Elda Dunning, 91, of the Paxton Community, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Nacogdoches Medical Center.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later time.

She was born June 10, 1917 in Long Pond, PA to Stanley R. and Carrie Mae (Everett) Dunning. She was a Biology & Science Teacher in various places for 38 years.

She is preceded in death by her Parents, Stanley and Carrie Dunning and Brother, Everett Dunning.

Mary Ann “Judy” Hand, 77, of Huxley formerly of Amarillo, passed away May 30, 2009 at Dubuis Health System in Shreveport, LA.

Services will be 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Wayne Bickley officiating. Burial will follow at Strong Cemetery in Huxley. Visitation will be Monday, June 1, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

She was born October 30, 1931 in Missouri to Al and Sadie Longacre. She was a hostess on a Five Star Luxury Trailways Bus for many years and she also worked in maintenance for Trailways. She was a member of Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church in Huxley. Each year she and her husband traveled south to Weslaco to spend the winter.

She is preceded in death by her Parents, Al and Sadie Longacre, Granddaughter, Christina Hand, 2 Brothers and 2 Sisters, Wilma Wilson and Kitty O’Daniel.

Jimmy Carter, 93, of Center, passed Friday, May 29, 2009 at Shelby Regional Medical Center.

A Masonic Service will 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel under the direction of Sam Samford Lodge #149 and the services officiated by Bro. Jim Bradley. Military Graveside Service will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park under the direction of VFW Post #8904. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 3, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was born September 14, 1915 in Palestine, Texas to Nick and Alma Carter. He moved with his family to Ft. Worth, Texas when he was 3 years old. He was educated in Ft. Worth, Texas, finishing his education at Texas Christian University. He served in the infantry during World War II in France, starting at Omaha Beach, then in Paris where his company paraded down the Champ DeChelis, then Northern France and into Belgium, Luxembourg and into Germany. He earned a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star medals. His injuries were not life threatening, but he had to serve for 119 continuous days in combat. When he returned from the war, he moved to Baytown where he went into the automobile business. When he retired from this business, he and his wife, Treva moved to Center, Texas and opened Center County Club Nursery, which they operated for 25 years. He was a lifetime member of the Sam Samford Masonic Lodge #149, VFW and the Optimist Club.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Alma and Nick Carter, Wife, Treva Carter, Daughter, Adrian Carter,

Thomas Emanuel Vandygriff, 86, of Jasper, Texas, passed away at his home on May 6, 2009. He was born 1-16-1923 in East Mayfield, Sabine County, Texas, to David Henry Vandygriff and Mary Jane Woodard Vandygriff. Visitation for Mr. Vandygriff, better known to his family and friends as Emanuel, Son, Uncle Son or Uncle Vandy, was held at 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7th at the Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper and military graveside services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2009, at the Mt. Herman Cemetery in Center, Shelby County, Texas.

A longtime resident of Jasper County, Texas, Emanuel enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a WWII U. S. Army Veteran. He was formerly married to Florine “Crickett” Warr

Vandygriff who preceded him in death. She was the daughter of Ernest G. & Liddie Warr of Center.

Nina Campbell Smith, 91, of the McClelland Community passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at her residence. She was born December 29, 1917 in Huxley to Jim Fred Campbell and Callie T. Furlow. Ms. Smith was retired from the Shelbyville School District where she worked in the cafeteria. She was a member of the McClelland Community Church.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Friday, May 29th at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 30th at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Garrel Faulkner and Rev. Jerry Powell officiating. Judge J.L. Smith, age 86, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, at a local hospital.

Judge Smith was born Nov. 19, 1922, in Hemphill, Texas, as a son of the late Lucille (Hoell) and Russell Allen Smith. He had lived in San Augustine several years.

Judge Smith had a long life of service. He was a graduate of Baylor University's law school and practiced law in the East Texas area several years. He served a number of years as District Judge for the 273rd District Court, serving San Augustine, Sabine, and Shelby Counties, and had also served as a district attorney and prosecutor, along with service on the board of regents for Lamar University and as president of the San Augustine School Board of Trustees. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He and Joy Babcock were married in 1943. She preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 2007. Judge Smith was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stephanie Dawn Stanley, in 2005.

Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dr. Richard Stanley of Abilene, Texas; grandsons, Russell Stanley and wife Lauren of Rule, Texas, and Richie Stanley and wife Gabby of Abilene, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Alexis Stanley and Katie Stanley.

