The Broiler Sale ended Poultry Festival activities Saturday night with a golden egg when it raised over $110,000 for its exhibitors who were comprised of students from all over Shelby County.
Nearly 100 pens with three birds each were in the Broiler Sift Saturday morning with Texas A&M University Poultry Science judge Alisa Zulkowski examining the almost 300 birds selected by exhibitors to compete for one of the only 50 Broiler Show Sale spots available. Zulkowski spoke to the audience describing characteristics of the birds desired by judges one of which is uniformity of the birds among the pen. Uniformity is representative of the care the birds are given by the exhibitors during the almost seven week project.
Aaron Gilchrist, Shelbyville 4-H, was the Grand Champion exhibitor in the 2015 Shelby County Poultry Festival Broiler Show sale Saturday night, October 3rd. Gilchrist's Grand Champion pen sold to Farmers State Bank for $8,000. He was also the highest ranking senior in the show earning him the Shelby Savings Bank Scholarship.
The Reserve Grand honor went to Lance Holloway, Center 4-H, whose chickens sold for $4,000 to McAdams Propane.

October 2, 2015 - This year’s photography show was a huge success! All of the entries were exceptional and the judges certainly had a tough group of photos to work with. Thanks to all the competitors and volunteers for their interest and hard work.
A very special thanks to Dr. Charles R. Collard and his staff, for their support and help in converting the optical clinic to a photo gallery and the members of the Piney Woods Photographic Society for helping to host the exhibit and greet all those who attended.

October 2, 2015 - A Shelby County woman fighting for her life seeks help as she awaits heart transplant.
Danquein Horton is a 32-year-old single mom of a beautiful 10-year-old named Mija. Her friends call her Dee. Dee was diagnosed as a child with Hodgkins Lymphoma twice. She survived the cancer, but the radiation treatments damaged her heart. Over time she has had countless medical treatments and has done everything she can to heal... Her heart is failing. She is now at the top of the list for a heart transplant. She has already undergone surgery for an LVAD, or Left Ventricular Assisted Device that is actually pumping her heart until she can receive a new heart. She will have to stay away from home for at least 3 months in hotels near the heart hospital in Houston. Her daughter Mija also has expensive medication she takes as she has a condition called Actinic Prurigo. This is basically an allergy to the sun. Her body reacts differently to milk, cheese, all dairy products, and heat when she goes out in the sun for more than 30 minutes at a time.
It causes her face, lips, and throat to swell and her skin burns and peels. She is taking medicine to control it and has to have specialized creams that are mixed for her at Texas Children's Hospital.
Dee has never tried to abuse the system, she has always been a hard worker as a surgical scrub technician and is well respected in the medical community. She has been unable to work for the past year and with medical bills and living expenses growing by the day, she needs help. She is not one to ask for it, but is one who deserves it. This community has always been a great one, reaching out to those who need it the most. There are countless examples of genuine support, and it is always appreciated! If you or someone you know is able to help Dee and her daughter Mija out, there are several ways set to do so.
A Go Fund Me account has been set up for her and she is able to draw funds as needed and donated at gofundme.com/haveaheartfordee
If you have anything you would like to clean out of your attics or homes and would like to donate items, there will be a benefit garage sale on Saturday, October 10th at Love, Inc. in Nacogdoches. The address is 917 Ruby St. in Nacogdoches across from Bonita Park.
A portion of her proceeds will go to Love Inc. to give back to the community. Love, Inc. will also be conducting a warehouse sale the same day! So please check it out!
There is also a Raffle going on right now of which the winner will be announced on October 10th after the sale is over! Tickets are $1 for 1 ticket, $2 for 3 tickets, and $5 for 8 tickets. Tickets are available at The Surgery Center of Nacogdoches (on the corner across from Walmart), and also at the Quick Stop in Timpson.
If you like to run, walk, jog, or stroll, then you will like to participate in a 5K FUN RUN! Details are in the works, but tee shirts and medals will be involved!
For any information on these and upcoming events, please contact Suzanne Graupman at 936-371-0566 for more details.
Dee also has a blood type that is difficult to receive a heart.. O positive. She also admits it's hard to pray for a heart because she knows how she will get it.... But she also prays for the family that will be involved.... Organ transplant is traumatic for both families....
Dee is deserving of a full and beautiful life... and would greatly appreciate any amount of money or items donated. She is grateful for every day, mainly so she can praise her Lord Jesus, and to give her daughter a hug and watch her grow up. Please consider giving to support Dee and her family, they would be eternally grateful! Thank you!!

October 1, 2015 - The East Texas Poultry Festival (ETPF) officially opened with the cutting of the feathers by the queen's court and reading of a proclamation by Sid Miller, the 12th Texas Commissioner of Agriculture, at 10am Thursday morning, October 1, 2015 under the Frances Oates Big Tent.
The Center band played the National Anthem followed by the Timpson Elementary students leading everyone in the pledge of allegiance. Jim Sawyer, Poultry Festival chair member, welcomed everyone and introduced City of Center Mayor David Chadwick. Mayor Chadwick addressed the audience welcoming all to the East Texas Poultry Festival and encouraged everyone to enjoy the good weather and festivities. Mayor Chadwick was also excited to introduce Sid Miller who began in term in office in January. Miller started speaking concerning the agriculture industry which is a 15 million dollar industry, "One in 7 jobs in this state is directly or indirectly related to agriculture. It is a big part of this area, timber, poultry, truck farming, cattle, we lead the nation in many categories."
He then read a resolution he had drafted for the city and the county, "From the Texas Department of Agriculture, official proclamation - Whereas, the Texas Department of Agriculture recognizes the importance of Texas Poultry in sustaining Texas status as an agriculture power house. Whereas, Shelby County and the Texas poultry industry have long and sordid history of supporting each other through vital partnerships that benefit the agriculture industry, local community, and state as a whole. Whereas, the poultry industry supports more than 1,500 jobs in Shelby County and where Shelby County holds the annual East Texas Poultry Festival each October to celebrate the positive impact agriculture has on the region. Whereas, festival such as this play a special role enhancing the lives of rural Texans. Whereas, rural communities are the backbone of Texas' unique culture and heritage. And Whereas, Texas Agriculture matters and Texas allows it with every citizen on the planet every day. Whereas, the Texas Department of Agriculture expresses its appreciation to the East Texas Poultry Industry and its community leaders throughout the region. Now and therefore, let it be resolved, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller proclaims his support for the [39th] Annual East Texas Poultry Festival in Shelby County, Texas." Finally to end opening ceremonies, the Poultry Festival Queen, Kamaryn Smith, of Shelbyville, and her court performed the official cutting of the feather boa. After the feather cutting, Center F.L. Moffett students and Center Elementary Students took the stage.
