A funeral service for Mrs. Jimmie F. Foster Bowlin, 73, of Carthage, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Calvin Hancock and Bro. Scott Reeves officiating. Interment will follow in Timpson Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Bowlin passed away on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 30, 2014, in Carthage.
Jimmie F. Foster Bowlin was born on Apr. 5, 1941, in Joaquin, to the late William Emmitt “W.E.” Foster and Essie Lee Lilly Foster. She graduated from Joaquin High School with the class of 1959. Mrs. Bowlin worked at the First State Bank in Carthage for over 37 years. She was a poet, artist, seamstress, loved music, and was the best cook in the world. She enjoyed doing things for others and especially sending cards to people during times of loss, sickness, and celebration. She was a long-time member of the Timpson Missionary Baptist Church. She moved to Carthage from Timpson in 1971, and more recently joined the Trinity Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Bobbie Foster and a dear friend, Wanda Stewart Davidson.

Harold Faulk, 77, of Joaquin, passed away Monday, December 29, 2014 in Shreveport.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Jody Hooper and Bro. Jack Forbis officiating. Mr. Faulk was born October 21, 1937 in Center to Raymond K. “Pat” Faulk and Lucille Mayes Faulk. He was retired from USDA and was a member of First Baptist Church in Haslam.

Alice Joy Ellington Weaver passed away at her home in Center, Texas on December 29, 2014, at the age of 95, surrounded by her daughter, grandson and longtime employee.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 2, 2015 at Watson & Sons Chapel. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Center.
Joy Weaver was born on May 6, 1919, in Patroon, Texas to loving parents, Dr. John Henry Ellington and Verna Laura Bell Ellington. She was raised in San Augustine, Texas where her father was a respected physician in private practice. Dr. Ellington was also the doctor for the Santa Fe Railroad which gave Joy the opportunity for great travels during her youth with her parents across the country by rail.
She attended school in San Augustine and attended Texas Women's University in Denton and Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches before transferring to the University of Texas in Austin as a sophomore. At Texas she pledged Chi Omega sorority and was elected a “Bluebonnet Bell Beauty”. It was at UT that she met the person who quickly became her best friend and then the love of her life, Martin Weaver, from Center, Texas--a mere 20 miles from her hometown.
Joy married Martin on Wednesday, October 29, 1941, as Wednesday was her lucky day. Seven years later they were blessed by the birth of their only child, Joy Ann Weaver Havran, who was their pride and joy.
Joy Weaver was a pillar of the East Texas community enhancing the lives of those with whom she came in contact. She was the epitome of a charming and genteel Southern lady with a will of iron, impeccable manners, incredible wisdom and a gentle spirit. She was the “rock” of her family, handling every situation with amazing grace and utmost dignity and integrity. A woman of unwavering faith, even under extreme adversity, a woman who never complained and was always unselfish, putting others before her, Joy Weaver was a role model to all who knew her.
She was a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi and was involved in every aspect of the Center schools while her daughter was a student, including being a room mother for almost every grade level and a chaperone on the weekends at the Center Youth Center. An active member of First Christian Church, she taught Vacation Bible School and made funnel cakes at their booth at the Poultry Festival until a few years before her death. Joy also enjoyed golf, horseback riding and fishing with her beloved husband.
Her family was truly her life. She was a devoted wife to Martin, helping him establish his business, Weaver Brothers Lumber Company, and even holding a light as a newlywed while he loaded lumber to ship to market. She was truly the wind beneath his wings and always supported his business. When Martin was drafted into World War II, she followed him to Fort Benning in Georgia and to Camp Roberts in Paso Robles, California, taking an apartment nearby to be with him. When he was sent to Japan, she lived in Dallas, Texas, with another “army wife” and worked at Neiman Marcus-Downtown. Here she was employed in the toy department and sold the featured Christmas catalogue item -- a life-size playhouse.
After the war, Joy and Martin returned to Center and Weaver Brothers and were instrumental in establishing the poultry industry and promoting tourism for Toledo Bend. Always the consummate hostess, Joy entertained scores of sportswriters and potential investors to introduce them to Shelby County.
Throughout her life, she never missed a function in which her daughter, Joy Ann, or the lights of her life, her grandsons Barrett and Blake, participated. From baton twirling contests across Texas and Fort Worth events for Joy Ann to plays and junior high and high school sports for her two grandsons, Barrett and Blake, to Barrett's University of Texas and Blake's Baylor University Track and Field Meets, respectively, throughout the Big 12 Conference, Joy was always there.
She was their biggest cheerleader, best friend, wise confidant and “go to person.” Leaving a great legacy of love, Alice Joy Ellington Weaver will be missed by her family and scores of friends who thank her for wonderful memories and unconditional love.
She is survived by her daughter, Joy Ann Weaver Havran, son-in-law Bob Havran, grandson Blake Weaver Havran, brother-in-law Malcolm Weaver, nieces and nephews Mark Weaver and wife Mary Jean, Mary Weaver Crain and husband Tom, great nieces and nephews Allison Brickley and husband Brandon, Shannon and Trey Crain, Travis, Meagan, and John Mark Weaver, special great great niece, her namesake, baby “Joy” Brickley, longtime employee Dollie Richards Davis, family and friends. Her husband Martin, who passed away in June of 1982, her parents Verna and Dr. John Henry Ellington and her grandson Barrett Martin Havran, preceded her in death.
Pallbearers will be Mike Bird Sr., George Bradford, Sammy Dance, Neilson Davis, Randy McLeroy, Murray Mathews, Mike Middleton, Luke Motley III, and Frank Parker. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ricky Andrews, Burton Brown, James Campbell, Rick Campbell, David Chadwick, Billy Jack Corbell, Gail Cuculic, Deck Jones, Ray Jones, Billy Bob McAdams, Don Walker and Mike Walker.

