“You Are My Son” by Doug Fincher

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God...” 1 John 3:2

April 17, 2023 - My son Mark and I were talking about Hurricane Laura last night and somehow got to talking about a VW Beetle we had when he was about 14 years old. It was a ’52 Model, had a 29HP motor, and could hardly pull the hat off your head. Mark was just learning to drive, and we let him drive the VW 100 yards to the sanctuary and back.

One day Mark drove back to the parsonage crying. “Daddy...I’m sorry.” He then stuttered, “I ran into that pole at the nursey and bent the fender of the car,” he cried. As we talked about what happened that day in 1973, I was happy that he remembered it so well. “I remember all of it,” he said. “You put your arms around me and said, “Son, don’t cry.” “Do you know how little that car means to me?” Then you hugged me and said, “Remember, Mark...you are my son.”

I’m 87 years old now and Mark is 62. I told Mark that during my life, I stood before my Heavenly Father many times...unsure and afraid. And every time, He put His arms around me and said, “Do you realize how little worldly things mean to me? You are what I care about.”

“Remember...you are my son.”