Funeral services are set for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at Calvary Baptist Church on East Columbia Street in San Augustine with Bro. Russell Stanley officiating. Interment will follow at Liberty Hill Cemetery in San Augustine.

Visitation will be held Friday, May 29, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine.

Frances R. Glaze, 90, of Joaquin, went to be with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Sunday, May 24, 2009. She was born February 2, 1919 in Center, Texas

She married Melvin Lee “Bud” Glaze in 1935 and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage until his death in 1994.

Frances loved life, her husband, her son, two granddaughters, four great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Haslam, which she referred to as her church family. She was a blessing and inspiration to all who knew her.

Michael L. "Mickey" Wigley, 69, of North Richland Hills, went to be with our Lord on May 20, 2009 in Fort Worth surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Houston on September 2, 1939 to Jasper E. and Mildred Wigley. A 1962 graduate of Southwestern Assemblies of God University, Mickey pastored congregations in Texas and Louisiana, making many exceptional friends and establishing lifelong relationships along the way.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 23rd at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Glendon Marie Burnaman Warr, 62, of Joaquin, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at a Lufkin nursing home. She was born July 16, 1946 to Rufus Burnaman and Cloie Belle Denman Burnaman. Glendon was a faithful pastor’s wife, mother and grandmother. She had had a leadership role in the Jackson Baptist Church Women’s Missionary Auxiliary, and had even been a reporter for the Mt. Olive District W.M.A. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Joaquin.

Mildred Louise Jones, 79, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2009. She was born on August 20, 1929 in Center, Texas to Terrell and Neoma Holt. Mildred had been a resident of Pearland for 28 years, formerly of Center, Texas. She was a member of First Church of Pearland and the Nifty Fifties.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Charles Edward Jones. Jacques Henri Marcel Castelain
July 18, 1926 – April 19, 2009

A great man has been lost, and like many of his generation, the world will never see another like him.

Jacques Castelain is survived by a family that spans three continents, if not more. He is the grandson-in-law of Will and Sallie Duncan of Shelby County, Texas and will be buried near them at Duncan Cemetery for a graveside service on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 3:00 p.m.

Jacques Castelain is survived by his wife, Pamela Duncan-Nowell Castelain, the granddaughter of Will and Sallie Duncan. He is also survived by numerous Duncan family members and well as two children, two grandchildren, two brothers and many cousins.

Jacques was known as a good fisherman and loved going offshore. He had been a charter boat Captain in Galveston, Texas in the 1970’s-1980’s. He also was a pilot, historian, and geographer, spoke several languages, was a connoisseur of fine food & wine and helped many people during his lifetime.

He has family in France and Morocco, having been born in the Dunkirk, France region and raised in Morocco after World War II. As a 12-year old child, he survived the bombing of Dunkirk by Adolf Hitler in May 1940, was imprisoned by the Germans in summer 1940 and escaped. He was aided by the French Resistance in his escape to the Free Zone near Spain where his father, Henri Paul Castelain and his uncle, Numa Castelain were serving in the French air force outside occupied France. His uncle and father were famous war pilots in France during WWII.

Jacques served in the French army in North Africa as a Lieutenant, having campaigns in the French Foreign Legion and the Moroccan Tiraeurs. He was an expert in weaponry.
Jacques graduated from St. Cyr, a prestigious French military school and then graduated from the Ecole des Mines to become a Mining Engineer. He was the official in charge of the Mines of Zellidja in Bou-Beker, Morocco. He then joined Leroy Equipment in the U.S. in 1953 where he worked as a Mining Engineer near the Canadian border. 
Shortly thereafter, with Count D’Ornano, he helped to launch Orlane cosmetics in the U.S. and later worked as a District Sales Manager for Orlane, Halston, Missoni, and Albert Nipon among others. After more than 40 years in the cosmetics and perfume industry, he retired to Naples, Florida. Jacques was also an artist and musician, having attended the Ecole de Beaux-Arts in France before military service, and he especially loved Dixieland Jazz and Big Band music.

Hank Wideman, age 81, of Timpson, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at his home in Timpson. He was born on February 14, 1928 in Austin, Texas, the son of Henry Leonard Wideman, Sr. and Edna Thiele Wideman. Memorial services are planned for Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 11:00 am at Tennessee Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kenneth Verner officiating. Hank's passion was fishing and went every chance he could. His lifetime carrier was in delivering the newspaper, he started carrying the news when he was 12 and did not retire until he was 78.

