Covid-19 Update: January 2022 Numbers Staggering with Nearly 1,000 New Cases

February 1, 2022 - According to updated cumulative data from the Texas Department of State Health Service’s Covid-19 Dashboard, the number of infections in January 2022 soared for Shelby County to 976 new cases. Of the new cases reported during the month, 557 were new confirmed cases and 419 were new probable cases.

In retrospect to 2021 Covid-19 numbers for Shelby County, the whole year had 2,019 new cases. The case counts from the single month of January 2022 nearly reached half of the total cases from all last year. Comparatively, the newest and most contagious variant has not been as deadly as previous ones either because of the differences in how the variant affects the body or because of vaccines helping to lessen the severity of health problems after infection. January has had two new deaths from the virus.
