July 29, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, July 29.
This time of year my mind often travels back to a hot summer night in late July of 1969. I was twelve, and my family had driven up from Houston to spend a week at my grandfather’s East Texas lake house - a cabin just 15 minutes from where I live now. At about 9:30 that night, we were all huddled around an ancient little black and white TV, watching a young man named Neil... step out onto the surface of the moon.
If you’re old enough, I’m certain that you remember where you were that night too. There are moments in every life that remain in our memory - a wedding, a birth, a funeral, a baptism - family moments. But once in a great while there are national times of remembrance - Pearl Harbor, the Kennedy assassination, 911. These times connect us to all of our fellow Americans. These moments bind us together as a National family.
I’ve been watching a TV series lately called “For All Mankind”. The show imagines how different everything would be if the Russians had been the first to put a man on the moon. We don’t always realize just how close the “space race” really was. Did you know that during the 21 hours that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were on the lunar surface, a Soviet ship landed on the moon? It was 350 miles away and it crashed landed and it was unmanned, but the synchronization of those two events is an almost unbelievable historical moment.
The Apostle John, in his gospel, tells us of a healed man who had an unbelievably memorable moment. The moment he met Christ. His testimony, which inspired the classic hymn “Amazing Grace”, was simple but infinitely profound - “This one thing I know. I was blind but now I see!”. Each believer has a memory something like that. And these memories connect us as Christians. These memories bind us together as a family of faith.
