David’s Daily Devotion For Oct.2

October 2, 2025 - Good Morning!  It’s Thursday, October 2.

Jane Goodall died yesterday.  She was 91.  Do you know the name?  The zoologist, anthropologist, animal behaviorist, writer, filmmaker, was considered the world’s greatest expert on chimpanzees, the animals considered to be the closest relatives to humans.

In the 1960’s she became a frequent subject of National Geographic TV specials.  I watched them all and was inspired to become a zoologist when I grew up.  I did work at a zoo for a year when I was nineteen, but then God had a different idea, and called me into ministry.

Goodall discovered that chimps use tools, a rare phenomenon in the animal kingdom.  And although there were examples of violence in their world, there was also evidence of strong families and the patient nurturing of the young.  Not that different from us.

On hearing of her passing I thought of an ancient Christian hymn.  Here are the first and last verses.

All things bright and beautiful
All creatures great and small
All things wise and wonderful
The Lord God made them all

He gave us eyes to see them
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty
Who has made all things well

Meet you back here tomorrow,

David
