January 29, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, January 29.
This week, in 1924, the very first Winter Olympic Games were held in France. Next weekend, it all unfolds again in Italy, and on your TV. I probably won’t be watching much. I love sports, and watch a lot of it, but I’ve never really been connected to the Winter Olympics. I think that’s because I’m not really connected to the athletes.
I grew up in Houston, where snow and ice in January is as rare as, well, snow and ice in July! I’ve only skied once in my life and I almost broke my neck. I’ve skated a few times and, trust me, it wasn’t pretty. But I have run races and jumped and turned cartwheels and gone swimming. When I watch the Summer Olympics - which I never miss - I feel connected to those athletes who are running and jumping and swimming and tumbling. For a moment, I am them, and they are me.
It’s the same way with books or movies or songs. When we connect with the characters, it touches our hearts and lifts our spirits. It’s the same way with Bible characters. Name a Bible person and I’ll wager you can see something of yourself in them. When we fear we’re not worthy of or prepared for a big task - that’s Moses. When we just avoid doing something, when we run from it - that’s Jonah. When we speak or act before we think - that’s Peter. When we experience a broken relationship - that’s Paul and Barnabas.
We are connected to these people of the Word. Their lives, their journeys, resonate in our hearts. They are us. We are them.
Meet you back here tomorrow,
