The Christian songwriting duo, Bill and Gloria Gaither, have produced so many classic gospel songs - "Because He Lives", "The King is Coming", "He Touched Me", just to name a few. One of my favorites of theirs is a song appropriate for the beginning of a new year - "The Longer I Serve Him".
Bill's grandmother was a strong Christian woman and had a tremendous spiritual impact on his life. When she came to the end of her life, Bill sat at her bedside. Knowing that her journey had been far from easy, Bill asked her if her struggle had been worth it. She looked up and said, "the longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows".
Those were some of her last words, and they made a lasting impression on Bill Gaither. He considered the song that they inspired to be the inheritance that his grandmother left to him. We're left with these inspiring lyrics today.