Jean Hughes, 81, of Nacogdoches, formerly of Shelby County, passed away Friday, December 26, 2014 in Nacogdoches.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 29, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with Bro. Don Windham officiating. Interment will follow at Sardis Cemetery in Center. A visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 noon.
Ms. Hughes was born September 17, 1933 in Henderson to Marion T. Sullivan and Clara Hunt Sullivan. Her hobbies included camping, traveling to new places, working puzzles, fishing and cooking. Ms. Hughes loved animals and especially enjoyed time spent with her family. She was of the Baptist faith.

Joe Loyd Powdrill, 71, passed away Friday, December 26, 2014, at his home in the Silas Community, Timpson, TX, with family around him. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, December 27, 2014, at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Timpson, with Rev. Cliff Hughes officiating.
Joe Loyd Powdrill was born May 30, 1943, in the Stockman Community, Shelby County, Texas. Joe spent delightful years in spite of challenges and difficulties. After the passing of his parents, Joe was taken into the Schulz family. Mama Sue took special care of Joe. Thanks to LifeCare Hospice for loving care with Joe’s terrible bout with brain cancer. Words cannot express thanks to the Schulz family.
Joe was preceeded in death by parents Vernon and Era Powdrill, who lived in the Stockman Community, and sister Jennabeth Smyth of Lake Charles, LA.
Left to cherish his memory are sister Joy Bonner and husband Robert of Many, LA (Toledo Bend); niece Becky Day and husband Bill of Houston, TX; nephew Reggie Bonner and wife Barbara of Scotsboro, Alabama, and their adult children and grandchildren; the Schulz family; and many friends that helped to make Joe’s life delightful.

Mr. Jimmie Noble, age 79, of Milam, Texas. Mr. Noble passed away Thursday, December 18, 2014 at his home in Milam, Texas.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church with interment to follow at Buckley Cemetery with Rev. Drayton Garner, officiating.

Mr. Lilly was born May 25, 1931 in Tenaha to Jake Lilly and Lottie Hooper Lilly. He served in the United States Army. He was a member of Jackson Missionary Baptist Church in Joaquin where he served as teacher of the Open Door Sunday School Class. Mr. Lilly had served as Minister of Music for over 20 years at Liberty Baptist Church and Rose Park Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Rev. Bobby Strange, 79, of Nacogdoches and born and raised in Timpson passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Nacogdoches Memorial Center.

Melva Darland “Mickie” Boyett Gibbs, 69, of the Deadwood Community of Panola County, passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2014 in Longview.

