Arlon B. Allen, 90, of Lufkin, was born January 25, 1920 in Gehagan, Louisiana, the son of the late Lanora (Squyres) and John Henry Allen. He passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010 in a local hospital.

Mr. Allen was a retired carman with Southern Pacific Railroad. He served his country with the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of Lufkin;s First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his son, Jerry W. Allen of Houston; daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Richard Benoit of Vidor; daughter Nancy Patterson of Beaumont; brother, Evin Allen of Pearland; grandchildren, Julie Kitchen, Amy Riddle, Melissa Coon, Clavin Sharp, Kristena Smith, Lori Perkins, Shawn Benoit and Raven Odoms; 13 great-grandchildren; special nieces, Carolyn Lightfoot and Pat Bailey; and a number of other nieces, nephews and family members.

Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Allen, in 1999; 3 brothers and 6 sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Allen's memory may be made to Lufkin's First Baptist Church, 106 E. Bremond, Lufkin, Texas 75901.

Services for Mr. Allen will be held at 3:00 p.m.Saturday, May 1, 2010 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr.Andrew G. Pittman officiating. Eulogy will be offered by Mollie Allen. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6-8 pm, Friday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.

Era B. Enmon, 94, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010. She was born September 18, 1915 in Shelbyville to Joe C. Dockens and Ima Jacobs Dockens. She was a member of Clever Creek Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, April 30, 2010 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm, Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Rev. Pat Windham and Rev. Donald Noble officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

James Zack “Dude” Mills, 80, of Center passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at a Shreveport hospital. He was born October 30, 1929 in Pineland to James Burke Mills and Clanty Delilah Thomas Mills. Mr. Mills served in the US Air Force, and was a member of VFW Post 8904 and Sam Samford Masonic Lodge #149. He was a member of Center Missionary Baptist Church. 

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, April 30, 2010 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Pat Windham and Bro. Bryan Opbroek officiating. Furman Davis, 88, long-term resident of Center, Texas, passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at his daughter’s home in Georgetown, Texas.

Furman Davis was born and raised in Center, Texas, the youngest son of John and Jessie Davis. Furman married Mary Jo Matthews in Center, Texas in 1946. Mary Jo passed away in 1996 after 50 years of marriage. Furman is survived by his four loving children Dianna Davis Forest, Brenda Davis Fye, Victor Furman Davis and David Matthews Davis. He is also survived by sons-in-law Duncan Forest and Jerry Fye and daughter-in-law DeDe Davis. Furman will also be missed by his 5 grandchildren, Kristin Heath, Kyle Alston, Dianna Boorman, Allison Davis and Nathan Davis, as well as 6 great grandchildren, 2 nephews and a niece and numerous cousins and long-time friends. He will be especially missed by his close friend Mildred Bradberry.

Furman’s first career was in service to his country in the Texas National Guard, the United States Army and the United States Air Force from November 1938 until he retired in January 1972. Furman began his Army service in Texas Company D 144th Infantry. He served domestically at Ft. Lewis, Washington and Wilmington, North Carolina, patrolling coastal and inland waterways. He then served in Oran, French Morocco and Naples, Italy. He joined a heavy weapons company in Anzio, Italy for a campaign to capture Rome. From Rome he went back to Naples to train for the invasion of Southern France. On August 15, 1944 he participated in an assault landing invasion of Southern France and subsequent campaigns through France to the German border. He was wounded in action and received numerous decorations and awards for his service and bravery including a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and numerous campaign medals. Furman returned to the United States in October 1945.

After the war Furman was discharged from the Army and enlisted in the Air Force. His assignments included Carlwell AFB, Barksdale AFB, Reese AFB, 3 years in Japan, Edwards AFB, RAF Bentwater, Ipswich, England, Amarillo AFB and Lackland AFB. He served with the Air Security Police in various capacities including Security Operations Supervisor, Corrections Security Operations Superintendent and Security Police Training Superintendent. Chief Master Sergeant Furman Davis consistently received outstanding reviews from his commanding officers and was several times rated as the “best Chief Master Sergeant in the whole United States Air Force”. Furman returned with his family to Center, Texas in 1972, where he completed a long second career as an Investigator for the Shelby Count District Attorney. Furman was a member of the First Baptist Church of Center, Texas and the Center Country Club. Furman’s interests included golf, ranching, gardening and carving.