Jeanette Kaluza, was born on October 4, 1955 in Galveston, Texas the daughter of Arnold F. Kaluza Sr. and his wife Helen. She passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Woodlawn Heights Medical Center in Lufkin due to a massive heart attack. 

Jeanette was a resident of Lufkin State School for many years and considered all the caregivers and her co-residents her extended family. She came into our lives to teach us "Faith". Job well done!

Jeanette was preceded in death by her father, Arnold F. Kaluza, Sr.

Roxanne Brinson, 32, of Timpson, passed away Friday, May 15, 2009 at the Nacogdoches Medical Center in Nacogdoches. She was born on October 8, 1976 the daughter of John Frank Brinson and Zina Mae Wolf Brinson.

She is survived by her father, John Frank Brinson of Timpson; mother, Zina Thompson of Vacaville, CA; sister, L'erin Brinson of Vacaville, CA; two sons, Colton Miles Carr of Zuni, VA and John Tristan Brinson of Vacaville, CA; grandmothers, Bobbie Brinson and Betty Wolf; aunts, Pam Franklin and her husband Larry, Cindy Brinson, Carol Brinson and Velma Wolf; and by her uncle William Wolf, Jr.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, John T. Brinson and William E. Wolf, Sr.

Maude Elizabeth "Billie" Fowler Melton 83, was born February 22, 1926 and passed away Wednesday May 13, 2009.

Although officially born Maude Elizabeth Fowler in Center, Texas, Shelby County, she was affectionately known by all as "Billie".She married Price Melton April 11, 1942, and they enjoyed 45 years of marriage until his death in 1993. She will now join Price in eternity at Camp Ruby Cemetery.Billie loved life, her husband, her children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. And she was a true friend to all of those lucky enough to have known her.

Maude is survived by her two sisters Lillie Marie Farrington of Richardson, and Evelyn Lorraine Carter of Galena Park, two daughters Elizabeth Ann Shelly of Coldsprings, and Patsy Elaine Keene and husband Jimmy of Buna, and one son John Richard Melton of Houston. She is also survived by her 4 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Larry Norman Sigler, age 61 of Manvel, Texas, died tragically in an auto accident on May 6, 2009. He is preceded in death by his parents, Norman & Ola (Howard) Sigler, four brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Doris Sigler; children Russell Peveto & his wife Kim, Brent Peveto & his wife Jennifer, Melissa Garner & her husband Bryan, and Paul Peveto & his wife Dawn; brothers, James Sigler & his wife Faye, Billy Sigler & his wife Geri, and Jeff Sigler; sisters, Edna Kennon, Johnnie Whitton & her husband E.J., Wanda Rychlic, Frances Nettles & her husband Tommy, and Joann Andrews; twelve grandchildren; and a host of many other family & friends.

Larry was born on July 13, 1947 in Center, Texas. He resided in the Houston area since 1970 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He was self-employed as a bucket truck service operator and was very innovative in this line of work around the Houston and surrounding areas. For more than thirty years, he worked in this profession and was a walking map of Houston and an expert at setting service routes for his business. Larry loved hunting, especially deer, and spending time with his family and friends. He was known affectionately to all his grandchildren as “Paw Paw”. When Larry & Doris met, he went from a single man to a family of six overnight and it was unconditional love for thirty-four years. Larry’s wonderful memory will always live on in the hearts of the family and friends who knew and loved him.

Larry’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 beginning at 10:00 am. A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 am in the Clayton Funeral Home Chapel.

Bobby “Doc” L. Hinton, 73, of Groves, Texas passed away at Harbor Hospice House in Beaumont on Friday May 8, 2009. He was born April 17, 1936 to Elizabeth Sojourner Hinton and Ernest Hinton in Joaquin, Texas. He graduated from Joaquin High School. Bobby has been a resident of Groves for over 53 years. He retired from Ameripol-Synpol as a pipefitter after 37 years of service. He was affiliated with Pipefitters Local # 195 for over 30 years. Bobby was a member of Val Verde Baptist Church in Groves, where he has served as a deacon since 1959. He has served on the Board of Directors for Pine Ridge Community Cemetery since its inception. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family.

