On July 28, 1866, Congress approved the use of the metric system in the United States. And ever since that day Americans have only used the metric system. Oh wait... that didn’t happen! Over the next century our government continued to urge us to make this change, but to no avail. In 1975 Congress formed the Metric System Conversion Board. It was largely ignored and disbanded in 1982. And so, after 160 years of government programs promoting the metric system, we still buy a gallon of gas, a pound of potatoes, a quart of milk, and my house is still a mile outside of town - not 1.609 kilometers.
Free will. It’s a coin with two sides. Six years ago, during the Covid pandemic, the choice was mask-no mask. Today parents ponder whether to vaccinate their kids or not. Free will is our birthright, but it can also be challenging. Free will. It’s something we not only have as Americans, but we also have as Christians. God created us to have choices. The choice to sin or not to sin. The choice to love Him or to deny that He even exists. Free will. Paul, in the 5th chapter of Galatians, wrote about the responsibility that comes along with that freedom.
“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”