Furman will be buried alongside his loving wife, Mary Jo, at the Newburn Cemetery in Center, Texas. A memorial service will be held for family and friends at The First Baptist Church in Center, Texas on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 2 PM. Visitation will be from 1 PM till service time at the First Baptist Church.

Funeral service for Henry B. Porterfield, 93, of Timpson, TX, will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, April 28, 2010, in Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, Timpson, with Orval Miller officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson.
Mr. Porterfield passed away Sunday, April 25, 2010, in Timpson.

Born April 17, 1917, in Timpson, TX, Henry B. Porterfield was the son of the late John Henon and Annas (Biering) Porterfield. He served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945, fighting in Normandy, Northern France, and the Rhineland. He worked in construction for the Texas Department of Transportation from February 2, 1953 to October 31, 1975.

In addition to his parents, Henry Porterfield was preceded in death by brothers Aubrey, Marvin, Herbert, Emory, Gaston, Melvin, and Daniel Porterfield and sisters Mary Hammers, Lizzie Porterfield, Jewel Ford, and Ruth Porterfield. Surviving his memory are numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Harold Rodgers, 86, of Center passed away Friday, April 23, 2010. He was born August 19, 1923 in Tecumuseh, Oklahoma to James Harold Lloyd Rodgers and Mary Daniels Rodgers. Mr. Rodgers served in the US Navy during WWII and was a member of the VFW. He was of the Baptist faith.

Visitation was held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Sunday, April 25, 2010 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services were held at 10:00 am, Monday, April 26, 2010 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Rev. Don Windham officiating. Interment followed at Short Cemetery in Shelby County.

Brandon Levi Powdrill, infant son of Michael Shane Powdrill and Laura Mayfield Powdrill passed away, Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at Willis-Knighton South Medical Center in Shreveport. Ms. Jordan was a member of First Methodist Church in Joaquin. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and had been a past Worthy Matron.

Roy Byndom, 69, of Center, passed away on April 15, 2010. He was born on November12, 1941 to Charlie and Mildred Byndom. Roy was united in holy matrimony with Ella Mae Cartwright Byndom. He was employed at E.L. Bruces for over 30 years and at Center Independent School District for seven years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mildred Byndom; a son, Kent Byndom: grandchildren, Jessica Brinson and Jermaine Brinson; and a sister, Ovada Byndom White.

Edra English, 76, of Center, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Shelby Regional Medical Center. She was born December 28, 1933 in Joaquin to German Grant and Bessie O’Rear Grant. Ms. English was a member of Heritage Missionary Baptist Church in Center.

Mr. Paul Jeanes, 61, of San Augustine County, Texas, passed from this life on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at his residence in San Augustine County, Texas.

Paul was born to Louise (Dickerson) Jeanes and K.P. Jeanes, Sr. on November 14, 1948, in San Augustine County, Texas. He was retired from the City of Houston as a Building Inspector for 19 years, and worked as a carpenter for 17 years. He was a member of the Broaddus Masonic Lodge #1112, and a member of the Harvey Creek Baptist Church in Broaddus.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. in the Harvey Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Broaddus. Interment will follow in the Hebron Cemetery in San Augustine County, Texas.

Visitation will be from the hours of 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Monday evening, April 19, 2010 at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, 316 West Columbia St., San Augustine.

Memorial service for Gilbert Rhodes, 67, of Timpson, TX, will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 24, 2010, in Taylor Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. George Patterson and Orval Miller officiating. Mr. Rhodes passed away March 15, 2010, in Garrison, TX.

Gilbert Rhodes was born in Timpson, Texas on April 13, 1942 to John W. and Marjorie Neill Rhodes. He attended the Timpson schools, graduating in 1960. During Junior High, he was a trumpet player in the band but played football in High School and was a quarterback on the 1959 district championship team. He was also an Eagle scout and served as bugler on the staff at Camp Tonkawa. After graduation, he attended Stephen F. Austin, majoring in Biology and Chemistry. He worked as a lab instructor in Human Anatomy, Embryology, and was a Parasitolgy research assistant. In 1964, he received a B.S. degree and was inducted into Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He also was a member of the Highlander Trio folk singing group at SFA which performed in many locations in East Texas.

