Gerald David Estes, 71, of Center, Texas, joined his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, in Center, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 5, 2018, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. A funeral service honoring David will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, July 6, 2018, at New Life Church in Center with Bro. Steve Noble, Bro. Mike Miller, Sister Melba Rodgers, and Bro. Terry Goodnight officiating. Interment will follow at Strong Cemetery in Huxley.

Gerald David Estes was born October 28, 1946, in Lafayette, Louisiana, to Frazar Estes and Ruth Burkett Estes. David graduated from Gladewater High School in Gladewater, Texas, and continued his education at Kilgore College, eventually graduating from Lamar University with a degree in business. David began his career as a Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrolman in Orange County, Texas. While serving his state, David was drafted into the United Stated Armed Services and was deployed as a medic in the military. David was honorably discharged and returned to his job as a State Highway Patrolman.

After moving to Shelby County, David owned and operated the popular Shady Oaks Grocery and Feed for nearly twenty years. Each weekday Shady Oaks was full of hungry patrons ordering the delicious, home-cooked lunches and famous cheeseburgers. David filled the store with pictures proudly showing off his family and friends. Dave, as he was affectionately known, always greeted customers and employees with a smile and lovingly described the stories the pictures told.

Dave and his beloved wife Gina operated poultry farms in Shelby County for twenty years. After retiring, Dave and Gina planned their lives around their children and grandchildren and traveled throughout the country on hunting and fishing trips and attending golf tournaments, horse shows, baseball games, and family vacations. Amongst Dave’s most prized trips are those hunting in Africa with his sons.

Shelby County residents often would see David and Gina enjoying date nights. David began each morning reading his Bible with a cup of coffee. Dave loved working on his farm and watching his deer.

Dave did not meet a stranger. His warm smile and gentle hug made those who met him immediately feel loved. Within five minutes of speaking to Dave, his dedication to Christ became apparent. Dave devoted his life to the Lord, leading a Christian life by example. He was a hard working and humble servant to his Lord. Dave regularly attended Church and enjoyed bible studies each week.

Knowing Dave, there is no doubt in anyone’s heart that his most wonderful moment was hearing those words from his Lord on Tuesday morning, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”

Service in Celebration of the Life of Roy Edward Masterson (October 5th, 1927 - June 30th, 2018)

Unforgettable.
Roy Edward Masterson was born in Louisville, Kentucky; his father a cobbler, his mother a lady of royal French Heritage. He grew up in a neighborhood that required him to defend himself going to and from school, but you wouldn’t have been able to tell that at first glance due in major part to his handsome smile and gentlemanly swagger. Roy was the walking definition of grit.  He worked through the Great Depression rebuilding automobiles, purchasing them for nothing and reselling them for pure profit until he turned 16. Roy’s patriotism ran deep as he lied about his age and joined the US Navy in 1945 so that he could serve his county and in 1946 received an honorable discharge.

Intentional.
Roy met Doris Cobb on a blind double date.  He was supposed to take her friend out, but after one look at Doris, there was no turning back – he knew she was everything.  Shortly thereafter they married on January 8th, 1946.

Devoted.
While in Kentucky, he built numerous projects for his children, including a lawn mower powered go cart. He was active as a Scoutmaster and helped his boys learn how to play ball in the Little League. You should have seen his underhand softball pitch!.

Driven.
Roy worked as a mechanic, owned a vending machine company, built and sold houses in Kentucky, raised tobacco, became an accountant and started a family - the accomplishment he held highest. At an early age, Roy was active in several charitable causes through the Masonic Lodge. After acquiring a position with Cumberland Case Company, he moved his family from Kentucky to Dallas in 1962.  He became a pilot and loved it for numerous reasons, impressing Doris to be at the top of that list. As well as traveling all over the US, he used his plane to become more efficient in sales with Cumberland as he serviced six states and Mexico.  In 1968, he purchased a poultry farm in Center and started Poultry Products Company on the farm before he formed Local Chapter 311 of Germania Insurance, to help families afford insurance coverage. He served as a director on the Germania Farm Mutual Board of directors and helped many families when tragedy occurred and became a staple man in the community.

Faithful.
He was active in Middletown Methodist Church and raised his family in the faith. Roy and Doris joined First United Methodist Church of Center in 1968 where they were active with the Runnels Chapel Sunday school Class for nearly 40 years, chairing many committees and volunteering countless hours

Adventurous.
Roy loved to fly and share his passion with friends and family.  He spent many hours at the Center Airport and formed Center Airomotive to help grow and transform the airport to be what it is today.  Roy flew many hours, but his best memories were when Doris and his sons and grandchildren were with him.

Hopeful.
Eight years after Doris passed away, Roy met Lyn Logan. Their relationship was blessed by the Lord and they shared their lives together, loving and giving comfort to each other. Lyn was at his side when he passed.

