Morgan Harris, age 76, lifelong resident of Center, passed away peacefully Saturday, October 29, 2011 at his residence under the care of Hearts Way Hospice of North East Texas.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Chris Welch and Bro. Ozay Ford officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, October 31, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was born November 3, 1934 to Levi Morgan Harris, Sr and Iva Dell (Samford) Harris. He was a member of the St. Marks Methodist Church where he led the music for many years. He graduated from the University of Texas and he served in the US Army for 2 years in Germany. He loved his lord, family and his church family, traveling, reading and tending to his cattle. He served on the Center ISD School Board, he was a member of the Sam Samford Lodge #149 where he was the worshipful master and received his 32nd Degree and he was a Shriner. He was also a member of the Texas Cattleman’s Association.

He is preceded in death by his Parents, Levi Morgan Harris, Sr and Iva Dell (Samford) Harris,
Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Jack and Beulah Carroll and Brother-in-law, William Carroll.

Dowell D. Youngblood, 81, of Center, passed away Friday, October 28, 2011 in Center. He was born in Shelby County on February 9, 1930 to Arthur Dee Youngblood and Cora McKenzie Youngblood. Mr. Youngblood served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University where he received his teaching degree. Mr. Youngblood was retired from the public school system. He most recently served as docent and genealogical researcher at the Shelby County Museum and Genealogical Library. Mr. Youngblood was a member of the Hurst Street Church of Christ in Center. He was a member of the Captain Jesse Amason Camp #282 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8904 in Center.

Visitation will be held from 4:00pm – 6:00pm on Sunday, October 30, 2011 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, October 31, 2011 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Tim Perkins officiating. Graveside services will be held at Mt. Herman Cemetery in Shelby County under the direction of Center VFW Post #8904.

O.L. Prothro, 69, of Joaquin, passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at his residence. He was born in Natchitoches, Louisiana on November 16, 1941 to Otha Prothro Sr. and Olline Conn Prothro. Mr. Prothro served in the United States Air Force. He was a member of Berean Baptist Church in Keithville, Louisiana and a member of the Carpenter’s Union.

Visitation will be held from 6:00pm – 8:00pm on Friday, October 28, 2011 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Jody Hooper officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park.

James H. “Butch” Bridwell, 70, of Georgetown, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2011. He was born on January 10, 1941 to L.H. and Ruth Haley Bridwell in Joaquin. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Butch was an MP in the US Army in the early 1960’s. He was Administrator for Holiday Nursing Home in the 70’s and a nursing home owner and consultant until the mid 1990’s.

Christopher Reagan Smith, Jr., 20, of Shelbyville formerly of High Island, died October 19, 2011, at his residence.

He was born February 26, 1991, in Beaumont.  Reagan was the son of Christopher Reagan Smith, Sr., and Vicky Miller Dean. He was a construction worker.

Reagan is survived by his son, Maxxen Smith of Winnie; father, Chris Smith and his wife, Terra of High Island; brothers, Christian Andres of High Island, Raven Dean of Shelbyville and Shelby Wallace of Corsicana; sister, Alexia Smith of High Island; grandparents, Donald Smith and Patricia Smith of Vidor, and Cecelia Raffield of Sulphur, Louisiana; cousin, Ethan; uncles, Rick and Robert; and numerous relatives and friends.

Vicky Lynn Dean, 37, of Shelbyville, died October 19, 2011, at her residence.

Born December 31, 1973, in Jennings, Louisiana, and resident of Shelbyville for fourteen years, Vicky was the daughter of Willia Mae Johnson and Wilbert Miller.

Vicky is survived by her father, Wilbert Miller and step-mother, Debra of Sulphur, Louisiana; sons, Shelby Wallace of Corsicana and Raven Dean of Shelbyville; daughter, Lexi Smith of High Island; brother, Gary Miller of Beaumont; sister, Peggy Krummel and her husband, Robert of Orange; step-brother, Terry Swier and his wife, Christi; and step-sister, Traci Bergeron and her husband, Dave all of Sulphur.

Mrs. Harris passed away Saturday, October 22, 2011 in Tyler.

She was born October 7, 1922 in Paris, Illinois.

Mrs. Harris was a member of First Baptist Church, Jacksonville and was a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by her husband Rev. A. L. Harris, parents John and Lena Mae Denham, brother and sister-in-law Richard and Norma Denham and sister Margaret Dyer.

