April 22, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, April 22.
English is a complicated language. Many English words have many different meanings. The word “set” is said to have over 400 definitions! Today we take a look at a complicated, multifaceted Bible word - “blessing”. Here’s just a few of the ways that we use it.
- A prayer before meals - “Dad, would you say the blessing?”
- To make the sign of the cross - “The baseball player blessed himself before his at-bat.”
- Response to a sneeze - “God bless you!”
- To consecrate - “The pastor prayed a blessing over the newborn baby.”
- As a lead-in to gossip - “Bless her heart, she needs to go on a diet!”
- And as praise to God - “Bless the Lord, O my soul.”
In the sixth chapter of the Old Testament book of Numbers we find a famous blessing. Some pastors recite it to close their Sunday services, and it’s been set to music in a classic worship song. I leave you with it today.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.”
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
