March 6, 2018 - March is officially Texas History Month. On Friday, March 2, Texas Independence Day, members of the William Carroll Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) gathered on the historic courthouse square in Center to read the Texas Declaration of Independence.
Chapter President Judy Lee welcomed those attending, Chaplain Fay Eddins gave the invocation and Sandy Risinger led the pledges to the United States flag and to the Texas flag. Gail Sholar, Sue Gardner, Vickie Martin and Barbara McClellan read the document that on March 2, 1836 fifty nine delegates of the land to become the Republic of Texas approved and signed at Washington-on-the Brazos.
Members of the public joined members of the DRT Chapter, the Gateway to Texas Sons of the Republic of Texas Chapter, the JJE Gibson Children of the Republic of Texas Chapter and members of other DRT chapters as we honored our Texas history.
Merle Howard introduced a special guest, Brian Smale of Mineola, who is a direct descendant of William Carroll Crawford, our chapter namesake. At his death in 1895 Crawford was the last surviving signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Fly your Texas flag proudly and celebrate Texas.

March 6, 2018 - Firefighters from five different area fire departments came together Saturday morning, March 3rd to participate in training on vehicle extrication. Extrication, or the act of removing an injured patient from a wrecked automobile, is one of the most critical services that rural volunteer fire departments perform.Having a hydraulic rescue tool (aka "The Jaws of Life") is a vital asset to a community. Equally valuable is having personnel who are properly trained in using that equipment. 27 firefighters, including members from Joaquin VFD, Tenaha VFD, Woods VFD (Panola County), Melrose VFD (San Augustine County), and Desoto Parish Fire District #1 in Logansport were able to get hands on training on three different sets of tools. The training was made possible in part by the city of Joaquin, who allowed the fire department to use a piece of city-owned property on Faulkville Road for the training. Also a big thank you goes to Joey Ross Towing of Tenaha, who donated eight vehicles to train on. The video below by Rusty Wilson gives a bird's eye view of the training.

March 5, 2018 - March This week Center Garden Club recognizes an early harbinger of spring, the spectacular pastel pink-white tulip tree (a member of the Magnolia family) which has been in full bloom since mid-February on the front lawn of 210 Field Street, the lovely home of Shirley and Jimmy Andrews. According to Mr. Andrews, the tree is more than 29 years old as it was in place when they purchased the house in 1989. Those who saw this tree in its prime, laden with delicate blossoms, certainly experienced a wonder of nature!
March 5, 2018 - The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors are excited to announce Deborah Chadwick is the new President for the Chamber.
Mrs. Chadwick, who has served as interim director for the chamber since the Spring of 2017, was approved for the position during the Board of Directors' February meeting. Chadwick has been instrumental in helping the Chamber to continue forward representing the interests of its members and the community.
The Board of Directors anticipate the chamber will have a successful future with Chadwick leading the way and, "We salute Deborah for her dedication and willingness to serve in an interim capacity before being unanimously voted to be the new President. Congratulations!"
March 5, 2018 - On February 14, Center Garden Club (CGC)enjoyed an interesting and most informative demonstration and discussion of the principles underlying various types of creative designs, including under-water and abstract designs. The program was presented by Betty Eddleman, Nell Anderson, and Pam Sykes who are both club members and National Garden Club-certified flower show judges.

February 28, 2018 - An observance in honor of those who served in Operation Desert Storm was held Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at the Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the Historic Courthouse. Post member Shane Fenley placed the Memorial Wreath in honor of the day.
Hume spoke to honor Desert Storm Veterans explaining the Gulf War, code name Operation Desert Storm, began on January 16, 1991. Coalition forces from 34 nations lead by the United States began aerial bombardment of Iraq. This was in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait. A week later on January 24th, a ground assault began in the liberation of Kuwait and advancement in to Iraqi territory. And when the war ended February 28, 1991, 148 Americans had died in battle and there was another 145 non-battle deaths and 467 wounded in action.
February 27, 2018 - We would would like to express our sincere gratitude to our family, friends and neighbors for all of the love and support we have been shown during the devastation and total loss of our home and vehicles. The generosity of our community is overwhelming and humbling and has helped us tremendously.
We could never say thank you enough. We are so blessed to call Shelby County our home with such amazing people that come together in times of need. We have seen it time after time but it never ceases to amaze us.
Thank you for letting God’s light shine through you in times of trouble. I assure you, it does not go unnoticed.
