Oliver W. Barnett, 85, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2021, in Nacogdoches.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 12, 2021, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with visitation at 9:30 a.m. Bro. Rusty Hall will officiate. Interment will follow at Strong Cemetery in Huxley.

Born March 3, 1936, Oliver is the son of Merl Barnett and Lois Whitton Barnett. He served in the United States Army. Later, Oliver was employed with Louisiana State Department of Agriculture. He was a member of both Texas Agriculture and Timber Association and Texas Cattle Association. When time allowed, Oliver loved to travel.

Cleveburn Cameron, 63, of Timpson, Texas passed away June 8, 2021 in Center, Texas. Born October 24, 1957, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Cleveburn is the son of Leslie Cameron and Addie Carter.

Visitation will be held Monday June 14, 2021 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at Mangum Funeral home Center, Texas.

SGM Archie Willie (Pete) Hartsfield, 85, was born on March 31, 1936 in Garrison, Texas to the late Cleo Patra Hartsfield Patton King. He departed this life on Tuesday, June 1, 2021. His youth was spent in Garrison, Texas where he was raised by his grandparents John and Rebecca Hartsfield. 

He attended school in Garrison, enlisting in the U.S. Army immediately following graduation. He married his childhood sweetheart, Bobbie Sue (Phillips) Hartsfield on June 7, 1954, and together they raised 3 children while traveling throughout the United States and Europe. Archie was a dedicated family man who took pride in providing for those he loved.

While serving in the military, he received many awards and accolades including the Legion of Merit, the highest peacetime medal awarded by the U.S. Army. During his years of service, Archie had various overseas assignments including Korea, Greenland, Germany, and Vietnam. His stateside assignments include Aiken, South Carolina, Homestead, Florida, San Francisco, California, and Ft. Bliss, Texas. He moved up the ranks over the years, eventually earning the Senior Non-Commissioned Rank of E-9 Sergeant Major before retiring from the military on March 30, 1984 after 30 years of service. After his enlistment, Archie continued to dedicate his life to serving his country by working in the civil service until his retirement after 15 years of dedication. He was also an active member of the Umpires Association for many years, which gave him the opportunity to take part in his passion for sports. 

For 49 years, he and Bobbie made a life for their family in El Paso and Nacogdoches, Texas until her passing in 2003. He then met and married Pamela Hartsfield, who cared for him in El Paso, Texas until his death. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends here on Earth, but his spirit will live on through us all. 
Archie was preceded in death by his wife Bobbie S. Hartsfield; son Stanley Hartsfield; granddaughter Shalonda Thomas; great-grandson D’ante Thomas; mother Cleo Patra Hartsfield Patton King; sister Georgia Matthews; brothers Taylor Patton, Jr., Maurell Patton, and Floyd Patton.

Born August 13, 1953 in Baytown, Texas to LD Hibbard, Sr. and Josephine “Mollie” Hibbard Barton. Kathy was raised in Shelby County. She attended school at Shelbyville and Center High School.

Kathy was an outgoing, fun loving, and witty person. She loved her children beyond measure. She had a talent for writing poetry and a love for music. She was a devoted Christian and enjoyed attending church regularly.

Born April 23, 1933, in Ferriday, Louisiana, Carol is the daughter of Henry Daniels and Ruby Stevens Daniels.  She earned her BA in nursing and became an RN. Carol was a dedicate wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking and cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren. Her hobbies included coloring and gardening. A dedicated Christian, Carol was active in her church and other Christian organizations. She was a member of Gloster Baptist Church, where she taught the 4 and 5 year old children’s classes with Hall Burford for many years. After retirement, Mr. & Mrs. Cook traveled the country doing missionary work.

Morris Donal Shofner, 86, passed away on May 27, 2021 in Houston, Texas.

Morris was born December 20, 1934 to World War I Army veteran Franklin Martin Shofner and Nettie Adell (Oates) Shofner in Dreka, the third of nine children. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1951 and married Ella Jeanell Smith in 1953. After the birth of their children, Wanda and Juanice, they relocated to Houston. He was a Scottish Rite Mason. Morris spent six years working for Houston Lighting Power and then joined the Houston Police Department in 1961 Class 24, retiring in 1989. He and Jeanell spent their golden years gardening and playing with their four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Jeanell, his wife of 54 years; his parents, Frank and Adell; siblings: Hazel Shofner, Billy Sam Shofner, Peggy (Shofner) Jordy, Martin Quincy Shofner.

Morgan Leon Baker, 32, of Timpson, Texas, passed away on May 30, 2021, in Carthage, Texas. He was born on September 2, 1988, in Nacogdoches, Texas, to Frankie Baker and Christy (Brown) Bass.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 3, 2021, at Taylor Funeral Home, Timpson, Texas, 75975, with Bro. Eric Pledger officiating.

Visitation service will be held at 1:00 PM at Taylor Funeral Home, prior to the Funeral service.

