David’s Daily Devotion for Jan. 8

January 8, 2025 - Good Morning!  It’s Wednesday, January 8.

I love palindromes.  You know what those are - the words and phrases that read the same backwards and forwards.  Names like Otto and phrases like, “A man, a plan, a canal, Panama”.  And the famous one attributed to Napoleon, “Able was I ere I saw Elba”.

There are some Bible palindromes, too, like the name Anna.  And Abba, a Bible word for God the father - a familiar, personal term like “daddy” (or dad - another palindrome).  Eve is one, too, of course, and so are the first words of the first man - “Madam, I’m Adam” (NOT in Genesis).

In 79 AD, the city of Pompeii was buried under volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius.  In the ruins was found a very unusual Latin inscription, a very unusual palindrome.  It has come to be known as the Sator Square.

SATOR
AREPO
TENET
OPERA
ROTAS

As you can see, this palindrome not only can be read backwards and forwards, but also up and down.  There are several interpretations of its meaning and one is a Christian message.  Some historians believe that early believers used palindromes as secret codes, much like they used the Jesus Fish.  Others theorize that these spiritual palindromes were tools for meditation.  In any case, I leave you with one possible translation of the Sator Square.

Jesus sowed the seeds of His teaching, the teachings that were fulfilled by the cross, and through Him we can be free.

Good news . . . however you read it.

Meet you back here tomorrow,

David
