Bettye Graves Smith, 76, of Center, formerly of Port Arthur, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015 in San Augustine.

Douglas Davis Stiernberg M.D. of Texas City, TX, dedicated physician, public servant, and American patriot, passed away on January 20, 2015, at the age of 87. Dr. Stiernberg had a servant’s heart as he served God, his country, his family and his patients.
Dr. Stiernberg was born in Houston, Texas on October 14, 1927, grew up in Huntsville, Texas and graduated from high school at the age of 16 in 1944. He received his undergraduate degree from Sam Houston State University at the age of 18, where he was later named an Outstanding Alumni. He attended medical school at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where he graduated at the age of 21 in 1949, interned at Jeff Davis Hospital, and briefly practiced at the Texas prison system.
He entered the Army Medical Corp and proudly served 26 months of active duty as a battalion aid surgeon in the 40th Infantry Division during the Korean War. He loved his country and was grateful for the opportunity to serve.
Dr. Stiernberg began private practice in 1955 in Texas City and Galveston, specializing in eye, ear, nose and throat. He served as Chief of Staff at Galveston County Memorial Hospital. Over the years he additionally served on the medical staffs of several other area hospitals, including John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, St. Mary’s Hospital in Galveston, and Danforth Memorial Hospital in Texas City. He also taught as an Assistant Clinical Professor at UTMB for several years.
He served as President of the Galveston County Medical Society in 1979 and was a member of numerous other medical societies, including the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, and the Texas and American Societies of Opthamology and Otolaryngology. He retired in 1999, 50 years after graduating from medical school. Dr. Doug truly enjoyed the practice of medicine and had an unswerving dedication to the welfare of his patients.
He served on the Board of Trustees of the Texas City Independent School District from 1978 to 1990 and twice served as its president. He was also a member of the Texas City chapter of Rotary Club International for 59 years. Dr. Doug also served as a bank director at Texas First Bank for many years.
He was a member of St John’s United Methodist Church. In addition to God, family and medicine, he loved history, reading, his high school reunions, airplanes, and photography.
He is preceded in death by his father, Royal Campbell Stiernberg; his mother, Nell Davis Stiernberg; one brother, Cam Stiernberg; and his sister, Mary Stiernberg Copeland. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sally Menefee Stiernberg; daughter Amy Stiernberg Jordan and husband Greg of Austin, Texas; son Michael Douglas Stiernberg and wife Paula of Austin, Texas; and granddaughters Emily Ann Jordan, Ellen Elizabeth Jordan, Erin Catherine Jordan, and grandsons Stanton Dean Stiernberg and John Davis Stiernberg.
The family would like to thank Dr. Alfredo Nodarse and Dr. David Nickeson for their care during his illness.
The Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 23rd at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 8200 24th Avenue North, Texas City. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM with the service immediately following. Honorary pallbearers are Gary Potter, Frank Simpson, Dr. Charles Broman, H.D. Sam Alfred “Al” Chance, 75, of Center, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2015 in Nacogdoches.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center. A visitation will be held prior to the funeral service, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Mr. Chance was born February 15, 1939 in the Rosevine Community of Sabine County to Sam Houston Chance and Vera Phillips Chance. He retired from Education after forty-five years of service. Mr. Chance was Superintendent at Center ISD for twenty-five years and previously served as a Teacher and Assistant Principal at Orange ISD, Superintendent at Brady ISD, Principal at Drippings Springs ISD and Principal and Superintendent at Premont ISD. He was a member of Rotary Club and First Baptist Church in Center.

Effie J. Edwards, 89, of Timpson, Texas, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2015 in Garrison, Texas. She was born on December 30, 1925 in the Stockman Community of Shelby County, the daughter of Taylor Smith and Sally Samford Smith. Ms. White was born April 27, 1929, in Snohomish, Washington. Verna Pauline White was the daughter of the late Robert and Alice P. Cottrell. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Verna enjoyed bowling, quilting, and watching Western shows on television. Ms. White was a member of The Called Out Church in Center, Texas and loved her church greatly.
She is survived by her daughter, Becky Mefford of Timpson, Texas; two brothers; one sister and a host of family and friends who will miss her greatly.
Ms. White was preceded in death by her husband, James F. White; parents; daughters, Deborah Pierce and Linda Smith.