Survivors include sons Ed Harris and wife Deanna of Rockford, IA and Robert Harris and wife Linda of Lufkin, TX; daughter Teresa Pollard and husband Farrel of Jacksonville; brothers Clyde Denham and wife Georgeann of Florida, Bill Denham of Evansville, IN and Charles Denham of Clinton, IN; sister Mary Jane Barton and husband Bob of West Terre Haute, IN; brother-in-law Eddy Dyer of New Goshen, IN; four grandchildren Christie Brewer and husband Carl of Baton Rouge, LA, Mark Harris and wife Meredeth of Dallas, Jonathan Pollard and wife Julie of Flint and Jared Pollard of The Woodlands; and four great-grandchildren Dylan Brewer and Jake Brewer of Baton Rouge, LA and Brady Pollard and Barrett Pollard of Flint.

Mangum Funeral Home announces the death of Mrs. Wanita Lawrence, age 87, of Center, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at Pine Grove Nursing Home.

A Memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday October 29, 2011 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She was born January 1, 1924 in Marshall, Texas. She was a telephone operator for many years and she and her husband Milton Lawrence owned and operated the Rug Doctor and cleaned many businesses around Shelby County. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall.

Mildred P. Harris, 92 was born December 23, 1918 in Henderson, TX to Daniel and Kizzie Pollard and passed away to October 22, 2011 in Beaumont. She lived in Logansport, LA prior to relocating in Beaumont about 18 years ago.

Funeral services will take place Thursday, October 27 at 10am at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home with Pastor Lloy Betar of Forest Park United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30pm at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Center, TX. A gathering of friends and family will be on Wednesday at the funeral home from 6:00 - 8:00pm.

Mrs. Harris is survived by her sons; Cleon B. Harris and wife, Carolyn of Broussard, LA, Eddie W. Harris and wife, Cynthia of Beaumont, TX; daughter, Linda K. Loudon of Austin, TX; 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, 1 brother and numerous nieces and nephews. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Harris, 4 brothers, 4 sisters and 1 grandson.


Dorothy Ellen Dykes Wilson, 58, of South Houston, passed away on Monday, October 24, 2011 in Joaquin. She was born in Porterville, California on September 21, 1953 to Neil Dykes and Maxine McCutcheon Dykes. Dorothy was her happiest when she was in the wind on her motorcycle. She leaves behind many brothers and sisters in the biker world that she loved dearly. Her family and friends meant the world to her. She was a very unique person and a friend to many. Dorothy was one of the original ten members of the Annual USMC Toys for Tots Toy Run held in Pasadena. This year will be the eighteenth anniversary of this event.

There will be a memorial service held in the Houston area at a later date.

Jack Bell, 89, of Center, passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at Holiday Nursing Center. He was born in Dallas on January 5, 1922 to Daniel Bell and Lilliam Elsie William Bell. Mr. Bell served in the United States Navy. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Center Noon Lions Club and VFW Post 8904. He was a past President and Board Director of the Texas Association of Broadcasters. Mr. Bell was a recipient of the Pioneer Broadcasters Awards.

She was born January 1, 1924 in Marshall, Texas. She was a telephone operator for many years and she and her husband Milton Lawrence owned and operated the Rug Doctor and cleaned many businesses around Shelby County. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall.

Allen Francis Tribble, Jr was born January 14, 1948 to Marie Rogers Tribble and Allen Francis Tribble. Allen graduated from Center High School and Stephen F. Austin State university. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Allen Tribble. After a courageous battle with cancer beginning in 2003, Allen died peacefully on October 15, 2011 at Grace Home in Shreveport, LA. "Al" is survived by his aunt, Virginia Rogers of Tyler, Texas and a host of cousin and friends.

There will be a memorial service at 4pm Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at JOI Ranch with a memorial reception to follow.

Funeral services for Mrs. Myrna Smith Hook, age 87, of Carthage, TX, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. William Everett officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Hook passed away on Saturday night, Oct. 15, 2011, in Carthage. Mrs. Smith passed away October 15, 2011.