Morgan grew up in Blair community in Timpson, where he was surrounded by a magnitude of loving friends and family. He attended Timpson ISD from kindergarten up until 12th grade where he graduated with the senior class of 2007.

He never met a stranger and welcomed everyone with a smile and a big heart. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his children, whether it be throwing the baseball, spending the day fishing, or floating the river. He found comfort around his friends and family, and always found a way to the domino table or to the washer boards. Singing with good friends was always a special time that he cherished so immensely. Visiting with friends and family at various gatherings was a major part of who he was, as time spent with others for him was time well spent.

His favorite bible scripture was Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This scripture has grown with him from his childhood while he attended various churches with family and friends.

Oswell Samford, 94, of Center, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2021, in Center.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 30, 2021, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Smith Cemetery in Shelby County.

Oswell was born April 29, 1927, in Shelby County. He worked as a custom homebuilder and was of Church of Christ faith.

He is survived by:

Preston Steptoe, age 91, of San Augustine County, Texas, passed away Monday, May 24, 2021, at the Summit Health Care Center in San Augustine.

Mr. Steptoe was born February 17, 1930, and was a longtime area resident. He was a member of the Baptist church and spent his life working as a farmer/rancher.

Funeral services are set for 2pm Thursday, May 27, 2021 at the Wyman Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in San Augustine with Bro. Cliff Durham officiating. Interment will follow at Sowell Cemetery.

Regina Ann Oates, loving wife, mom, and NaNa passed away at age 58 on Friday, May 21, 2021

Regina was born on Monday August 13, 1962 to Dub and JoAnn Newcomb. She spent her life taking care of her family and helping anyone in need. She was the true meaning of a momma and not only raised her 3 children, Michael, Lisa and Krystal but had many more that adopted her as their momma too. Her world revolved around her 4 grand babies and she was their biggest cheerleader. One of her most favorite things to do was have sleepovers with all of them and sing and dance or just do whatever they wanted. She was always up for any adventure, she would be the first one in the car ready to go.

If you were lucky enough to be loved by her, then you always know you had someone in you corner. Regina had a passion for saving animals.

Joseph Wesley Daniels, 69, of Joaquin, passed away Monday, May 24, 2021, in Joaquin.

His wishes were to be cremated and a private inurnment will be held at a later date.

Born September 4, 1951, in Lima, Ohio, Joseph is the son of John Wesley Daniels and Mary Thelma Punches Daniels. In 1989, he married Donna Daniels, who passed away in 2015. Joseph worked as a truck driver and retired after 40 years. His hobbies included watching wrestling, meeting old wrestlers, knives, pictures of family, and just making peace with everyone.

Rachael Gabrielle Hopkins, 46, of Morrow, Georgia died in her home on March 19, 2021 at 3:19 pm. She lost her fight with renal cell carcinoma only three weeks after her diagnosis. Rachael was born on February 5, 1975 in Carthage, Texas to Roger Guyton “Guy” Hopkins and Linda Gail Thompson Hopkins.

Professionally, Rachael worked over 15 years for the State of Georgia and spent the past three years working for Brighter Tomorrows Consulting in Griffin, Georgia. Over her career, Rachael served in many professional organizations and achieved many credentials and certificates including LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), CPCS (Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor), CAADC (Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor), CCDP-D (Certified Co-occurring Disorder Professional-Diplomate), RPT (Registered Play Therapist). She had completed the coursework for Marriage and Family Therapy but had not received her documentation. She loved seeing her name in print with all her ‘letters’ after it.

Rachael was referred to by her mother as ‘most nearly perfect.’ She always strived for academic and professional excellence. She graduated from Tenaha High School in 1993 as Salutatorian while also completing classes at Panola Junior College graduating with her associate degree the following year in 1994. She graduated Stephen F. Austin State University with a double major bachelor’s degree in Biology and Psychology in 1997. Her Masters at Georgia School of Professional Psychology was completed in 2000. Rachael had completed her coursework and was ‘All but Dissertation’ on a Doctorate Degree. She was a member of the Chi Sigma Iota (Counseling Honor Society).

Preceded in death by her father Roger Guyton ‘Guy’ Hopkins and both sets of grandparents, James Granvel Hopkins and Maudine Hughes Hopkins, Elbert Ray Thompson and Eula Gail Grubbs Thompson and her Uncle Ray ‘Bubba’ Thompson Jr.

Rachael loved people, travel, genealogy, celebrating and spending time with friends and family. She had a million-dollar smile and gave the warmest hugs! She was a shooting star and left an indelible mark on everyone she knew. Rachael described herself as having a great sense of caring and compassion. All her knowledge and skill she had so diligently worked on throughout the years were dedicated to helping others find their best selves so they could, in turn, help others. She believed in paying it forward and making the world a better place.

Her family will bring her ashes to be buried in Oaklawn Cemetery in Center, Texas with her father and grandparents on June 12, 2021 at 10:30 am.