Bettie Sue Florey White Hadac, 85, of Nacogdoches, passed away on Monday, January 19, 2015 in Nacogdoches. She was born on May 3, 1929 in Durant, Oklahoma, the daughter of Frank H. Florey and Louise Taylor Florey. Visitation will be held Friday, January 23, 2015 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Laird Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, with Bro. Paul Sevar officiating. Interment will follow at Dixon Cemetery in Shelby County.
Bettie Sue (or “Boo” as she was called by her sisters) grew up in the Tyler and Kilgore areas, where she studied violin, piano, and saxophone (playing in the marching and swing bands in high school and college), and performed dramatists and musical programs. After graduating from Kilgore High School, Bettie Sue attended and graduated from Kilgore Jr. College. While she was raising her four children, being a stay at home mom, and an avid volunteer for the community, she took classes at Tyler Jr. College. She was also President of the Pharmacists Wives Association for several years. She taught Sunday School from nursery to adult in Tyler, Kilgore, and Nacogdoches. She helped establish and taught at the Spanish-speaking church through Friendly Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas. She then decided to continue her education at Stephen F. Austin State University where she earned both her Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Master’s Degree in Education and Counseling. She also earned a Doctorate in Philosophy from Texas A & M University. Bettie Sue’s main hobbies were reading and studying. She was very proficient in scripture, and theological study challenged her.
Bettie Sue was an educator specializing in working with special needs students and received numerous awards and recognitions for her work. She had also been an instructor for the deaf, a teacher of adult education, and taught general studies to the Nacogdoches firefighters. She was passionate about learning and took continuing education classes until her retirement. When Gov. Mark White established the initiative to reform education, she was appointed by the governor to the committee to develop the deaf education curriculum. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Nacogdoches County Retired Teachers, SFA Alumni Association, Phi Delta Kappa International, Convention of American Instructors of the Deaf, Texas A & M Century Club Association of Former Students, Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf, and Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists, Specialist in School Psychology. She also was a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs and AARP. Bettie Sue was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she belonged to the Dorothy Hardy Sunday School class and the Golden Agers. She felt that it was a blessing to sing with the senior choir, The Joyful Sound.

Joyce Ann Livingston Putnam was born April 27, 1946 in Center, Texas and passed away January 19, 2015 in Plano/Dallas area of Texas. Joyce was a follower of Jesus Christ, a Girl Scout, a Rainbow Girl and a member of the Eastern Star Order. For 10 years she worked as a dental hygienist. She spent the remainder of her life as a homemaker.
Joyce was a very caring and compassionate person who put the needs and concerns of others before her own. Her family and friends knew she would be there to listen, council and give advice. She enjoyed reading, classic movies, cooking, and traveling. She loved telling stories and jokes that made everyone laugh and feel good. Joyce was the earthly love, support and strength of her husband Larry for 48 1/2 years. Together, they enjoyed many adventures, which included all God's creatures great and small. Joyce was the proud mother of only daughter, Celeste, for 39 years. She and Larry raised Celeste in a Christian home for Celeste was a gift from God.

Christine Ward, 98, of Center, passed away Monday, January 19, 2015 at Green Acres Nursing Home in Center.
A private graveside service was held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Stanley, Louisiana.
Ms. Ward was born October 4, 1916 in Logansport, Louisiana to Robert Taylor and Nettie Langford Taylor. She grew up in Logansport, Louisiana and later moved to Houston, Texas, where she was employed at Foley’s Department Store. She soon moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and later returned home to Logansport, Louisiana to serve as a caregiver to her father. Ms. Ward most recently resided in Center, Texas. She loved the Lord and was a member of First Assembly of God in Center. Her hobbies included sewing and flower gardening.

Fred was born on August 11, 1958 in Center, Texas. He received his education in Center Public School System. Fred was a born mechanic, he had a God given talent. He didn't meet a stranger , his smile was contagious. Fred was hard working and self-employed for many years until recently when he joined his father working for the family business at L.H. Hewitt Inc.

Gail worked at many reputable companies, mostly related to the poultry industry before settling in Center with Shelby Savings Bank, where he was president for seven years and vice chairman of the Board of Directors for twenty years. Gail has been affiliated with numerous organizations including the Lions Club, Roughrider Scholarship Foundation (Secretary), member of the Rotary Club, Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary International, Center Flying Club (Secretary Treasurer), Center Country Club (Director), Center City Council and a member of the First Methodist Church.

He accomplished many things in his lifetime; he served in the Air Force for 7-1/2 years and owned his own Insurance Agency, was an accomplished electrical contractor, rancher and was dedicated to his faith as an Ordained Minister (Deacon in the Catholic Church).
His greatest pride and legacy was his loving spouse of 56 years, Carol E. Doyle.
Michael is also survived by his beloved children, Michael T. Doyle Jr. (Ritchel), Mark E. Doyle and Brian S. Doyle.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph Doyle; stepfather, Charles Edward Hooker; mother, Julia Doyle Hooker; daughters, Dana Lynn Doyle and Denise Mary Doyle.

Richard Hibbard, 69, of Center, Texas, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2015 at his residence.
Mr. Hibbard’s wishes were to be cremated and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center, Texas.
Mr. Hibbard was born November 22, 1945 in Houston, Texas to Joseph Cecil Hibbard and Dorothy Tyrone Hibbard. He was a Christian and of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Hibbard was a sheet metal worker for 42 years which he excelled at earning many awards and certificates throughout his career. He began his apprenticeship in 1967 and graduated in 1971. He became a member of the Sheet Metal Workers’ Union in 1971 and worked until he retired in 2009.
In 1989, Mr. Hibbard purchased property in Whitt, Texas to begin his dream of having a peach farm. He had approximately 900 peach trees along with plums, grapes, blackberries, tomatoes, and much more that was sold at market. Mr. Hibbard was a successful farmer for 18 years and was very proud of his farm.
He will be greatly missed.

