Commissioners Lift County-Wide Burn Ban

October 26, 2015 - The Shelby County Commissioners lifted the burn ban in Shelby County by a motion which carried due to the much needed rain recently landing in the area to the relief of many in the county.

Six roads were approved by motion which carried for closure in Precincts 3 and 4 per requests made by TxDOT. These roads will be closed for TxDOT to reconstruct bridges. Judge Allison Harbison was assured by Commissioners Bradley Allen and Travis Rodgers travelers would be able to find alternate routes.

Roadways included in the closure are CR 3564 at Hilliard Creek - projected cost to the state $314,440; CR 3455 at Spinney Creek - projected cost to the state $470,000, and Shoat Creek $328,900 (two locations); CR 4256 at tributary of Flat Fork Creek, CR 4916 at Flat Fork Creek - projected cost to the state $471,000, CR 4670 at McFadden Creek - projected cost to the state $445,900.

A motion was carried to approve the purchase of a Recorder from VistaCOM for the Sheriff’s Department upon the payment of $15,000.00 from DETCOG (Deep East Texas Council of Governments). According to a letter submitted by Van Bush, Regional 9-1-1 System, the DETCOG Strategic plan for 9-1-1 service delivery for the region for Fiscal Year 2016 has Shelby County scheduled to replace its voice recorder system.

DETCOG will reimburse Shelby County in the amount not to exceed $15,000.

"I suggest that we approve the purchase, let DETCOG know that we've approved the purchase, and then wait on them to pay it to buy it. So, we make sure we can get our money for the grant so we don't lose the money like we have in the past sometimes," said Judge Harbison.

A motion was made by Jimmy Lout, Commissioner Precinct 2, and seconded by Travis Rodgers, Commissioner Precinct 3, followed by a question from Rodgers confirming the county would wait until DETCOG has paid before making the payment for the recorder.
