David’s Daily Devotion for June 10

June 10, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, June 10.

Happy Birthday, Judy Garland! She was born on this day in 1922. The singer, actress, and Hollywood icon passed away in 1969, at the young age of 47, and is forever connected with the classic song “Over the Rainbow” from the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz.” A couple of Sundays ago I heard a sermon that featured a clever metaphor from that movie.

The sermon was about the Crucifixion of Christ and included the four things that happened at the moment of His death - the darkness, the earthquake, the dead coming back to life, and the ripping open of the Temple curtain. That huge and heavy curtain covered the Holy of Holies, the place that the Jews considered to be the actual presence of God.

The preacher, in his sermon, referenced the curtain that hid “The Great Oz.” Dorothy and her three friends had traveled down the “yellow brick road”, each with a single desire. The Scarecrow needed a brain. The TinMan was searching for a heart. The Lion hoped for courage. And Dorothy just wanted to get back home to Kansas. But when her little dog, Toto, pulled back the curtain, they saw that Oz was only a little old man.

When the Temple curtain was ripped open from top to bottom, it symbolized that we could come into God’s presence and have a personal relationship with Him. Jesus, through His sacrifice on the Cross, would give us everything we needed - a new mind, a new heart, the courage to live a victorious life. And a home, not in Kansas, but in heaven.

Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
