David’s Daily Devotion for May 9

May 9, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, May 9.

On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation declaring that the second Sunday in May would be a very special national holiday - Mother’s Day. 111 years later, Mother’s Day is still going strong. It’s in third place (behind Christmas and Valentine’s) for greeting card sales, and trails only Valentine’s Day in the sale of flowers. It has first place all to itself in the category of “eating out”, and with the exception of Easter Sunday, is the highest church attendance day of the year. It is a day to celebrate, a day to honor, a day to remember.

Faye Estelle Wortham Mathis was born in East Texas in 1926. She became a pastor’s wife at the tender age of 17, and served her church - over eight decades - as organist, choir member, soprano soloist, Bible teacher, bus ministry director, mentor, prayer warrior, and encourager. She served her community as a tutor for area schools, and as an aide at local nursing homes and hospitals. She gave her husband, Rev. Travis Lamar Mathis, four children, of whom I am the youngest. She passed away on August 5, 2010.

And so, this Sunday, like many other people - perhaps like you - I will be remembering a mother that has gone on to glory, a mother already in heaven, a mother that waits there for me.

May you have a happy and blessed Mother’s Day.

Meet you back here on Monday,

David
