January 19, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Monday, January 19.
Washington D.C. is one of my top five favorite big cities. The others include San Antonio, Houston, New Orleans, and New York. The museums and memorials are my favorite parts of D.C. The last time I was there, in 2021, I made my usual visit to the Smithsonian, but my very first visit to the memorial for Martin Luther King. It’s separated from the hubbub of the National Mall by a large grove of trees, and offers a quieter experience than the Lincoln Memorial or the Washington Monument. The figure of Dr. King seems to emerge from a huge block of granite. And on the walls all around the statue... are his words.
The Atlanta pastor and civil rights leader had a way with words. He could truly turn a phrase. He was blessed with the gift of eloquence - a gift that has grown exceedingly rare in our present culture. I have come back to his quotes again and again throughout my life, and I remember them again on this day.
- Faith is about taking the first step, even when you can’t see the whole staircase.
- We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.
- The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.
- Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.
- That old law about an eye for an eye, leaves everyone blind.
- The time is always right to do what’s right.
- Returning violence for violence only multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.
- I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.
There are two National Service Days, one is on September 11, and the other is today. Take the opportunity to do something good for somebody!
Meet you back here tomorrow,
