David's Daily Devotion for January 28

January 28, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, January 28.

Here’s our question for the day - Does God SING? Let’s search the Word. The Bible leaves no doubt that we, as children of God, are created to lift our voices to Him in praise. It mentions singing over 400 times, and in 50 verses God states it as a command.

Psalm 95:1 - Come, let us sing to the Lord, let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation!

I’m glad that God put that phrase “joyful noise” in there. If he had said “make a beautiful sound”, I’m not sure how many worshippers would open their mouths on Sunday mornings! The Bible also tells us that angels sing. In Job 38 we find these poetic words.

Where were you when I laid the foundations for the world, as the morning stars sang together and the angels shouted for joy.

That verse uses a device seen often in Hebrew poetry - parallelism. Instead of using rhyme, the writer repeats himself, but uses different descriptive words each time. The morning stars and the angels are the same thing. And so, when God created the universe, the angels sang!

But, we still haven’t answered our question of the day - Does God sing? Zephaniah was one of the 12 minor prophets. Perhaps he’s the most minor of all. We know almost nothing about him, and his book, near the end of the Old Testament, has just three short chapters. Like many of the prophets, he writes of God’s judgement and wrath. But he closes his little book with thoughts of reconciliation, speaking of God’s forgiveness, of God’s love. And in Zephaniah 3:17 we read these words -

The Lord, your God, is with you and He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you. He will comfort you in His love. He will rejoice over you with singing.

Perhaps one of the greatest joys of heaven will be to stand in His presence, to give Him praise, and to hear Him... SING!

Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
