert fought a brave 12 year battle with Prostate Cancer. He was a great Storyteller! One of his favorite sayings about everything was “It builds Character”.

He is preceded in death by his Father, Don Wheeler, Mother, Barksdale Crenshaw, Step-Father, Bryan Crenshaw, Son-in-law, Marty Ray Brittain, Jr. and Sister-in-law, Barbara Wheeler.

Bro. Henry Ralph Wells, age 78, of Broaddus, Texas, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009.

Bro. Wells was born Nov. 4, 1930, in Broaddus as a son of the late Lucius "Bunch" Wells and Viola (Ponder) Wells. He was a longtime Baptist minister and also retired from Combined America Insurance Company as a sales agent. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of Greenwood Baptist Church.

Survivors: wife, Mae Etta Wells, to whom he was married June 8, 1955; children, Shirley Ward and husband Buddy of Highlands, Texas, Wanda Fann and husband Bryan of Corrigan, Texas, Ray Wells and wife Cynthia of Timpson, Texas, Fay Hudson and husband Bill of Alto, Texas, Cathy Wells of Zavalla, Texas, and Amy Land and husband Ted of Bronson, Texas; brothers, Odell Wells of Baytown, Texas, and Dewey Wells and James Wells, both of Broaddus, Texas; a sister, Alene Lofton of Broaddus, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Leroy Wells.

Funeral services are set for 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at Trinity Baptist Church on Hwy. 83 in Broaddus, Texas, with Bro. Glenn Middleton and Bro. J.R. "Bob" Gwin officiating. Interment will follow at Broaddus Cemetery with veterans honors.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine.

OB Hughes, 78, of Center, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born October 12, 1930 in the Short Community of Shelby County to Druie Hughes and Myrtie Monroe Hughes. OB served in the US Army, followed by a 37 year career with Mobil Pipeline. After retiring to his family place in Center, he worked for Martin Resources until the time of his death.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Thursday, March 19th at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, March 20th at the First Baptist Church in Center, with Rev. Robert Morris and Rev. Michael Hale officiating. Deborah Jean Tuscana, age 58, of Brazoria, Texas funeral services will be 1 PM, Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at First Baptist Church, Timpson, with Rev. Josh Walters officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson. Mrs. Tuscana passed away Monday, March 16, 2009 in Nassau Bay, Texas.

Born February 18, 1951, in Freeport, Texas, Deborah Jean Tuscana was the daughter of the late James Bradberry and Norma Jean Epps. She was employed in the Data Entry Department of Shell Oil Company.

Survivors include her husband Jodie Tuscana of Brazoria; son Troy Tuscana and wife Brooke of Dickinson; daughter Angelina Shaddock and husband Joe of Brazoria; 2 brothers: James Paul Bradberry of Pasadena and Jimmy Bradberry of Reno, Nevada; 3 sisters: Anna Lou Carson of Lake Jackson, Annette Williams of McAllen, and Shanna Schoening of Pearland, Texas; 5 grandchildren: Joseph Tuscana and Elisha, Alanna, Emma, and Journey Shaddock; special friends Bill and JoAnn Cowley. Funeral services for Annie Elizabeth DeEtte (Briery) Harvey, age 84, of Gary, Texas wil be at 10 AM, Wednesday, March 18, 2009 in Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, Timpson, with Bro. Thad Mills officiating. Interment will follow in Corinth Cemetery, Timpson. Mrs. Harvey passed away Sunday, March 15, 2009 in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Born July 2, 1924, in Gary, Texas, Annie Harvey was the daughter of the late William Bryan and Lottie Mae (Wiltcher) Briery. She was a graduate of Gary High School. On May 5, 1946, she and Burtis Owen Harvey were married, and they celebrated 51 plus years of marriage befoe his death in 1998.