Merline Metcalf, 89, of Panama City, FL formerly of Center, Texas passed away Saturday, January 3, 2015 in Panama City, FL.

She born April 17, 1924 to Bud Luman and Nonie McSwain Luman, Mrs. Metcalf was born and raised in Center, Texas, and attended church at Mt Pleasant Church of Christ. Until in 1993, her health forced her to move closer to her younger daughter, to Panama City, Fl. She remained there at Lisenby Retirement Center until her death. She touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 5, 2015 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Bud McGee officiating. Interment will follow at Spann’s Chapel Cemetery in Shelby County.
Ms. Honeycutt was born September 27, 1914 in Shelby County to Walter D. Eaves and Decie Estes Eaves. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin University and went on to be a school teacher. Christine “Granny Honey” was such a caring and loving person to her husband, boys, and grandchildren. She cared for her parents and siblings and was a friend to all. Christine was a devout Christian, a charter member of Spann’s Chapel Baptist Church and a member of Order of Eastern Star. She was known for her fried chicken and coconut pie. Christine was a gardener and always had a beautiful yard. She will be missed.

Retired Texas Ranger Captain Newton W. Clark passed peacefully from this life on December 31, 2014, in Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, at the age of 88.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 2, 2015 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Terry Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.
‘Dub’, as he was known to all who knew him, was born January 3, 1926 in Center, Texas. Dub Clark was raised in the Antioch and James communities of Shelby County during the Great Depression. At age 16, he enrolled in what is now Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas where he had received a scholarship to play football. In 1944, when Sam Houston State University suspended their athletic programs, he joined the U.S. Navy and served honorably in Europe and the Far East until after war’s end.
Dub Clark answered his life’s calling when he began his career in law enforcement in 1950. He graduated from Texas Highway Patrol Class #16 that year and was assigned to work in Crockett, Texas. He remained there until he was transferred to his home town of Center, Texas, where he and his partner, Russell Vineyard, served the citizens of Shelby, San Augustine, and Sabine Counties for twelve years.
In 1962, he was promoted and assigned to Texas Rangers, ‘Co. A’ and stationed in San Augustine, Texas. In his capacity as Texas Ranger, he proudly served the citizens of San Augustine, Shelby, and Sabine Counties, and other localities as needed. He was promoted to Texas Ranger, Sergeant, and transferred to DPS Headquarters in 1974, where he served as Assistant Chief of Criminal Law Enforcement. He was later promoted to Captain, Texas Rangers, and assigned as the first Commander of the DPS Office of Internal Affairs.
Throughout his law enforcement career, Dub Clark was known for his integrity, forthrightness, and compassion. He took great pride in mentoring young men who followed his example in entering the field of law enforcement. He always strove to instill in them the realization that their profession was a high calling which carried a sacred trust never to be violated.
As a criminal investigator, he was unsurpassed. As a peace officer serving his State and his community, he always exhibited the highest degree of moral character, integrity, and friendliness to those whom he met.
Dub Clark was a member of the Church of Christ and served as an elder and song leader for many years. Over the years, Dub Clark taught many young men how to lead singing.
Dub Clark is predeceased by his parents, Wright Eugene ‘Jack’ and Gertrude Dean Clark, sister Lavern Fields, and wife of 31 years, Billie Marie Clark.
Dub Clark is survived by his wife, Mary Kay Clark, of Austin, Texas, sons Steve Clark and wife Helen, of Whitehouse, Texas, Bill Clark and wife Melinda, of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, and Jimmy Clark and wife Sue, of Milam, Texas. He is also survived by stepchildren Paul ‘Gil’ Gowing and wife Karen, of Clermont, Florida, John ‘Tiger’ Gowing and wife Jennifer, of Sachse, Texas, and Meredith Gowing Kimbrough and husband Scott, of Round Rock, Texas. He cherished and was immensely proud of all fourteen of his grandchildren: Jason Clark of Alpharetta, Georgia, Amy Cohen, and husband Mark, of Keller, Texas, Daniel and Judith Clark of Whitehouse, Texas, Katy Newbold and husband, Craig, of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, Connie Barron and husband Brandon, of Hawkins, Texas, Brady Clark and wife Abra, of Huntsville, Texas, Matt Clark of Kyle, Texas, Stacy Clark of San Augustine, Texas, Tanner, Tyler, and Trey Gowing of Sachse, Texas, and Cassidy and Cooper Kimbrough of Round Rock, Texas. He also leaves behind nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Danny Young, Travis Brasil, David Noble, Tom Maddox, Maxie Eaves and Larry Williford. Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Clark, Matt Clark, Brady Clark and Daniel Clark.
