We continue today, in this week leading to Palm Sunday, with a series on the theme of praise. As Jesus entered Jerusalem that morning, the crowd was shouting a special word, the word "hosanna". Join me in a brief word study.
Hosanna is the Greek translation of a Hebrew word that appears in the Old Testament. In that context, it literally means "save us!" So, were the people who welcomed Christ into the city expressing their praise or asking for help? Perhaps it was a combination of the two. Whatever the exact meaning of that word, the Palm Sunday people knew that they needed a messiah, a deliverer, a savior.
Psalm 118:25-26a - Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Mark 11:9-10 - Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!