Survivors include two sons Charles Wayne Harvey and wife Yvonne of Herber Springs, AR, and William Owen Harvey of Buna, Texas; daughter Martha Boren and husband Wesley of Carthage, Texas; grandchildren: Jackie Harvey and Missie Harvey, Lesley Boren and Christopher Harvey; two great grandchildren; Tyler and Kylee Harvey; two sisters: Norma Jean Watson of CA and Gay Carrell and husband T.A. of Pottsboro, Texas; two brother-in-laws: Veston "Teeny" Harvey and wife Ester and Elton "Shorty" Harvey and wife SueAnn; special friends: Glen and Bobbie Williams and their children, Dinna Haltom and friend and caregiver, Emelia Lewis. Eddie W. Mahan went to join his Lord and Savior, March 13, 2009 in a Nacogdoches hospital. He was born March 17, 1922 in Nacogdoches County to Samuel T. Mahan and Eliza Jane Oliver Mahan. Mr. Mahan was a minister, insurance adjuster, carpenter and had worked in mobile home sales. He served his country in the U.S. Army where he was an Army Ranger with the Second Indian Head Division. Eddie was a survivor of the Omaha Beach Campaign at the Normandy Invasion. He was awarded the EAME Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart with one Bronze Cluster, and a Bronze Star Medal. Mr. Mahan was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Second Infantry (Indian Head) Division. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Center and had taught Sunday School at Pine Grove Nursing Center.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Sunday, March 15, 2009 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, March 16, 2009 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Eddie Lee Mahan and Rev. Carl Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Old Salem Cemetery in Center.

Addie Johnson, 94, of Center, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2009 in a local nursing center. She was born December 2, 1914 in Center to Mack Gillis and Anzania Strahan Gillis. Ms. Johnson was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Spann’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Wilma Laverne Parker, 82, of Shelbyville, died Monday, March 9, 2009.

Graveside services were held at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center with Rev. Gordon Vaughn officiating.

She is preceded in death by her parents Mr. Burnard Zelbern Parker and Mattie Borders Parker; a brother, Neelan Parker; and a sister, Mary Parker Van Pelt.

Wilma was born April 6, 1926 in Shelby County. She graduated from Shelbyville High School, was a homemaker, and owned a beauty salon for many years. Wilma was well-known as an excellent cook, a hardworker, and famous for ability to take care of other people. She possessed the beauty, strength and endurance reminiscent of the women who settled this land many years ago.

Survivors are one daughter, Gay Maria Carter Ali of Shelbyville; three sons, Kit Carter, Bob Carter and Mac Carter all of Shelbyville; four sisters, Jean Permenter of Jacksonville, Zelma Dearing and Alene Carriker of Center, and Judy Brown of Shelbyville; one brother Lewis Parker of Center; and six grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were Kris Carter Ali, Kevin Carter Ali, Vic Carter and Mikel Carter.

Donell Parker, 78, of Center, passed away Saturday March 14, 2009 at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2009 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Steve Evenson and Bro. Pat Windham officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Sunday March 15, 2009 at Mangum Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

He was born March 2, 1931 in Shelby County to parents, Clint and Bertha (Corbell) Parker. He served in US Marines during the Korean War. He was a member of the Shreveport First Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was a faithful member of the Shelby County Singing Convention. He worked for Woody’s Welding Works in Center for 20 years and he retired from Center Plywood where he worked for over 20 years. He was currently employed at Mangum Funeral Home.

He is preceded in death by his Parents, Clint and Bertha Parker and Brother, Orell Parker and infant Brother, Glenn Parker.

Mike O'Donnell, 64 and Beth O'Donnell, 56 of Center passed away Friday, March 13, 2009 as a result of an automobile accident. Mike was born October 19, 1944 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Guy O'Donnell and Nellie O'Donnell. Beth was born November 27, 1952 in Center to Arthur P. Waller and Jimmie Louise Yarborough. Mike served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. They were the owners and operators of B & M Landscaping in Center.

Mrs. Rubye Mae Lister Biggers, 84, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2009. Services will be held Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Bright Morning Star Baptist Church, MLK Drive, Center, Texas. Services are under the direction of Hicks Mortuary, Center, Texas.

Mrs. Rubye Mae Lister Biggers was the first of six children born to the late Mr. Willie E. Lister, Sr. and Mrs. Dolena Chumley Lister on February 11, 1925, in the Todd Spring Community of Shelby County. She attended and graduated from C. H. Daniels High School in Center. She furthered her education at Butler College in Tyler, Texas and later at Prairie View A&M University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1951 and a Master of Education in 1957.

She united with the Todd Spring Baptist Church at an early age. Upon moving to Center in the late 1940s, she united with Bright Morning Star Baptist Church. She was a loyal an active member, serving as church secretary, chairperson of the program committee, Sunday school teacher and president of the deaconess board.

