Jane Frances Young Smith, 86, of Garrison, Texas went home to the Lord on June 23, 2014, at the Hospice of East Texas. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at First Baptist Church Garrison, 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 28, with Brother Jeremy Pruitt officiating. The deacons of First Baptist Church are honorary pallbearers. A reception will follow in the church Christian Life Center. A private grave side service will be held at a later date.

Born January 26, 1928 on the family farm near Garrison, Jane was the only child of Gus W. and Jessie Jopling Young. Jane accepted Christ when she was 12 years old at an outdoor summer revival, then quickly found her place in God’s service. She taught Sunday School – which she considered her spiritual gift – for 61 years, until 2012. She especially loved teaching the Dorcas class at First Baptist Church in Garrison.

After several years living on the family farm, Jane and her parents moved “in town” to a home on Garrison’s Main Street. She attended Garrison schools, graduating as valedictorian in 1944. In 1948, she earned a BA degree from Baylor University. That same year she married a handsome Baylor man, Ernest Duane Smith. Duane’s work took them for a short while to Baltimore, Maryland and then to Garland, Texas for 20 years. While living in Garland, Jane taught junior high school English for 8 years and third grade Sunday School. Jane and Duane’s only child, Gregory Duane Smith, was born there, in 1958.

In 1971, the family returned to Garrison, where Jane stayed busy at First Baptist Church wearing may hats: Sunday School teacher, church clerk, building/decorating committee member, and church trustee. Jane was a charter member of the Greenwood Cemetery Association, serving as its secretary and treasurer for almost 40 years.

While in her 70's, Jane decided she could do more, so she ran for election to the Garrison City Council, where she served her community for six years. One highlight of her life was being selected as Garrison Citizen of the Year in 2008. Jane also cherished her 80th birthday celebration, attended by over 100 family and friends.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents, and by Duane in 1997. After Duane’s death, Jane designed and built a new home on the Main Street lot where she had grown up. She often commented that life is a circle and that she was so happy to be back where she started, in the town she loved so much.

Cherishing Jane’s memory are her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Treacey Smith, her beloved grandchildren, Nolan Smith and his wife, Stacy, Caroline Smith, and Sarah Smith, and a beautiful great-granddaughter, Catherine Smith. Also Jane’s cousins, Nannette Collins and Nelcene Phillips, who were like sisters to her.

Jane’s family wishes to thank her dearest friends, Veralene and Elmer Edgmon, for always being there, whatever she needed.. The family also wishes to thank the four wonderful women who stayed with Jane during the last year of her life - June Barclay, Patsy Coulter, Johnnie Ruth Jopling, and Barbara McDonald. Jane’s greatest wish was to stay in her home. They gave her that gift.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Garrison Building Fund, Box 99, Garrison, TX 75946 or to the Hospice of East Texas Foundation, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, TX 75701.

Jane’s prayer for everyone she knew and loved comes from Numbers 6:24 - 26: “The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make His face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”

A life honoring graveside service for Ernest Hogg, 98, will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Kountze, TX. Visitation with family and friends will be Friday, June 13, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Lumberton Family Funeral Home.

Ernest died on June 9, 2014. He was born November 9, 1915, in Beaumont, TX to George and Beulah Hogg.

He loved when his children and grandchildren would visit, was mild mannered, had a good sense of humor, and never complained or had anything bad to say about anyone. Ernest as a young man, along with his cousins, would hop trains and travel with the hobos. The difference was they had money in their pockets, so they would sneak off to eat on their own. A lover of sweets in general, chocolate was Ernest’s favorite. While in Chicago he went into U. S. Steel and was hired on the spot. Never mind he was unsure of what they’d hired him to do, it was a warm place to work, and he would figure it out! He went on to work for Sun Pipeline and Pinewood Country Club before retiring. Ernest married Ruby in 1958 and cared for her many years through illnesses until her death, as well as his brother, Vernon. He always had a garden where he enjoyed tending his flowers. His Dad told him “If you have a baby girl, I will buy you a new car.” He never got that car…

Left to cherish his memory are sons, Robert Hogg and wife, Lisa, of Carthage, TX, Frank Brannon and wife, Michelle, of Simonton, TX, Robert ‘Bobby’ Brannon and wife, Beverly, of Vidor, TX, Donald Hogg and wife, Lavinda, of Carthage, TX, Cleve Hogg and wife, Patti, of Carthage, TX, Steve Hogg of Longview, TX, and Gary Hogg and wife, Dana, of Lumberton, TX; eighteen grandchildren; and twenty-nine great-grandchildren.

Ernest was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Spoonemore Hogg; son, Raymond Hogg; parents; brother, Vernon Hogg; and sister, Lela Hogg.