Myrna Irene Smith Hook was born on Jan. 5, 1924, in Moorhead, Mississippi to Robert Edward Smith, Sr. and Vera Irene Lee Smith. She graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1940. Mrs. Hook attended Dodd College in Shreveport and earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Music from Baylor University. She married William Edward “Bill” Hook on Oct. 26, 1945, in Carthage and he preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 1999. Mrs. Hook taught music in Kilgore, Sweeney, and Round Rock before moving to Carthage where she taught in the Music Department at Panola College for 30 years until her retirement. She taught piano lessons at her home to countless students throughout the years. She was an accomplished pianist and organist and her love for music allowed her many opportunities to play at different venues around the county including the Silvertones, Panola College plays, musicals, and choir performances, Sunday school, weddings, funerals, and the Miss Panola County Pageant, just to name a few. She was a member of the Carthage Book Forum, the Carthage Music Club, and Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher’s Sorority. She moved to Carthage in 1952, from Round Rock and was a member of the Central Baptist Church where she played the organ for many years, was a member of the Faith Sunday School Class, and served as interim music director for a short period of time. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Edward Smith, Jr.

Mrs. Hook is survived by two sons, Scott Hook and wife Linda of Carthage and Brian Hook and wife Sandy of Center; one daughter, Kristi Koonce and husband Keith of White Oak; six grandchildren, Jennifer Hook Showers and husband James, Justin Hook, Matt Hook, Clayton Koonce, Travis Koonce and wife Kasie, and Kristin Koonce.

Serving as pallbearers are Justin Hook, Matt Hook, Clayton Koonce, Travis Koonce, and James Showers. Serving as an honorary pallbearer is Ted Anderson.

He loved to ride dirt roads, swim in the lake and was an avid hunter.

James Eugene "Midget" Brittain, 54, of Douglass, Texas, passed away October 8, 2011, at a Nacogdoches hospital with his loving family by his side.

He was born August 19, 1957 in Center, Texas, to parents Mary Murphy and JC Brittain.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Murphy; father, JC Brittain; and sister, Phyllis (P.J.) Cortines.

James is survived by loving wife of 33 years, Carol Brittain of Douglass; son, Corey Brittain and wife Shellie of Douglass; daughter, Summer Brittain of Douglass; son, James (J.C.) He was born April 6, 1940 in San Antonio, Texas to Parents, Chester Arthur Taylor and Ema Rebecca (Hatton) Taylor. He worked for Local 450 where he was a heavy equipment operator for many years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ches and Ema Taylor and one sister, Delores Flatt.

Albert Redler Jr., 76, of Joaquin, TX went to watch over his family in heaven on October 4, 2011. He was born in New Orleans, LA on June 24th to Albert and Marion Redler.He fought a courageous battle against cancer.

He was a proud Veteran of the United State's Air Force and spent his career life working in Houston as an engineer. He retired to Joaquin where he enjoyed spending time on his farm and with his family.

Services will be held on October 12, 2011 at the Veterans Cemetary in Keithville Louisiana at 11:00 am.

James F. Ramsey, 68, of Joaquin passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Promise Hospital in Bossier City, Louisiana. He was born on February 19, 1943 in Timpson, Texas to J.P. Ramsey and Era Richards Ramsey. James enlisted in the United States Army in 1966. He completed basic training in Leesville, Louisiana and San Antonio, Texas. He was later deployed to Thailand and was honorably discharged in 1968. James was retired from Tyson Poultry, where he worked as a diesel mechanic for several years. James enjoyed picking and singing at different events, but most of all at his church. He also enjoyed being out in the woods hunting. He was a Christian and a member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church in Joaquin.

Visitation will be held from 12:00pm to 1:30pm on Friday, October 7, 2011 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, October 7, 2011 at Lone Cedar Cemetery in Joaquin with Bro. Larry Andrews officiating.

Funeral services for Garland Sanders Burrows, 89, of Center, will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, October 8, 2011, at the First Baptist Church, Center, with Rev. Michael Hale officiating, assisted by Rev. John Bender and Rev. Carl Smith. She will be buried at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 7, 2011 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home.

Mrs. Burrows was born on December 10, 1921 in Geneva, Texas to the late Dan Sanders, and Berta Sanders Gillis; and died on October 5, 2011 at HomePlace Hospice Hospital, a division of Hospice of East Texas.

Mrs. Burrows is a Retired Homemaker, who had a Catering Business for many years. Customers well remember the delicious Wedding and Birthday Cakes throughout the years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Center, having taught 4th grade girls Sunday School for numerous years, and was active in the Baptist Womens Missionary Union. Mrs. Burrows served in the Center High School Band Boosters Club when her daughter was in high school and worked as an Assistant Den Mother when her sons were in Cub Scouts. In retirement Mrs. Burrows and her husband Barfield were active members of the Shelby County Historic Society. For many years she and Barfield sold tickets to the carnival for the Shelby County Poultry Festival. Their spot at the ticket booth has been missed.

