April 17, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, April 17.
We continue today with our series “The Road to Resurrection”, as we search the scriptures to find what Christ did each day of the week that led to the Cross and to the Empty Tomb.
Thursday of Holy Week is sometimes called “Maundy Thursday”. The ancient word maundy is derived from the Latin word maundate, from which comes our modern word mandate, or commandment. How does that connect to the day before Good Friday? Well, at the Last Supper, which occurred on Thursday evening of the original Holy Week, Jesus said this - “A new commandment I give unto you, love one another. As I have loved you, love one another. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples - if you love one another”.
That verse is found in the 13th chapter of the gospel of John. Chapters 13-16 record the teaching that Christ shared with His disciples in the Upper Room on that fateful night. Within this “sermon” are found some of the most famous, the most profound scriptures in the Bible. It takes about 30 minutes to read these three chapters. I encourage you to take that time today. Read and remember. That reminds me of my favorite Lord’s Supper song. Perhaps it’s one of yours.
In remembrance of me, eat this bread. In remembrance of me, drink this wine.
In remembrance of me, pray for the time when God’s own will is done.
In remembrance of me, heal the sick. In remembrance of me, feed the poor.
In remembrance of me, open the door and let your brother in.
Take, eat, and be comforted. Drink and remember, too
That this is my body and precious blood shed for you, shed for you.
In remembrance of me, search for truth. In remembrance of me, always love.
In remembrance of me, don’t look above, but in your heart, in your heart, look in your heart for God.
Do this in remembrance of me.
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