After graduation from SFA, he attended the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston but withdrew after two years. He then worked for the Galveston City Health Department and in 1967, joined ARA Services, Inc. of Philadelphia as a hospital food services administrator. During this 18-year career he served at hospitals in Newport News, VA, Oak Ridge, TN, San Angelo, TX, New Orleans, LA, Akron, OH, Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Flint MI, and Oklahoma City, OK. In the 70’s, he also worked for Food Services International of Ft. Lauderdale, FL as a District Manager and Regional Director in St. Louis, MO. He also served briefly as Midwest Sales Director for B&C Marketing of Fullerton, CA (Hawaiian Punch) out of the St. Louis office covering 18 states. In 1989, he worked as a computer programmer for Control Data Corporation in Oklahoma City, specializing in engineering database development.

In 1990, Gilbert returned to SFA and obtained a teaching certificate in Biology/Chemistry to begin his second career. He taught in Texas at Kirbyville H.S., Paul Pewitt H.S., and in Oklahoma at Ardmore Plainview, Crescent, Ardmore, Bridge Creek, and Bethel. In 1998 he did Master’s work at the University of Oklahoma in science education. Then, in 2004, he retired and returned to Timpson where he taught one last year at Timpson High School and began restoration of the old Rhodes family farm which was settled in 1896 by his grandfather William H. and where his father was raised. In 2007/08, he served as program chairman of the Timpson Area Genealogical and Heritage Society and has enjoyed associations with the members and reunions with his friends from the THS Class of 1960.

Gilbert is survived by his wife and best friend of 23 years, Phillis Mills of Oklahoma City, a son, Michael of Silverdale, WA, daughter, Jennifer Rhodes of Fenton, MI, and two grandsons, Zack and Lucas Rhodes of Silverdale. He is also survived by his step-children, Kevin Mills of CA; David Mills, Cleveland, OH; Steve Mills, Ft. Hood, TX; Marc Mills,

Oklahoma City; Chris Mills, Austin, TX; Matt Mills, Oklahoma City; and Buffy Oxley of Blanchard, OK, with several step-grandchildren including Jordan, Jasmine, and Lexy Mills of Oklahoma City. Michael Rhodes is retired U.S. Navy having served on the nuclear attack submarines USS Memphis and USS Bremerton and the nuclear ballistic missle submarine USS Alaska. He now works for the Navy as a training contractor at the Bangor Sub Base in Washington state. Jennifer is a DNA analyst working for a private lab in Michigan. He is also survived by several cousins, including Beth Neel Joyce of Richardson, TX, Bette Wallia Brown of Henderson, TX, Charles Rhodes and J.T. Rhodes, both of Timpson. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Neill Rhodes, who was also a SFA graduate and a CPA in Tyler, TX, before his death in 1993.

Ashigbe and the staff of the Oncology Center at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler for their care and professional treatment during his battle against pancreatic cancer. Walter Benjamin "Ben" Felts, 82 of Huxley, Texas, passed away at his daughter's home on April 9, 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry & Clara (White) Felts. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rebecca Felts; sons, Ben Felts & his wife Margaret and David Felts & his wife Susan; daughter, Connie O'Day & her husband Mike; seven grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Ben was born on September 20, 1927 in Prescott, Arkansas. He attended Toledo Bend Baptist Church pastored by Brother Jack Forbis. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and built a career owning and operating Ben Felts Utility Company. "Mr. Ben" was a man of great faith who was loved by all who knew him. His greatest joys were his family, friends, fishing, and hunting.

A Memorial Service for Ben will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Toledo Bend Baptist Church, 2543 FM 3172, Shelbyville, Texas 75973. Amelia Smith Jeanes, age 63, entered into rest on April 9, 2010, following a tragic automobile accident. She was born in San Augustine on October 7, 1946, to Geraldine (Epps) and the late Robert Wayne "Buster" Smith. 

Mrs. Jeanes served her community in many ways. She was the City Secretary and the local Registrar. Later she served her church as the secretary there. She was a member of the Liberty Hill Baptist Church in San Augustine. Also she helped the community as a member of the Womens Service League. She enjoyed many hours of fellowship as a member of the Red Hat Club.