Mrs. Burrows’ first goal in life was that her children became believers in The Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior. Her second goal was that her children all graduate from college.

Mrs. Burrows enjoyed gardening and sharing vegetables with all her friends. She was an avid seamstress all her life.

For the past 27 months she has been living at Reunion Plaza, Tyler, Texas, where she was loved by all the residents there. Her favorite activity was playing dominoes, which she enjoyed all of her life.

Mrs. Burrows is survived by a Daughter, Anita Burrows Rawls and husband Prince of Sherman, TX; sons, Danny Burrows and wife Carletta of Kilgore, TX, and Thomas Burrows and wife Terri of Coppell, TX; Grandchildren, Tammie Rawls Wolff of Tyler, TX, Jason Burrows of Seattle WA, Carmen Burrows Bierschwale of Junction, TX, Jeremiah Burrows of Tucson, AZ, Ryan Barton of Coppell, TX; Great-Grandchildren, Dillon Wolff of Tyler, TX; Jade, Brock & Koda Bierschwale of Junction, TX.

John Dean Windham, 74, of Bossier City, Louisiana, formerly of Center, passed away on October 5, 2011 at his residence. He was born on December 25, 1936 in Center, Texas to John Desmond Windham and Maude Mahan Windham. Mr. Windham served his country as a Captain in the United States Army and later served his community as Mayor of the City of Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at the First Christian Church in Center with Rev. Aubie McSwain and Rev. Howard Cloudy officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

James Paul Dockens, 81, of Joaquin, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2011 in Center. He was born in the Aiken community of Shelby County on April 20, 1930 to Arlie Dockens and Ressie Grant Dockens. Mr. Dockens was an avid trail rider and a member of the Sam Houston Mounted Quadrille. He was a member of Logansport Missionary Baptist Church in Logansport, Louisiana.

Linda Lee Stark Smith, 79, Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on August 20, 2011 at 4:49 p.m. at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. Linda was born on November 24, 1931 in Huntington, West Virginia to Stanley and Ann Stark. She grew up in Russell, Kentucky with her parents and two siblings, Stan and Chloe Ann. Linda attended grade school and high school in her home town and later business school. She married George H. Stephenson and they had two sons Gregory and Jeffrey Stephenson. Linda worked many jobs, including switchboard operator and Welcome Wagon hostess. She had a beautiful voice and sang in the church choir. Linda moved to Indiana and was re-married to James T. Smith. She and Jim moved from Indianapolis to Shelbyville, Texas where they built, and for many years ran Smith's Acres, a general store with a small fish camp.

They enjoyed visits from their children and their families, Jeff and Greg as well as Jim's three children, Jenny, Sandy, and James. Linda also enjoyed working for the Sheriff's Office as a receptionist and they loved their small country church. After Jim died, Linda stayed a bit longer in Texas, and then moved back to Indiana. She lived with her son Jeff for awhile before moving into AHEPA apartments where she lived for a few years, before moving to Autumn Glen. Linda is survived by two step daughters, Jennie Troxell (Kermitt) of Markleville, Indiana and Sandy Crail (Roger) of Pendleton, Indiana. One step-son, James T. Smith, Jr. (Patsy) of Ava, Mo. Two sons, Greg Stephenson of Indianapolis, Indiana and Jeff Stephenson (Debbie) of Indianapolis, Indiana. She simply loved the fact that she had fourteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her brother Stan Stark (Clare) of Ironton, Ohio and her little dog Dollie.

Linda is predeceased by husband James Smith, sister Chloe Ann Stark Hollinger and parents Stanley and Ann Stark.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 26, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Autumn Glen Assisted Living Facility/Community Room 2250 Harvest Moon Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46229. The service will be officiated by Senior Pastor of North Eastwood Christian Church, Michael Percifield and Joe Hammond with Oakley-Hammond Funeral Home, both of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Following the service will be visitation with family to complete the "Celebration of Life" cake and punch will be served. Memorial donation suggestion: Autumn Glen Activity Fund. Linda would be thrilled to know that you donated your love to the Activity Fund. Linda loved their partys, outings and fun times together and would be happy to know her friends have been brought joy, through your donation.

Our family would like to thank Autumn Glen Assisted Living Community for all of their love and support while Linda made her home there. Memorial Service for Linda S. Smith will be held Friday, October 7, 2011. The funeral procession will begin at 1:00 pm in the parking lot of the Shelby County Sheriff Office in Center, with graveside memorial service at Wimberly Cemetery, Huxley, with Bro. Gordon Vaughn officiating.
