June 5, 2015 - D-Day was the focus of a VFW Post 8904 ceremony held on Friday, June 5, 2015 with Larry Hume, Post Quartermaster, leading the program.
"We're here today to commemorate the 71st anniversary of one of the most important dates in our country, commonly known as D-Day, the codename was Operation Neptune. D-Day was the turning point in World War II on June 6 [1944], which is tomorrow, saw the start of the largest air and sea operation in military history."
Hume continued by describing the amount of military involved in the operation. On D-Day the allies landed around 156,000 troops of which 73,000 were Americans. The amount of equipment used was staggering and the airborne landings on both flanks of the Normandy Beach 2,395 aircraft, 867 gliders of the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces were used on D-Day. It also involved huge naval forces including over 6,900 vessels, 1,213 navy combat ships, 4,126 landing ships and landing craft and 736 ancillary craft and 864 merchant vessels.
195,700 personnel were assigned to Operation Neptune, 52,889 from the United States, 112, 824 were British and over 4,900 from other allied countries. By the end of June 11 over 3,000 troops, over 54,000 vehicles and over 140,000 tons of supplies had been landed on the beaches and while there's no official casualty for D-Day the total allies casualties on D-Day are estimated at 10,000 and the United States lost approximately 6,603 men.
"Today we take time to reflect on what took place on the beaches of Normandy and appreciate the sacrifice made by so many to ensure the continuation of our free market economy and our federal republic," said Hume. "Their sacrifice helped us keep the freedoms we enjoy, and the irony is that among those freedoms they sacrificed for was the freedom to choose to ignore this day if you so wish and many do as you can see today."
Hume thanked all who were present and those that regularly attend VFW ceremonies. In honor of those who sacrificed on June 6, 1944 and the days following a memorial wreath was placed on the Shelby County Veterans Memorial by Newton Johnson, Senior Vice. Taps was then presented by Mike Langford, Post Commander.
June 5, 2015 - Ten Center Garden Club members attended the 58th District III Texas Garden Clubs Southern Zone Workshop on June 4 in Livingston.
Polk County Garden Club hosted a "Beach Retreat" where 10 East Texas Garden Clubs participated in workshops on duties for the president and treasurer, programs for clubs, and youth awards.
Members enjoyed a delicious luncheon, and had time for shopping to support the district "Ways and Means." Texas Garden Clubs State President Carol Moore gave updates from the state and announced the next Board of Directors meeting.
District III Director Nita Beale reported on District III news, and all members received door prizes.

June 5, 2015 - T.J. Horton of Garrison, Texas was the lucky raffle winner of the Ruger AR-15. The raffle took place in Center's Dependable Arms by Kirk Sanford. There were 500 tickets sold with proceeds going towards helping the Wildwings 8U baseball team in their World Series appearance in Destin, Florida, July 1-5. The team would like to thank everyone who have supported this team through sponsorship or fundraising.
June 3, 2015 - Celebrating Ouachita Baptist University’s 128th spring commencement, university officials conferred a total of 350 degrees on 343 graduates, including the university’s first three Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees.
Ouachita President Rex Horne also presented Dr. J.D. “Sonny” Tucker, executive director of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention, with an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree on behalf of the university’s Board of Trustees.
Describing Ouachita’s graduating class of 2015 as “smart, bright, energetic, enthusiastic, questioning, discerning and incredibly committed,” Tucker thanked the graduates for “the impact you have already had and the lifelong Kingdom impact you will have.”
Affirming the graduates’ legacy as difference makers, President Horne urged each of the graduates to “bear fruit and good works and do God’s work throughout your life.”
This year’s graduating class featured 143 honor graduates, including 21 who graduated summa cum laude with a grade point average of 3.95 or higher, 46 who graduated magna cum laude (3.75 GPA) and 76 who graduated cum laude (3.5 GPA).

June 3, 2015 - Carolyn Hooker and Fannie Watson, members of the Delta Gamma chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, presented Tenaha teacher Dominique Roland with a $500.00 grant-in-aid scholarship to assist her in obtaining her Masters Degree from Sam Houston State University.

May 27, 2015 - Two Shelbyville S.W. Carter Elementary students were selected to received the honored S.W. Carter Award during the awards program held Friday, May 22, 2015 and they were sisters Neera and Neena Smith. Both 
have shown to be outstanding students always volunteering their time and doing their best. The awards were presented by Mrs. Dorothy Carter and Serica Wilkins, wife and daughter of the late S.W. Carter.
The award is presented each year to the student who followed life most like Mr. Carter. The plaque read as follows:
Mr. Carter was an educator & outstanding role model to all faculty & students that he came in contact with. This award is given in his example of integrity, equality, & compassion for his fellow man to someone who has excelled in academics, & who strives to be a better person & thinks of others before oneself.
Mr. S.W. Carter was a long time educator and the name sake of S.W.Carter Elementary. He passed away in April of 2012 and the first award was presented the same year.

May 29, 2015 - Center Garden Club announces Gold Club Rating and installs new officers at their May 13, 2015 meeting held at the Community House on San Augustine Street.
Former Center Garden Club President and Past Southern Zone Director, TX Garden Clubs, Linda Bordelon installed the 2015-2017 Center Garden Club Officers and presented each officer a yellow rose, the club flower. The various parts of the rose were used to symbolize the duties and responsibilities of each office. Bordelon shared the success of the club, "Center Garden Club is the number one Garden Club in District III and one of the top Garden Clubs in the great State of Texas and will continue to be with the help of all you members. I extend to all of you wishes for a successful and enjoyably term of office and sincere appreciation for your gracious acceptance of your duties."
The 2015-2017 officers of the Center Garden Club are President, Robbie Kerr; 1st Vice-President, Judy Matthews; 2nd Vice-President, Cherry Jones; Recording Secretary, Colleen Hetherington; Corresponding Secretary, Allison Scull; and Treasurer, Jackie Hancock.
Colleen Doggett outgoing president of the club was recognized for her service to the club for the past two years. Club member Rachel Campbell spoke, "I just want to tell Colleen thank you for her contribution to the Center Garden Club for these last two years." Robbie Kerr incoming president said, "As incoming [President] I appreciate everything she has done the past to years for us and now you can breathe a sigh of relief." Doggett was presented with several gifts and a lifetime membership award for District III, TX Garden Clubs.
"The thing I was proudest of was getting the 1st place on my President's Report this year. I've enjoyed it. It's been a lot of work," expressed Doggett to the club.

May 29, 2015 - The Piney Woods Photographic Society is meant for camera enthusiasts of all skills and interests. Our goal is to help you become a better photographer and give you a place to meet others who share your passion for photography. We try to create programs and activities with information and instruction for all skill levels in an environment of support and cooperation.
The next meeting will be June 13, 2015, First United Methodist Church, Center, TX., 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The workshop will feature "Compositing (combining and blending) and the June Critique will be "Architecture".
