David’s Daily Devotion for Sept. 7

September 7, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, September 7.

On September 7, 1860, a baby girl was born. Her name was Anna Mary Robertson. Doesn't ring a bell? Maybe you know her nickname - Grandma Moses. She is considered, by many, to be one of America's greatest folk art painters. But the real story is about when she earned that honor. Grandma Moses didn't start painting until she was 78 years old!

Anna Robertson led a hard life. She started working as a housekeeper when she was twelve. After 17 years, she married, had ten children, and helped her husband run their farm. She was a true Proverbs 31 woman. She did not "eat the bread of idleness". She was a quilter and was especially skilled at embroidery. But arthritis struck when she reached her seventies and made these hobbies difficult. And so, at the ripe young age of 78, Grandma Moses painted her first painting.

She would complete about 1500 more, selling many of them for $3. But her fame grew and in 1953, Time Magazine put her on the cover. Grandma Moses died in 1961, at the age of 101, and in 2006, one of her paintings sold for 1.2 million dollars.

Another woman named Anna is briefly mentioned in the second chapter of Luke. She was there when the Baby Jesus was brought by Mary and Joseph to the Temple. Bible scholars believe she may have been 105 years old.

"There was a prophet called Anna . . . She was of a great age . . . She never left the Temple, but worshipped there night and day . . . At that moment (when she saw the Christ Child), she began to praise God, and to speak about the child to all . . ."

Seniors can experience new things, can walk down new roads. Seniors, in God's power, can make a difference.

Meet you back here tomorrow,
