David’s Daily Devotion for Nov. 18

November 18, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, November 18.

Thanksgiving is nine days away, and we continue our series on thankfulness, preparing our minds and hearts for this important holiday. Over the next two weeks we’ll look at stories behind some thankful songs, stories behind some thankful Bible characters, and wisdom on this foundational subject from Christ himself. But this morning, the unlikely trio of Albert Einstein, Paul McCartney, and the Apostle Paul, teach us about the connection between thankfulness and humility.

When you think about genius, the name Einstein usually comes to mind. The legendary physicist is thought to have had an IQ of over 200. Mine is about half that. So I guess I’m half as smart as Einstein. Sounds about right. Here’s an Einstein quote - “Standing before God, we are all equally wise and all equally foolish”.

If you’re a popular music fan, you’ll probably agree with me that Paul McCartney is a genius. The ability to write great song after great song, year after year - that’s a once in a lifetime gift. Genius. But sometimes genius is applied within a very narrow framework. If you placed the music for a simple thanksgiving hymn in front of Paul, he wouldn’t be able to play it. He can’t read music! None of the Beatles could. Humility.

We complete our study of thankfulness and humility by looking at another “Paul” - the great Apostle. I believe that he possessed a genius intellect, as well. After all, he wrote half the New Testament! But how did Paul see himself? We get a clue when we read Ephesians 3:8 - “Unto me, who is less than the least of the saints, is His grace given”. And I Timothy 1:15 - “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief”.

It’s impossible to truly have a heart of thankfulness if you don’t have a heart of humility. “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, so that no one can boast”. Ephesians 2:8-9

So, all you geniuses out there - smarten up! And be thankful.

Meet you back here tomorrow,

David