Marjorie Neal Hooks, known as “Margie”, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2014, at the age of 94.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 20, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with Bro. Gordon Vaughn officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time.
Margie was born to Norman and Cassie Oliver Neal on January 10, 1920, in Patroon, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Jean Owens, and her husband, Bernard Hooks.
Margie focused her early adult years on rearing her two daughters; June Lynn Askew Steiner and Montie Askew Jones. Her world revolved around her daughters; they were the joy of her life. Later, when her children were grown, she began her dream career in the jewelry and fashion world. Her first job in the 50’s was working for Travis Price, a well-known Center jeweler, as his store manager and purchasing agent. Mr. Price depended heavily on Margie’s gift to recognize fine jewelry and her ability to make the appropriate purchases for Price Jewelry Store on the East side of the Center Square. In the early 1960’s, Margie and her husband, Bernard Hooks, purchased the business from Mr. Price and renamed the store Bernard’s Jewelry. The business thrived under Margie’s experience, good taste in fine jewelry, gifts, and exemplary customer service and Bernard’s expertise in watch and jewelry repairs.
In the 1970’s, June and Montie opened an apparel shop in Center, and they persuaded their Mother to join them in the business. She dearly loved working in the fashion industry, as she had always been a fashion maven, and was always dressed in great style. Margie became store manager when the second location of Just For Her was opened in Nacogdoches, Texas. She drove from her home in Center to Nacogdoches, daily. Margie enjoyed seeing her friends and loved meeting new ones as they dropped in to shop. She has now joined her dear friend, Helen Bell, in heaven, who faithfully worked by her side for many years.
Margie always wanted everyone to know how blessed she was to have two wonderful sons-in-law, Al Steiner and Deck Jones. She went out of her way to cater to her handsome sons-in-law, as she frequently referred to them. She was very proud of their business success and of their devotion to their families. She also loved being a grandmother. Although she always felt she was too young to be called Granny, she loved being their “Margie Honey”, as she was lovingly called by them. “Margie Honey” showered her granddaughters, Monette Wagnon Stockton, GiGi Jordan Steiner, Alison Neal McIntosh, and Ashley Elizabeth Steiner with love, books, gifts and her treasured possessions. When Charlie Jones came into her life as her only grandson, they instantly bonded and enjoyed many special times and warm conversations.
“Granny-Great” as she was known by her great-grandchildren; Sarah Klein, Robert McIntosh, Elton McIntosh, and Cassie Anna McIntosh, were a late in life pleasure to her. She was always interested in their accomplishments and interests, as they grew through the years. She was quick to brag on them to others and always waited eagerly for their visits to embrace them with open arms and special treats.
Nieces, Barbara Palmer and Sandra Tye of Mineral Wells, Texas, are also left behind with many fond memories of family holidays and gatherings spend with their Aunt Margie.
Without a doubt, anyone who knew Margie was aware of her special love for animals. Margie’s dearest companions were her loving puppy, Brandi, and her sweet kitty, Baby. She was never at peace leaving her animals for any length of time. She always rushed back to take care of their needs. If her Dallas family convinced her to come for a visit, they could be sure the pets would be visiting, too.
Margie was blessed to have two wonderful, caring and skilled caregivers in her later years, Mary Netherly and Ashley McCollister. Mary and Ashley followed Margie to Holiday Nursing Home where they continued their support and devotion to her needs until the end.
She will be dearly missed by her family, her kind friends in Center, and her church, Hillcrest Baptist.

He always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. He loved to entertain others and see a smile when he was done. Hoyt was also known as “Pop-a-top” and made many friends up and down the road over the C.B. Radio. He was always willing to help anyone he could help. Hoyt was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Earnie Mae Goodwin, 65, a former resident of Center, TX, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2014. She was born to Mazana Sanders Goodwin and L.Z. “Red” Goodwin on June 16, 1949.
Earnie received her high school diploma from C.H. Daniels School in 1967. She later went on to receive a degree in business and a degree in theology. Earnie became a licensed missionary and continued to spread God’s Word throughout her life.

Charles Monroe “Chuck” Armstrong, age 67 passed away at Willis Knighton Medical Center North in Shreveport, LA on December 12, 2014. He was born on July 3, 1947 in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana to parents Charles Monroe Armstrong, Sr and Helen Louise Rutherford Armstrong.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 15, 2014 at 9:30 am Calvary Baptist Church in Nacogdoches with Rev. Paul Sevar officiating. His recognized expertise in utility industry technologies led Chuck to not only travel extensively across the United States but around the world.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War and a member of the Dallas Chapter of Greet the Troops. He was a deacon at Calvary Baptist Church and a member of the Renewal Sunday School Class. Chuck never met a stranger and people enjoyed spending time with him. He was always eager to share his faith and to mentor others. He loved his wife, his daughters and grandchildren and lead a devoted life to honor God. He was an admirable man and will be greatly missed.

Mr. Robert Joe Marshall, 49, of Timpson, TX, passed away Friday, December 12, 2014, in Nacogdoches, TX, following an automobile accident. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM, Thursday, December 18, 2014, in Taylor Funeral Home Chapel. Born September 13, 1965, in La Plata, Maryland, Robert Joe Marshall was the son of the late Jackson George Marshall and Glenda Jean Lobaugh Polk. Robert was a truck driver, carpenter, and of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed reading, deer hunting, and most of all, spending time with his grandkids. He loved to be needed and took much pleasure in helping others. This was evident even after his death because of his wishes to be an organ and tissue donor.
Survivors include his wife Robin Beavers Marshall of Timpson; mother Glenda “Granny” Polk of Timpson; son James Travis Marshall of Timpson; daughters, Jessica Lynn Marshall of Center and Eileen Marie Marshall and husband Kevin of Carthage; stepchildren: Amanda Muska and husband Zach of Barbers Hill, TX, Travis Goodrum of Timpson, Danielle Brown and fiance’ Reginald Davis III of Lubbock, and Shelby Brown of Martinsville; and 5 grandchildren: Jayden, Brooklynn, Brielle, Jazzmine, and Rylan.