She is survived by her husband Larry Jeanes of San Augustine; daughter Anissa Smith and husband Scott of San Augustine; granddaughter Erica Adams of San Augustine; mother Geraldine Smith of San Augustine; sisters Sharon Mathews and husband John of San Augustine and Beth Boudoin and husband Myron of Lake Arthur, Louisiana; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father Robert Wayne "Buster" Smith.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 12, First Baptist Church of San Augustine with Rev. Frank Holrath officiating. Burial will follow in the Thomas Cemetery. Life came to a close for Mrs. Gladys Tanner LaFedge on Monday, April 5, 2010, at Twin Lakes Care Center in San Augustine, Texas. Born in San Augustine County on December 21, 1927, to the late Jerry and Sadie Ligion Tanner, she married Nalton LaFedge on April 25, 1959.

She was in a family of 12 children of which Ella Tanner Porter, Farris,Hughie, Elzie, J.T. Phil, Cleo, Herman, Henry Tanner, Katie L. Tanner Wade and Maggie Tanner Clark all preceded her in death. She was a member of Sunset Church of Christ. In her working years, she worked at Holly Farms, San Augustine Lumber Company and San Augustine Public Library. She was well spoken and an outgoing person with a lot of love and always thinking of other. Gladys was the loving mother of five children of which two preceded her in death, Ray Neal Garrett and Leola LaFedge Jones.

She retired from SAISD as a cafeteria cook. She attended Mt. Horeb Baptist Church in San Augustine County.

Graveside services for Mrs. Irene Ramsey Cammack, age 97, of Carthage, TX, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2010, at Shady Grove Cemetery near Timpson, TX with Rev. Mervin Scott, Rev. James Edwards, and Rev. Wade Harmon officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Cammack passed away on Tuesday morning, April 13, 2010, in Carthage. Irene Ramsey Cammack was born on Feb. 28, 1913, in the Shady Grove Community near Timpson, TX to Charles Ed and Pinkie Childs Ramsey. She attended Shady Grove School and graduated from Timpson High School. Following graduation, she attended Lon Morris College and S.F.A. where she earned her teaching certificate. Mrs. Cammack married R.L. Cammack on Dec. 3, 1936, in Timpson. She taught at the Pine Hill School which was later consolidated into Garrison. After her second child was born, Mrs. Cammack retired from teaching, devoting her time to her family. She and her family moved to the Riderville Community of Panola County in 1952, from Timpson. In 1958, she established The Snowflake Bakery in Carthage. Mrs. Cammack was a member of Pisgah U.M.C. where she was also a member of the U.M.W and taught Sunday school for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Edna Franks; and her husband who passed away on Feb. 18, 1984.

Mrs. Cammack is survived by two sons, Charles L. Cammack and wife Jane of Beckville and George M. Cammack and wife Loretta of Nacogdoches; two daughters, Joyce Ann Allums and husband Bruce of Carthage and Bobbie Woods and husband James of Beckville; nine grandchildren, Chris Cammack and wife Phyllis of Beckville, Pennie Ratley and husband Chuck of Carthage, Cheryl Simmons and husband Danny of Texarkana, Michael Cammack and wife Andrea of Houston, Eric Allums and wife Tricia of Nacogdoches, Janna Richardson and husband Delta of Carthage, Gae-Lynn Woods Popey and husband Martyn of Gary, Jerry Woods and wife Kimberly of Dallas, and Terry Woods and wife Traci of Henderson; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Billy Joe Gibbs, Sr., 74 of Carthage, passed away April 5, 2010 in Tyler, Texas. He was born July 19, 1935 in the Murvaul Community of Panola County, Texas. He was one of eight children born to the marriage of George Kenneth and Lilly Ester Taylor Gibbs. He was raised and schooled in Gary, Texas. He married Patricia Ann Lewis in 1961 and together they celebrated almost 50 years together before she preceded him in death in 2009. Billy Joe spent his career working in the Construction Industry as a mechanical contractor. He was a member of the Highway Tabernacle in Timpson, Texas. Mr. Gibbs loved spending time with family, listening and playing music as an accomplished piano player. He is also preceded in death by his siblings, Montez Adams, Gene O’Brian Gibbs, Larry Leon Gibbs and Kenneth Gibbs, son; Jeffry Lynn Gibbs, grandsons; Johnathan A. Gibbs and Joseph Warren Cannon.

Guy G. Crawford, loving father to Greg and Margaret, passed away peacefully at 90 years of age Friday, April 2, 2010.
Funeral: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: 2 p.m. Thursday in Fairview Cemetery in Center. Visitation: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Funeral Home.

