November 26, 2024 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, November 26.
On this day in 1948, the pace of modern life got just a little bit quicker, as the Polaroid company introduced the first instant camera. I have one of those “Land” cameras in my collection. I once thought they were called that to differentiate them from “sea” cameras, but they were actually named after their inventor, Edwin Land. Suddenly, snapshots didn’t require a dark room or a professional film developer, they could appear right before your eyes - like magic.
Within our lifetimes we’ve seen lots of magical miracles - television, microwave ovens, personal computers, space travel. The Polaroid Company went bankrupt 20 years ago because we all now have instant cameras at our fingertips. And we have the wisdom of a thousand libraries in the palm of our hand. Magic!
But all this enhanced convenience, this heightened speed, this instant access to information and entertainment - has it made our lives better? Are we happier, more content, more fulfilled than our 1948 ancestors? I’m thinking that most people in 2024 would probably answer that question in the negative. We are surrounded by “time saving” devices, but seem to have less time than ever. We can communicate on a scale never before seen in human history, but are plagued by feelings of detachment, alienation, and loneliness. We have instant access to an ocean of information, but are constantly searching for truth.
I leave you with a small truth, a bit of wisdom, a snapshot, if you will, of God’s recipe for a good life. “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