Upon completing her sophomore year in college, she began her teaching career with Center Independent School District as second grade teacher. She was only 20 years old. She taught for Center Schools for forty years, retiring in 1985. During her tenure, she taught throughout the grades, including twenty years at the high school level as an English teacher. At the time of her retirement, she had returned to the campus from which she graduated and at which she began her career, teaching language arts in the intermediate grades. In her forty years of service she taught her brothers, nieces, nephews, the children of those she'd taught in years before and even her own son. Upon retirement, she continued as a substitute teacher for another ten years until 1995, giving fifty years of uninterrupted service to Center ISD.

She was also actively engaged in her community. In 1991, she was elected to the Center City Council, serving until her death. Additionally, she was a member of the Shelby County Historical Society and Toledo Bend Retired Teachers.

She received numerous honors and awards. Most notably, in 1996, the State of Texas recognized her for 50 years of service to education. Additionally in 1999 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Shelby County Heritage Foundation, becoming the first recipient of this award.

She was married to Mr. Cator Biggers on March 29, 1952. They had one son, Karl. They remained married for over twenty-nine years until his death on May 3, 1981. She was also predeceased by her parents and her brothers, James O. Lister and Willie E. Lister, Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory, one son: Karl, a sister: Mrs. Odelle L. Coleman, two brothers: Mr. Vinnie S. Lister and Mr. Clyde H. Lister, Sr., three sisters-in-law: Mrs. Norma L. Lister, Mrs. Limmie N. Lister and Mrs. Joy L. Lister; one brother-in-law: Mr. Booker G. Coleman and countless nieces, nephews, cousins and former students.

David Franklin Bates, 29, of Joaquin, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2009. He was born January 8, 1980 in Carthage to Robert Milton Bates and Mary Kay Glaze Bates. Edith Shepherd, 99, of Shelbyville, formerly of Woodville, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at her home. She was born September 23, 1909 in Woodville to mark & Cora Weeks Fortenberry. She was a longtime resident of Woodville, but had lived in Shelbyville for the past eight years. She had worked years ago for Southwestern Bell as a telephone operator and many years as a volunteer "Pink Lady" for the Tyler County Hospital Auxiliary.

Funeral services were held at 1 PM, Friday, February 27th at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home Chapel in Woodville. Interment followed at Magnolia Cemetery in Woodville.

Stella Faye Williams, age 58 passed away Monday, March 2, 2009. Stella was born September 16, 1950 to the late R.T. and Mae Bell Jones Williams.

Viewing will begin at 11AM and Services will be held at 1PM, Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ, Center, Texas. Prince Howard Cloudy Sr. officiating, interment will follow at Westview Cemetery, Center, Texas.
Her family and friends will miss her, but rejoice that she is now in the presence of our Lord, and Savior, Jesus Christ

Sisters: Della Mae (Jerry) Gardner, Shirley Faye Williams Hewitt (faithful brother-in-law: L.H. Hewitt), and Sharon Dian Williams all of Center, Texas; special brother-in-law: Jackie Williams; sister-in-law: LaSandra Williams of Sour Lake, Texas; special god sister: Joyce Lynn Johnson of Center, Texas; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Stella is preceded in death by 3 brothers: R.T. Williams Jr., Tommy Lee (Barbara Jean) Williams and James L Williams.


Bernice Brittain, 79, of Center, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at her home. She was born July 14, 1929 in the East Hamilton Community of Shelby County to Sam Coleman Nichols and Della Gotchie Nichols. Ms. Brittain was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Wednesday, March 4 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, March 5 at East Hamilton Cemetery in Shelbyville with Bro. Ron Luman officiating.

Pallbearers will be Gene Gray, John Drennon Yarborough, Scott Yarborough, Andy Castleberry, Shad Lout, Nicky Wiggins, Joe Yarborough and David Spratley. Honorary pallbearer will be Jack Lout.

Wynell Peacock, age 83, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2009 in Houston. Wynell was born March 20, 1925 to Autsin Wheeler and Vera Kimbro Wheeler.

Services will be held at 1 PM, Monday, March 2, 2009 at Mt. Pleasant Church of Christ with Rev. Ronnie Wheeler officiating, interment will follow at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Survivors include:
Sons: John Peacock and wife Karen of Spring and Terry Dry and wife Kelli of League City.
Daughter: Connie Peacock of Houston
4 Grandchildren: Chase Peacock, Hanna Peacock, Darla Faith Stewart and Courtland Peacock.
