February 3, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, February 3.
We find these words of Christ in Matthew 5:13 - “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trodden underfoot”. Today, we use salt primarily to season our food. I don’t use much salt, but a lot of people do. I’ve noticed some people salting their meal, even before they taste it! But the words from Matthew 5 were spoken during a time, before refrigeration, when salt was mostly used as a preservative. Salt wasn’t just an “extra” thing, it was an “essential” thing.
Some Christians read this passage and feel a sense of pride - “We are the salt of the earth!” But Jesus meant these to be words of warning. When salt is diluted and contaminated, it loses its purpose. The phrase “trampled under foot” doesn’t refer to a secondary function - like we might have put salt, during last week’s ice storm, on our steps or sidewalks. Remember, Jesus is speaking this truth to a people who knew nothing of ice or snow. He isn’t warning that Christians may become less effective. He’s saying that we could become useless.
As God’s people, we do have the potential to change the world. But only through His power, can that potential become our purpose.
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