Loved.
Roy was incredibly loved by so many and survived by
Lyn Logan of Center, Texas
Ron Masterson and his wife Linda of Shreveport, La
Garry Masterson and his wife Cindy of Bryan, Texas
Riley Masterson and Pam Longton of Austin, Texas
David Masterson and his wife Mary of Center, Texas

Nine grandchildren:
Brett Masterson of San Francisco, California
Shannon Young and her husband Tony of St Louis, Missouri
RJ Masterson and his wife LeAnn of Center, Texas
Josh Masterson and his wife Jamie of College Station, Texas

Chris Masterson and his wife to be, Shannon of Austin, Texas
Melody Masterson-Benavides and her husband, Carlos of Austin, Texas
Michelle Masterson of Dallas, Texas
Michael Masterson and his wife Lauren of Center, Texas

Sixteen great-grandchildren with two more joining his family in September.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Doris Cobb Masterson, mother of his children who passed away March 22, 2008, parents Earl Edward Masterson and Louise Z. Stubblefield Masterson, brother Louie Masterson and sister Alberta.

Tonya Joann Simmons Bailey, 47, of Center, Texas, passed away on July 1, 2018 in Center. She was born on January 29, 1971 in Baytown, Texas to Odis Eugene Simmons and Lila Smith Simmons. A memorial celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Center with Bro. J.C. Lewis and Bro. Grant Murphree officiating. There will be a reception immediately following the service at First Baptist Church. All are welcome to attend.

Tonya moved to Center when she was in 7th grade and graduated with the Center High School class of 1989. Tonya met Todd Bailey for the first time at Solley’s Club and then fate happened to bring them together once again in Benton, Louisiana at the Longhorn Club. They both realized it was meant to be and formed an unexplainable bond that would last 26 years. Todd and Tonya were married on October 24, 1992 at Center First Baptist Church and they cherished every second spent with one another over the next few decades.

Tonya was always driven and business minded. She began her career at Center Autoplex as a sales representative and finance manager. After a few years, another opportunity opened up for her, and she began working for M&M Insurance where she remained the rest of her career. She loved working with people and doing business. A piece of advice that she lived by and shared with fellow sales associates she was training was, “Don’t every speak first, because if you speak first, you lose.”

Tonya was a pillar in the community and devoted so much of her time to serving those around her. Her most notable accomplishment was building the legacy that is Bailey’s Pageants. She was even featured on TLC’s “Toddlers and Tiaras” multiple times during her career. She also was responsible for the production of local pageants such as Miss Shelby County, Watermelon Festival, Big Bass Splash, and the Little Miss Merry Christmas and Mr. Happy Holidays. She, along with her family, has been involved in pageants all her life. This was a way that Tonya enjoyed helping others find their inner and outer beauty and confidence. Lighting up the stage was fun but seeing a light shine bright within her pageant contestants was most rewarding for Tonya. She always went above and beyond what was expected of her in everything she set forth to do.

Tonya treasured each and every moment spent working with and directing the pageants, but the most precious moment of her life was the day her granddaughter, Landree Grace was born. Tonya loved spending as much time with Landree as she could and wanted to make sure she had the best of everything. In her free time, Tonya found time to read, shop with her nieces and travel. Her favorite places to visit were the beach and most especially, New Orleans.

Tonya radiated life everywhere she went. Her smile, her laugh and her love would brighten a room. She made a point to lift others up and to help them see their true value and worth. Her joy and passion for life overflowed onto all who were blessed to know her. Tonya was an inspiration to so many, especially during her battle with cancer. She fought valiantly every day with a smile. No matter how much pain she was in, she chose to live that day to its fullest. Tonya will be dearly missed, but her beautiful legacy will live on in the innumerable lives she has positively impacted over the years.

Mary Evelyn Tyson Johnson passed away on June 17, 2018 at age 90, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Born in Timpson, Texas, to Gilmer and Mary Tyson, she grew up in the Waterman community of Center, Shelby County, Texas. As all friends and family know, she met and married her beloved husband of 60 years, E.F "Foots" Johnson, also of Center, in their hometown.

Residing the majority of their life together in Dallas, Texas, they always returned to their farm in Waterman, every moment they could. She liked to laugh and tell people that her address was Interstate 20 due to the endless hours of traveling between Dallas and Center.

Evelyn inherited her mother's artistic talent and gardening interests. The latter led her to share these interests through study, teaching and volunteer work. However, she expanded her interests in other areas too. She had a passion to meet people and be involved with civic organizations. This passion provided for many unique experiences and opportunities as well as lifelong friends; such as being invited to demonstrate the ‘Art of making Lye Soap,’ Pioneer style, at both the 1968 Texas Folklife Festival held by the Institute of Texan Cultures at the HemisFair, San Antonio, Texas, and the nation’s 1976 U.S Bicentennial Folklife Festival celebration at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Mesquite Art Club, Mesquite Garden Club, East Texas Archeology Society, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Mesquite Citizens Police Academy, Shelby County Historical Society and Kappa Alpha Theta. In addition, she authored her book of family heritage and tales called Memories, with a second in progress. She was a member of the Old Home Missionary Baptsit Church in Shelby County.
