September 13, 2020 - Shelby County Youth Soccer is the fastest growing sport that the City Recreation Department oversees. The City of Center and SCYS are converting the Old Community Park into a soccer complex to serve youth and their families in Shelby County. The $10,500.00 grant award will provide funds needed to finish the Concession/Bathrooms at the Soccer Complex; the complex will provide a location for the youth soccer league teams to play as well as opportunities to host tournaments.
With this 12th grant award, the 50 Women Impact group has awarded grants totaling $120,100.00 to Shelby County non-profits. The group is open for members who want to be a part of a group committed to providing support to the non-profit organizations making a positive difference in in Shelby County!
To date, the following organizations have received a 50 Women Impact grant: Shelby County Welfare Board; Texas A & M Agri-Life/Shelby FCS Committee/4-H; Fannie Brown Booth Library; Boo’s Battle Support Fund; Shelby County Outreach Ministries; Jon, Macy & Misty Bush Foundation; Hope Medical Special Fund; Timpson Food for Thought & Thrift Store; Christian Community Services; Timpson Volunteer Ambulance Service; Center Recreation/Shelby County Youth Soccer.

September 10, 2020 - B&D BBQ Joint celebrated with a ribbon cutting event Thursday, September 10, 2020 and many from the community were in attendance.
Stephanie Elswick, Chamber Ambassador, introduced owners Diana and Billy Jack Pearce.
"Welcome everybody, this is a milestone in our lives," said Diana Pearce.
She explained her husband, Billy Jack, has worked away from home for the past 18 years and they now have the opportunity to open the restaurant, which also gives him the ability to be home.
"We're very grateful for our customers, we're very grateful for our staff," said Pearce.

Pearce introduced several of their staff members and family present for the ribbon cutting.
"We just want to say thank you, thank you to our community, thank you to Shelby County and thank you to the good Lord above for blessing us and seeing us through," said Pearce.
The event was graced with the presence of Harry Murdock, who first established Harry's Smokehouse at the same location years ago.
B&D BBQ Joint's hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 11am until 7pm. The business is located at 500 Cora Street in Center and their phone number is 936-591-8827.







September 10, 2020 - The Shelby County Children’s Advocacy Center received a grant in the amount of $20,000 from T.L.L. Temple Foundation for general operating expenses over the next year. T.L.L. Temple Foundation recognizes that the pandemic has impacted many businesses. This is especially true for nonprofits, which depend on grants, donations, and fundraisers to cover the cost of operations. This grant is a tremendous benefit to the SCCAC as we work to meet the needs of child victims of abuse and neglect in our community.
The T.L.L. Temple Foundation works alongside families and communities to build a thriving Deep East Texas and to alleviate poverty, creating access and opportunities for all. In support of its mission, the foundation makes grants in the areas of education, economic development and community revitalization, health, human services, arts and culture, and conservation and the environment.
September 10, 2020 - Center Garden Club met for its first monthly meeting of the new year on September 9, 2020 in the home of Lisa Albers. President Carole Ann Chance presided. Horticultural reports on both summer tomato production and river birch trees were presented and discussed. Members also enjoyed a covered-dish salad luncheon and social hour after which they exchanged “pass-along plants.” Pictured is a flowering water lily grown by Carole Chance and passed along to Carolyn Bounds.

If you cannot have your flag lowered at sunup please lower it the evening before. If your flag cannot be lowered you can still show respect for the day by attaching a black ribbon or cord at the top.
East Texas Food Bank “Feeding the Hungry” forms partnership between Tri-County Community Action’s “Harvest for Home Food Pantry” and Tyson Foods, Inc. in providing an additional Produce Drop in the Center, Texas area.
September 9, 2020 - The East Texas Food Bank has made it possible for Tri-County Community Action Agency, Inc. (TCCA, Inc.) and Tyson Foods to come together in a partnership with providing additional produce to individuals and families within our community. This has been made possible by being able to provide 2 produce drops each 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month beginning Wednesday, September 9, 2020 until further notice.
Tri-County will continue to also have our regular produce drop on the 4th Wednesday of each month (September 23). The process and procedures will remain the same as far as disbursement of food and sign-in. Anyone is able to receive produce and food items. We will be located in the parking lot of the Wolf Plaza on the furthest end opposite of Ivan Smith Furniture (Where Sombrero’s used to be). Please meet us there on September 9, 2020. The truck arrives around 9:00-9:30 a.m.
September 7, 2020 (Entry Form) - The 44th Annual East Poultry Festival Open Photography Show will be held at the Windham Civic Center located at 146 Express Blvd, October 1, 2 and 3, from 10am to 5pm. The show is sponsored by Light and Champion.
According to Photography Competition coordinator, Billie Jones, photography entries will be accepted at First United Methodist Church (basement), 211 Porter Street, Saturday, September 19th from 9am to 12 noon. Entries may also be dropped off at the Chamber of Commerce office before 3:00 on Friday, September 18th. For late entries, please contact Billie Jones at 936-591-2426 or 936-598-7778.

Photography Show Categories include Fine Art, Scenic, Urban, People, Animals, Digital Manipulation/Photo Restoration, Flowers, and Themed (specifically/primarily poultry). The age groups are Children 12 and under; Youth 13-18; and Adults 19 and over. The rule packets give additional information regarding the categories and classes.
Entry fees are $3.00 per entry. There will be a panel of judges choosing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention in each category, and Best of Show for adults, youth and children and People’s Choice Award.
Entries may be picked-up on the final day of the Poultry Festival, Saturday, October 3, between 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the exhibit location.

September 3, 2020 - The Shelby County Children’s Advocacy Center received a grant in the amount of $10,000 from the John Harris Community Fund at East Texas Communities Foundation (ETCF).
These funds will be used to retain contract mental health therapists who will provide counseling at no charge to the children and families who qualify for our services.
We are grateful to ETCF for their support of our agency and their investment in the wellbeing of children in our community.