Guy was born Oct. 31, 1919, in Center. He graduated from Texas A&M University. During World War II, Guy served in the Pacific for the U.S. Army, where he met the love of his life, Patricia Dobrigh Crawford, to whom he was married for more than 50 years.

Guy founded Service Engineers, a company specializing in plastic bottles for pharmaceuticals, which later became Dougherty Bros.
Guy also graduated from Harvard Business School and was a longtime member of Colonial Country Club.
Survivors: Daughter, Margaret Crawford; and son, Greg Crawford, both of Fort Worth.

Graveside service for Addie Mae (Windham) Whiteside, 87, of Longview, TX, will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, April 03, 2010, in Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson, TX. Mrs. Whiteside passed away Friday, April 02, 2010, in Longview.

Born January 22, 1923, in Timpson, TX, Addie Mae Whiteside was the daughter of the late Derious Marion and Jessie (Jones) Windham. She and Rudolph Whiteside were married April 2, 1938. Mrs. Whiteside was a homemaker and member of Caledonia Methodist Church.

Survivors include 3 sons: Kenneth Whiteside and wife Joann of Timpson, Bo Whiteside of Gary, TX, and James Whiteside and wife Teresa of Longview; 2 daughters: Patricia Bright of White Oak, TX, and Betty Shields and husband Norm of Longview; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and sister Jimmie Lea of Pasadena, TX. 
In addition to her parents, Addie Mae Whiteside was preceded in death by her husband Rudolph Whiteside, son Stephen Russell Whiteside, 2 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and 2 brothers Walter and Vertis Windham.

Nancy Hartt Williams, age 62, of Johnson City, TN was welcomed into Heaven on Monday, March 22, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a native of Timpson, Texas and a 1965 graduate of Timpson High School. She had lived in Johnson City for the past twenty-eight years. Mrs. Williams was a daughter of the late Hubbard "Sonny" Hartt and Mary Jo "Skeeter" Compton Hartt. She was know as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Williams is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Glenn A Williams of Johnson City, one daughter and son-in-law Jennifer Street and husband Ronnie of Gray, TN; one son and daughter-in-law Ronald Williams and wife Ashlee of Butler, TN; three grandsons; Austin Lee Street, Aaron Patrick Phelp and Adam Fischer Williams; two granddaughters; Ashley Rose Street and Alyssa Deann Williams; three brothers; Hubbard Lynn Hartt, Jr. of Center, Texas. Glynn A Hartt of Nacogdoches, Texas and Robert C Hartt of Garrison, Texas; one sister; Tammy Sue Dutton of Whitesboro, Texas. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The graveside service and interment was conducted Friday, March 26 at Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City. Funeral service for Donald Gordon Tomlinson, 65, of Timpson, TX, will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 3, 2010, at Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, Timpson, with Rev. Josh Walters officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson. Mr. Tomlinson passed away April 1, 2010, in Timpson.

Born July 10, 1944, in Philadelphia, PA, Don Tomlinson was the son of the late Roy and Rose Tomlinson. He was a truck driver and served in the U.S. Navy. Don also was a volunteer for the Timpson Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Survivors include his daughter Tracy Lee and husband William “Bubba” Lee of Timpson; son Donald Hutter of New Jersey; 2 grandsons: Tommy Lee and Chris Lee; and 6 great grandchildren: Chase, Kristen, Angel, Kaylin, Dixie, and Dakota Lee.

D.C. McSwain, 86, of Center, passed away April 1, 2010 at Shelby Regional Medical Center. He was born November 1, 1923 in Center to Amos Parker McSwain and Martha Dale Andrews McSwain. Mr. McSwain was a member of First United Methodist Church in Center. He served in the Navy as a member of the Seabees.

Alma Dora Evett Wise, 90, of San Augustine County, Texas, passed from this life, on Tuesday evening, March 30, 2010, in San Augustine County, Texas. 

Alma was born to Jessie Mae (Murphy) Evett and William Benjamin Evett on January 11, 1920, in San Aguustine County, Texas. She was a homemaker, and loved working in her yard, and gardens and was loved by all who knew her. She was a member of the Attoyac Missionary Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be Thursday, April 1, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. at the Attoyac Missionary Baptist Church, with Bro. Bobby Wadsworth officiating. Interment will follow in the Attoyac Cemetery. Her survivors include: Brother: Levi Evett of San Augustine; along with 14 special nieces and nephews.