Dr. Steve Oates passed away at his home on December 8, 2014. He was born in Center, Texas on January 23, 1933, to Dr. L.S. Oates and Lucille Weaver Oates. Steve graduated from Center High School in 1950, attended the University of Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, Texas. It was there that he met the love of his life, Frances Shepherd, who became his wife and the mother of his sons, and a partner in every aspect of his life and work. Their impact on the lives and activities of the people in Center and Shelby County is legend. Dr. Steve’s greatest sorrow was the death of Frances in May of 2010.
Both Dr. Steve and Frances, a registered nurse, joined his dad’s medical practice, Shelby Clinic, in 1958, and Dr. Steve continued to treat his patients until the day of his death. He will be sorely missed by all of those who depended upon him to see to their health needs for so many years as well as by the many friends who relied on him to make their lives brighter and make them laugh at the “punny” jokes that he loved.
Dr. Steve was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church and continued to worship there until the time of his death. He is survived by two sons, Laried Oates, of Center, Shepherd Oates and wife Denise, grandson Stephen D. Oates and wife Leslie, and great granddaughter, Ryiot Kloe Oates, the joy of his life, all of Mesquite, Texas and Sister, Portia Gaines of Center.
It is so hard, indeed, impossible, to say goodbye to a man who has meant so much to so many, but we are deeply grateful to have had him in our lives for so many years as our trusted physician and beloved friend, and our memories of Dr.Steve will continue to live in our minds and hearts. He was a man of honor: kind, modest, smart, funny, one who devoted his life and time to improving the lives of others. Oh, yes, his was a life well spent.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fannie Brown Booth Library, the First Christian Church in Center, or any charity of choice.
Graveside Services will be 4:00 p.m. Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Fairview Cemetery in Center with Bro. Aubie McSwain officiating. No visitation is planned.

Edith Smith, 82, of Center, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014 at Memorial Health Systems in San Augustine.
Services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Ramah Baptist Church in Tenaha with Bro. Keith Keele officiating. Burial will follow at Ramah Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday prior to the service starting at noon at the Ramah Baptist Church.
She was born October 14, 1932 in Seabrook, Texas to Ralph Adolph and Murl Beatrice (Pate) Hammer.

James E. “Bud” Parker (Honey), 64, of Joaquin, passed away Friday, December 5, 2014 in San Augustine.
Services will be 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 8, 2014 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Strong Cemetery in Huxley. Visitation will be Sunday, December 7, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.
He was born September 5, 1950 in Center to E.E. and Lela (McDaniel) Parker. He graduated from Joaquin High School. He served in the US Army Reserves for 6 years. He worked as a mechanic at Holly Farms.

Russell Stone, 72, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, December 4, 2014 in Nacogdoches.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Wimberly Chapel in Shelby County. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Wimberly Chapel in Shelby County with Bro. Jeff Spring officiating. Interment will follow at Wimberly Cemetery.
Russell was born July 15, 1942 in Wheeler, Texas to Christine and Lewis Stone. Russell had a large family including father, mother, 5 brothers and 2 sisters, all except a brother of which have preceded him in death.
While spending time in Japan, Russell met the love of his life Kim and they later married. Kim preceded him in death in 2009.
Russell was a retired navy man as well as a retired worker from the nuclear plant in Bay City, Texas.
He is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews and his joy, best friend and dog, Cowboy.
He will be greatly missed.

Larry Lorenzo Johnson was born to the late Carl and Geraldine Johnson in Shelby County on May 3, 1957 and passed away peacefully at his residence on November 20, 2014 after a brief illness. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, December 6, 2014, at Wallace Chapel Baptist Church officiated by Pastor Derrick Rhodes.
Mr. Johnson loved life. He was an avid golfer and delighted in family gatherings. He loved spending time with his youngest son, Tyreese, and teaching him how to fish, hunt and play football. He was also very proud of his son D.J. (Lorenzo) and daughter, Kimberly. He especially loved his brothers, sisters, other family members and his friends who will all miss him dearly.
He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Tucker and husband, Torry Sr., of Tyler; sons, Lorenzo Johnson of Tyler and Tyreese Johnson of Garrison; two grandchildren, Jourdin Johnson and Torry Tucker Jr., both of Tyler; his brother Mario Johnson (Haruka), sisters Hattie Love, Etoise Mclendon (LaVance), Jeanette Johnson, Faye Johnson (Larry), his very special friend Lutricia Patton-Garrett, and a host of other relatives and friends who were so special to him.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Carl and Geraldine Johnson, sister, Carylon Hudson, and brother, Charles Ray Johnson.
The family would like to thank the health care workers and staff members at East Texas Hospice for their professional, tender care.
The family also wishes to express their sincere thanks for the expressions of love from family and friends.
