A Brief History of the Son of Confederate Veterans

July 24, 2015 - The Sons of Confederate Veterans is a national organization with over thirty thousand members in all fifty states and some foriegn countries.

The SCV is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans and was organized at Richmond, Virginia on July 1, 1896. We are an historical, patriotic and non-political organization dedicated to insuring that a true history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved.

This is done through historical programs at our monthly meetings, obtaining and preserving grave markers for Confederate veterans, living history and educational programs at numerous events and the guardianship of Confederate monuments and cemeteries.

Within the national organization, each state is known as a "division" which is then divided into "brigades" and local "camps" form a brigade. Each local camp is named for a local Confederate military unit or a local Confederate hero.

Our camp in Center is named after Capt. Jesse Amason who served in the 11th Regiment of the Texas Infantry. Capt. Amason returned to Shelby County after the war and became instrumental in the founding of the town of Center, donating the land where Center now stands.

Membership in the SCV is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces. The minimum age for full membership is twelve, but there is no minimum age to join as a Cadet.
Our camp meets the last Monday of each month at Las Margaritas Restaurant at 6:30PM. If you are interested in joining our organization, we welcome you to attend our next meeting on Monday, July 27th.