Ms. Henry was a past member of the Center Music Club and the Alpha Phi Sorority of Norman, Oklahoma. She was a member of First Christian Church of Center. Ms. Henry and her husband owned and operated Western Auto in Center for 25 years.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, May 8th at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Graveside services will be held, 2 PM, Saturday, May 9th at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center with Bro. Aubrey McSwain officiating.

Funeral services for Dr. Alfred Roy Wallace, 71, of Waskom, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009, at First Baptist Church of Waskom with Dr. Neil Weaver officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Tyler. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Friday, May 8, 2009 at Sullivan-Heaster Funeral Home.

Dr. Wallace passed away on Tuesday, May 05, 2009, in Waskom. He was born May 28, 1937 in Tyler to Manzy Arnold and Maggie Aurora Wallace.

Dr. Wallace pastored five different churches in Texas and Missouri and had served on the staff of Louisiana Baptist University since 1993, first as Dean of the Department of Biblical Studies and then as Academic Dean. An avid scholar that continued to study all of his life, he was an excellent teacher of the Bible and the Greek and Hebrew languages. He had authored nearly forty books and pamphlets including a Hebrew textbook. He continued to teach at LBU and to pastor Baptist Temple in Waskom at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Lorain Wallace of Waskom; sisters, Alice Joyce Beggs of Tyler, Mary Frances McArthur of Tyler, and Anna Catherine Little of Tyler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Manzy and Maggie Wallace; and a brother, John Wallace.

Pallbearers will be Chris Keeny, Joshua Keeny, Mark, Crook, Steve Petty, Jason Lopez, and Roger Morton.

He was a member of Timpson Masonic Lodge and the Timpson Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mr. Russell served in the National Guard.

William David “W.D.” George, Sr., , 77, of Nacogdoches, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Stallings Court Nursing Home in Nacogdoches.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday May 8, 2009 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bryan Tyre officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Thursday May 7, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was born January 19, 1932 to Joseph H. and Mae (Owens) George in Nacogdoches, but grew up in the Beaumont Area. After graduating high school, he attended Stephen F. Austin State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry. After working for several timber companies after college, David founded “W.D. George Wood Company,” which was a successful timber company in East Texas for over 25 years. He was a member of New Hope Congregational Methodist Church in Nacogdoches where he served as a deacon. David should be remembered as an avid hunter and fisher, a patriot, a Christian, and a friend to many.

He is preceded in death by his Parents, Joseph and Mae George and Sister, Mary Jo Lista.

Mattie Betty (Nettles) Matlock, 93, of Mt. Enterprise passed away Saturday May 2, 2009 at Green Acres Nursing Home in Center. She was born on May 24, 1915 to Tom and Monnie (Long) Nettles in upper Nacogdoches County.

Services for Mrs. Matlock will be held at Cason-Monk-Metcalf funeral home in Nacogdoches on Monday, May 4, 2009, at 11:00am in Sunset Chapel. Interment will be at the Old Prospect Cemetery in Mt. Enterprise. Visitation will be Sunday evening, May 3 from 5 - 7pm.

She is survived by daughter, Rita Hughes and husband, Richard, of Center and three sons: Jerry Matlock and wife, Charlcye; Troy Matlock and Gary Matlock, all of Mt. Enterprise.

Also by 22 grandchildren, including Terrie Elliott and husband, James of Center; Jerrald Moore and wife, Karen, of Nacogdoches; Mary Linda Moore of Dallas and Christy Moore of Empire, Michigan.

Billy Joe Essery, 79, of Timpson passed away May 01, 2009, in Timpson after a long courageous battle with cancer. His loving and strong character will always be admired. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a dear friend of many.

Billy J. Essery was born in Timpson on October 25, 1929. He served in the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War and retired from Shell Chemical Company after 38 years of dedicated service. He was preceded in death by his parents T.F. "Bud" and Adelle (Eakin) Essery and brother Edd W. Essery.

Billy J. Essery leaves behind his wife of 55 years Ada Louise Essery; his children Donna McAdams and husband Mark of LaPorte, Texas, David Essery and wife Sherry of Garland, Texas and Diana Essery of Rowlett, Texas. He was adored by his grandchildren and will be deeply missed by them all- J.C Creel, Josh Essery and wife Lindsay and Kristin McAdams.

Graveside services will be held at Corinth Cemetery in Timpson at 10:30 AM, Monday May 4, 2009, with Bro Mike Fodge officiating.
